I've had this same discussion about Soma's name with other translators and some Japanese people multiple times ever since the oneshot came out and we always reached the same conclusion, "no translation wouldn't sound awkward or sound cooler than the original name"
I think they did the best they could with the name, though, I agree that "war" isn't exactly the best word, I think any other way of saying "battle" or "contest" would've been better, but then again I'm no publisher XD

Food Wars? this is why i hate translations/adaptation of titles
I think the opposite. Untranslated titles are a pain to remember for those who don't speak japanese

Damn, Soul Catcher(S) above both World Trigger and Gintama? Looks like the series is finally gaining some traction, that and the vomic is certainly going to help as well.

Super bummed about Koi no Cupid though, I really liked it... Hopefully it's rank raises a bit. I mean it seems Hachi's has despite it sucking.

---------- Post added at 01:41 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:34 AM ----------

Although I think we should keep in mind that Isobee doesn't seem to be normally ranked due to how quickly it dropped to the bottom after it's first few chapters. I think it's likely that Jump wants it to be a new permanent bottom dweller with Kochikame like Jaguar was. Which means the real bottom 5 is
Gintama
Bleach
Koi no Cupid
Hime Doll
Kurokuroku

The problem is that the titles got longer and dumber with time:
"Yuusha ni Narenakatta Ore wa Shibushibu Shuushoku wo Ketsui Shimashita"...
That's a damn sentence, not just a title!

Looks like World Trigger is back to cannabalizing Bleach. Hopefully the inclusion of our favorite Hitsugaya and Ichigo reignited or rekindled interest and pleasure from Bleach.

Otherwise with Soul Catcher(s) maintaining...I hope it gets a colour page this year.

You know it's going to be a good day when you start it with seeing Bleach in bottom five.

It's not a question of length. Attack on Titan and Animal country are clearer and easier to remember for me than Shingeki no kyojin and Doubutsu no something.
And the fact that i don't understand 99% o the titles in mangaupdates when searching for new titles is kinda annoying.

It's a matter of preference and custom, I prefer japanese names than translated names, except for ridiculous long names. I say Shigenki no Kyojin since always, I never called SnK as Attack on Titan.
I didn't think Shokugeki no Soma English name the best one, but I don't complain about names because I understand why they translate it, I just will continue to call it as Shokugeki no Soma.

Haha, true but it depends, Attack on Titan sounds totally stupid to me, while the japanese version could also mean advance/charge/invasion. It's not like the humans are attacking the Saturn moon Titan to retaliate against Thanos. :P

So it's a thing of preference, no problem. A short subtitle with the translated name works most often.

english titles are meant to peak the interest of english reader. i for myself can easily remember them and tend to forget japanese titles. thats why is easier to mention naruto, bleach, deathnote and op rather than any japanese named one like shokugeki. their names tend to be long and feel unfamiliar.

You would call assassination classroom by its jpn name instead?
I often side with english names, easier to search, spell, and Im afraid of sounding silly trying to say a jpn name IRL

Not that I'm complaining but what's with the sudden barrage of Gintama color pages? I remember one or two years ago the series was lucky if it got one for it's anniversery, and now it seems like it gets one at least once a month. I always figured it was cause of the series's middling popularity/Sorachi's laziness, but that doesn't seem to be the case at all anymore. Well...I can't wait to see it at any rate.

I call Assassination Classroom by its japanese name sometimes, but only when I speak it, I think it is cooler. xD
When I write it's easier the ensligh one.
Jump series have easy names most of the time, so I don't mind in say it in japanese or search it.

I kinda edge towards thinking that the untranslated name, unless specifically romanised (a la Shinmai Fukei Killco-san), is too much of a weeaboo tendency, usually from those intent on treating japanese comics like some strange, exotic foreign delicacy.

Like sure, some things don't work properly, like Shokugeki or whatnot, but with most adaptations they're the exception rather than the rule. And despite my Food Wars misgivings, stuff like that is... kinda what those doing the english adaptation are paid for. So I should probably be okay with that.

side-note with regards to stuff like Attack on Titan: when you've got a licensed, approved translation for what the title should be, you're just kinda being super stubborn in how you choose to refer to it. that's... depressing, more than anything.

Hmmmm, so it looks like Hachi got little bit of light to possibly survive. Let's see if it can become a competition with WT and SC(S).

I liked the english name to Shokugeki no Soma, it's a dificult term to translate and "food wars!" is very appealing to the readers/buyers... i guess it was a good choice, the translation could be 'contest' instead of 'wars', but i don't think it would have the same impact with the marketing.

But i have to say, i can't use the english name to almost all of the manga i've ever read. The only ones that i'm currently reading and i use the translated name are AssClass, Golden Time and Machine-Doll.
