Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Its still interesting seeing how many volumes of a series can be up there.

At least at the 500 list again, I see 24 of 38 ace of diamond volumes (last week was 13), and 15 of 30 Yowamushi Pedal volumes (was 24 last week). Wonder how long they can stay in there.

Shocked for 16. Super Lovers #6 (55,794), perhaps it needs to be next in line to get a yaoi tv anime adaptation hopefully, could easily go on to over 100K+ if they wanted I think.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

The decision isn't only of the anime industry, but from the magazine(Vagabond-> Mourning, Knights of Sidonia-> Afternoon) and publisher(both Kodansha).
Don't forget that Knights of Sidonia is newer than Vagabond(by 13 years) and the author of Vagabond is a lot more famous, so trying to boost Knights of Sidonia sales(or exposition in general) makes more sense than Vagabond.

Is possible that they're waiting for Vagabond to end to make an anime that makes justice to it.
Anime (and drama) are not infomercials for manga. Publishers don't license titles for a boost in sales. They want the licensing fee and royalties. A sales boost is wonderful, but never more than a happy accident. The publisher sees a return before the anime ever airs, without a single extra book being sold. There is no guarantee any anime, even for the best known manga will boost sales. It's not a gamble worth taking. Kodansha can charge a higher licensing fee, and higher percentage of royalties, for an established manga such as Vagabond. Kodansha might not even be trying to push Sidonia no Kishi, they could have been approached. Sidonia was not licensed by an anime studio. It was licensed by, Polygon Pictures, a 3D CG company. Polygon Pictures typically work as a third party contractor, hired to create CG fills for other studios movies, anime, commercials, and TV shows. Sidonia will be there first ever independent feature. Full CG anime typically are not very popular. Sidonia no Kishi probably is not going to be a hit anime, and it probably won't boost book sales. Businesses typically do not like to turn down money. If a studio shows interest in a series, and the money is right, it's going to get licensed.

Inoue fully owns the rights to Vagabond. He licenses the series to Kodansha for domestic distribution. That is why Vagabond, despite being a Kodansha Comic, is licensed to VIZ in the states. Kodansha does not have any say in licensing Vagabond for adaption. Studios would have to deal with Inoue directly. The real problem is that Vagabond would be the 1000th time a movie, drama, or w/e has been made about Musashi. There is probably little demand, because of the topic. It is more curious that REAL has not already been turned into a drama.

While I didn't knew that Inoue owned all rights to Vagabond(That is a really strange contract that he made with the magazine. Well, he is really famous author so he can make does kind of deals) your statement about magazine/publisher receiving royalties is not always true. It really depends in the kind of deal made in the production project of the anime.
The magazine could, or not, be part of the committee of the anime, and if being part is the case than it will not have an immediate income and it would have to expect, at least some, profit coming from improved volume sales(and magazine). I'm not sure, but I believe that normally the magazine/publisher decides to make part of the committee giving the potential advantages(from more control, more quality assurance and more profit), at least for promising titles. I would call Vagabond one of those(but than you have the case of Musashi being a very overused topic).

P.S: Could Inoue having all the rights of Vagabond be the reason of Real, a Shueisha title, being promoted(the 1.3 Million sales) in Mourning Vagabond section?

He wrote one of the most popular manga ever. He had leverage when he negotiated with Kodansha.

Sales boost are not the only consideration when deciding what to license. The odds of an anime boosting book sales is too low. Companies don't make financial decisions based on something that depends entirely on luck. The publisher is going to see there money, no matter how the deal is structured. They probably have a working list of manga that they want to promote to studio's, based around what is most promotable. I love Nihei, but Sidonia was probably not on that list. If a publisher is going to reject a studios overtures then it probably is more a matter of the proposed treatment, rather than something like how new (or old) the series is.

I'm rooting for Daiya A and Yowapeda. I don't read either manga, but am really enjoying the anime, especially Yowapeda.

Is that true? If so, it seems like you answered your own question. There's nothing in it for Kodansha to advertise a Shueisha series. It makes me wonder if he has the same arrangement with Shueisha to advertise Vagabond in Young Jump.

Well it was only a small mention so I don't know if is common for authors that work in two different publishers to promote their works in all publishers. I just thought it was strange for that to happen.

Ups, it wasn't 1.3 Million sales nor in mourning :P, but 14 Millions copies sold and in the Vagabond 36th volume. Even so is weird for Kodansha to print a good new of a title of another publisher(Has Kodansha a good relationship with Shueisha? I know that Shueisha as a real close relationship with Shogakukan). The link of the notice here!

They may just mention the series' name, like Arakawa's case, but the publisher will not going to promote the series which isn't from their publisher.

Yeah, that makes a bit more sense than it being in the magazine.

Not sure what kind of relationship they have. It wouldn't be the same as Shueisha and Shogakukan or Hakusensha, which have the same parent company.

The publishers just going mention the series' name; nothing more and nothing less.

In what? The magazine?

But if not, you didn't check the link I guess?

I mean the publisher only going to mention the author's work from different place and that's it.

I think this is a misunderstanding, lol

Do what? Do you think the publisher going to actively promote the series from the publisher since it is by one of their author?

If Inoue's contract says he can advertise Real in his Vagabond tankoubons, then yes. I see no other reason for Kodansha to do that otherwise.

Not just Inoue's work, I saw that kind of stuff in other series as well. Like Owari no Seraph promoted its novel version, but the novel is from Kodansha; and there are other examples as well.

It isn't like Inoue is getting special treatment beyond the publishers.

That isn't really the same kind of thing. The topic was about two series that are only related because Inoue is the author, each of which is published by competing companies.

Owari no Seraph - Ichinose Glen, a 16 year old's Catastrophe, seems like it's just a novelization, considering the same two people are working on it who work on the manga. It also debuted later. It's the same with Kure-nai, Yamamoto's (the artist) previous series, except the novel came first that time. So honestly, I'm not sure what sort of arrangement they have.

I'm sure there are other examples, but I don't think this kind of thing happens purely out of goodwill. I guess that was my point.

Owari no Seraph is just one example, there are other many examples as well. Like did you check the series by Arakawa Hiromu?

My point is that the publisher only going to mentioning the series' name and that's about it; Inoue isn't like the first time it happened.

If the publisher really wants promote series from different publisher, then they'll actively advertise in the actual magazine than a volume.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Whatever. I still don't get your argument.
I wasn't the one arguing in the first place...LOL

The topic of Real being advertised in the latest volume of Vagabond was brought up, despite them being from two different publishers. Bigivelfhq was asking if it was a common thing for this to happen. I can't answer that question, but someone of Inoue's status could probably make that happen. Be it a contractual benefit, or him paying to have it advertised himself. Who knows, it's just speculation anyway.

We're just going around in circles here and I have no idea why, so whatever.

When Jin Kobayashi's one-shot serialized in Shonen Jump. They also mentioned School Rumble(from Kodansha) already pass 7 million copies print as well.
