Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Anime is just an advertisment for a manga. It works and become an entity of its own, or it doesn't and fades into obscurity. If anime could hurt anything, I would be worrying about One Piece every Sunday.
No, it's not. That is awful :XD
Do you mean to tell me that The Godfather and Silence of the Lambs were merely advertising novels? :lmao

Anime is a separate medium, produced by companies with no stake in the manga. Manga adaptions didn't even account for a third of the anime produced this year. This fall there were 42 new anime. Only eleven were based on manga (while included on the list, Pupa was delayed, it will air in January). Non No Biyori, based on an obscure 4koma, turned out to be the most popular new (not including sequels) manga adaption of the season. The success of an anime does not depend on whether the manga gets a sales boost or not.

Anime can work in a synergistic manner for a manga series, but that isn't it's sole purpose, nor is it the reason an anime is made. It's entirely possible for it to become an entity of it's own, but I don't think that if it flops, it has much of an effect on the original series. The fandoms don't necessarily have to be linked.

...And that's exactly what I was trying to say, that anime adaptations has no negative effect on the adapted material whatsoever.

Don't know why Kaiten had to bring the unrelated original anime into a discussion about adaptations.

Yeah but the statement that "anime is just an advertisement for a manga" is the part that I don't agree with. It has the potential to affect sales and popularity, but what you said is a bit misleading. The point is, anime isn't made to sell manga. Studios don't bid on it so they can sell more manga for the creator(s).

That is not what you said. It was only one part of your comment. If you're going to say something, be prepared to stand behind everything you said, not just one statement, not just what you want to defend. If someone misunderstands what you said, be prepared to explain everything, not just part. If you can not explain what you meant by "Anime is just an advertisment for a manga", drop the conversation now.

Don't know why Kaiten had to bring the unrelated original anime into a discussion about adaptations.
Manga adaptions do not exist in a void. They are one of many sources for anime, taking no particular precedence over the others. You can not tell me to ignore three quarters of the anime produced just because it does not suit the purposes of your statement.

You have no right to ever tell me, or anyone else, what we can, or can not, bring into a conversation, as long as the discussion remains on topic. I find your attitude deeply offensive, and incredibly childish.

For me, UQ Holder is pretty disappointing; I prefer Negimax100 than that.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

So. Fairy Tail and Yamada sales decreasing. I'm not surprise about Yamada since last sold had live-action effect and now it's end. people might not follow it after they finish watched live-sction. but Fairy Tail didn't have any sign of decline long time but suddenly decrease this volume? strange.

As for UQ Holder. it's probably first serie in Magazine since oricon start which able to surpass 100k mark with its first volume(not counting Kindaichi or GTO spin-off)

I think it possibly little bit difficult for UQ to reach 100k mark while in top 50.

Akamatsu Ken has been a mangaka for twenty years. He's not new, UQ Holder is not necessarily popular. It is possible UQ Holder was only purchased by fans who have been following him since Love Hina. Don't presume something is widely popular based only on a number, especially one as small as UQ Holder's first week sales. Many factors influence sales, not just popularity. What looks like a hit to someone outside of Japan might only be popular with a small niche within.

Well I re-think it difficult like you said.

I don't think 65k in its first week is "small"
actually, I myself is Akamatsu fan either. but I don't find how this number disappoint. it's just first week of first volume though. and I never expect it equally his previous serie anyway.

And I guess Akamatsu's name value not as big as you said.

65,000 is not a bestseller. It's a modest number.

Who said they were disappointing? I only said they did not indicate widespread popularity. They don't. Nanatsu's sales don't either. Is there anything to indicate, by sales alone, if anyone other than shounen actions fans has read, or even heard of Nanatsu?

And I guess Akamatsu's name value not as big as you said.
He's old. He's been around since the mid-90's. He's not hip, he's not happening, he's not the face of manga in the 2010's. His name is enough to sell 60,000 or so of a new series, and no more. You also badly missed my point. The point is that UQ Holder's first week sales do not indicate widespread acceptance and acclaim ("popularity") from a large segment of Japanese society. They more likely indicate a small niche of readers. Because it is based on a known author, we can say that sales reflect interest from Akamatsu fans, not from the broad spectrum of Japanese manga fans. Treating sales as an exact indication of popularity would be a fallacy, incorrect on every, and all, levels. Discussing sales like they are shounen character power rankings is wrong, that is not how business works. A massive number of manga volumes are released per year. It is a multi-billion dollar industry. Different books appeal to different audiences. Some audiences spend more on manga than others. Sales are influenced by a massive number of outside factors. Popularity is the least of them.

65k on first week for first volume is actually high for WSM manga.

WSM range? Who cares? Magazine sales have been declining for years. It's a dying format. What makes you think a lot of people who buy tankobon of Sho Mag manga also buy the magazine every week? What does UQ Holders sales rank among Sho Mag manga have to do with anything, anyway? As if the same people who read Seitokai Yakuindomo also read UQ Holder. Just because two manga come from the same anthology does not mean they have even remotely similar audiences.

Unless the meaning of "high" has changed, 65,000 copies in not high by Sho Mag standards. "Great, or greater than normal, in quantity, size, or intensity." Fairy Tail, Nanatsu, Ace of Diamond, Ahiru no Sora. Their first week sales are high by Sho Mag standards. 65,000 is not low. Medium, average, slightly above average might be more accurate. Comparable to Area no Kishi or Seitokai Yakuindomo. Comparing manga sales just because they are in the same magazine would be silly though. Seitokai Yakuindomo is a 4koma that rarely exceeds six pages per chapter, but still sells over 100,000 copies per volume. SYD has a popular anime franchise, with a second season starting in January. Outbreak Company (a light novel franchise and recent anime) even included a prominent SYD reference, alongside references to Shingeki, Shana, Yotsubato, and Fullmetal Alchemist. Area no Kishi sells about the same, only with full length chapters, and no anime. Area no Kishi's anime was a flop.

Potentially that is true for a series from an unknown no name who is making their debut...but this is a manga from someone already established in the manga making world as pointed out earlier, for a series that sold millions...I think expectations would have been higher for a debut of his next manga.

Like didnt Bakuman from the folks that did Death Note, start out over 100K at volume 1.

The popularity between Akamatsu and Ohba/Obata duo is different.

Volume one of Gin no Saji, by the mangaka of Hagaren, also sold more during it's first week. Akamatsu is an older mangaka, his name doesn't necessarily have the same appeal as Obata and Ohaba, or Arakawa Hiromu. Negima was not as famous as Death Note or Hagaren, very few manga are. Love Hina ended twelve years ago, practically ancient history. 65,000 copies is not low, it just is not high, either. Not enough to proclaim UQ Holder a popular manga. Sales for volume two and three probably will rise. Volume one sales are usually kept deliberately low. Stores don't want to over order a new title, getting stuck with a lot of unwanted copies. That is true even for established mangaka. Bakuman's first volume sales were lower than later volumes. Gin no Saji too.
