Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Ao Haru Ride #9 is selling in two weeks more than volume #8. I'm so proud.
Wanna see how much the anime will increase sales.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Volume 1 of Hoozuki rose back into the top 50. More could follow. I wonder if this is the beginning of something.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Akame ga Kill! #9 (37,121) was enough for an anime? Odd considering Tokyo Ghoul #10 (78,148 / 172,921) is also announced for one as well.

Well, even Mushibugyo (has even lower sale than Akame) got the anime, so I think it really wasn't weird for Akame to get an anime.

Manga are not adapted to anime based on sales.

Anime are basically just advertisements for the manga.
Yes, a series that isn't popular at all won't get an anime.
But a series that has a decent fanbase and could benefit from getting an anime will likely get one.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

Anime are not advertisements for manga. I don't know why people keep saying this. A publisher/mangaka charges a studio licensing for money. Any synergistic effect is a bonus. It's obvious studios are the ones who go shopping for something they think can be popular in an animated form, the publishers don't go around campaigning for their properties to get adapted.

The only time where popularity of a manga is tied to whether a series gets an anime or not is in the case of Weekly Shounen Jump. And even then, sales are not the be-all-end-all measurement of popularity. Other than that, it doesn't really work that way. The majority of anime adaptations in a season are from manga or light novels that sell a fraction of what an average manga from WSJ does.

An anime adaptation is not an advertisement for manga, but it certainly does attract audiences who would otherwise won't be acquainted with the series.

I have a feeling that it could very well be the beginning of something. I lurk through Japanese Twitter and noticed a few Hoozuki icons cropping up here and there. At the very least his pet goldfishes are gaining popularity.

It's a bit like saying that movies are just advertisements for books. A popular movie can boost books sales, but movies don't exist to promote books. That isn't the goal at all. To read his post it almost sounds as if he thinks anime are thirty minute infomerical for manga.

It was also the third most DVR'ed anime in the Tokyo area, using the PlayStation Torne device. It seems like the anime has been pretty popular. http://mangahelpers.com/forum/showt...DVR-Rankings?p=3684096&viewfull=1#post3684096

IA. It's funny when you consider that there IS a televised advertisement for manga... in a form of a 15 second commercial.

Interesting! It hasn't been a month yet since the anime aired so I'm curious to see where its popularity picks up from here.

I thought Kodansha was trying to get Vinland Saga an anime.

Couldnt both situations be true, manga company wants to get some series with potential to be big, big so they try to get someone to animate it. And then the oher case is an anime studio wants to get some high selling series potentially, so they try to get a big manga series to animate?

Only manga that looked like an anime studio just wanted to animate it just because seemed like Shaft and Nisekoi, and whoever is doing Knights of Sidonia...

That is an odd situation. Not sure if Kodansha explicitly said that, but they did address the fact that Vinland Saga has had no anime offers due to the confusion around a "Big Announcment" and Vinland Saga being on the same page. There must have been enough confusion and questions asked regarding it that they had to make some sort of comment on it. But I don't think that means that Kodansha is actively doing anything about it. I mean, what could they do? Help fund it themselves?

I think if a series gets popular enough, most of the time it will get noticed and adapted. I'm not suggesting that studios don't take popularity and thus sales into consideration, but they probably have to believe the source material is something worth their time and money. So I don't really think Publishers can accomplish much by shopping their series around, so why do it? It seems most publishers wait for them to be approached.

It's also worth noting that Yukimura's first series, Planetes, didn't start airing until the manga was almost complete. It could be a similar situation with Vinland Saga, which doesn't seem like it's anywhere close to ending.

Re: Weekly Oricon Comic Rankings

The company could heldit back till the manga nears its end like they did with deathnote. Its not like an anime couldn't promote a finished series. It does even better so, because you can buy the whole thing at once!
