Devilyman win 9th Gold Futur Cup.

#49 (03/11) :
Haikyû (Color)
Thought that one was pretty good, same with Brain Breaker. Rokotsu San I did not enjoy and was unable to read Nejiyama. I hope Brain Breaker gets serialized with some slight tweaks.

Golden Future Cup winners hasn't had luck nowadays... NuraMago and Beelzebub made some success, yes, but since Hungry Joker, the credibility has been low...

some stories don't work as a series. also the changes were great so of course the reaction could differ.

Question.

Oda for example makes a lot of money (in the billions of yen range), but how much of it is actually put aside for later? I read that with his wage, he must pay 40% of it as tax. That's a lot. Then there's supporting his family on daily basis, etc.

How would his bank account look like? Any idea? Obviously he can be considered a millionaire, right?

We have no idea, generally people don't talk about their bank accounts.... We can say that he is millionaire though.

How do we know if he is a millionaire if we dont know his bank accounts or other assets?

One Piece is the biggest manga in history, it sells 3 million every volume. Please, you do not need to be genius to come to that conclusion. Simple math can say it to you.

Here we have the simple math I'm talking about. :cookiehand
He earns just 10%? I thought he earned much more than this, he does the hard work. :o

The money goes into supporting his family. Also for future savings.

Manga industry has a very high royalty percentage compared to western comic book authors who on average get something around 5% for pros and even far below that for beginners.

I didn't know that, it's very strange to me. xD
However, the publisher has more costs with the production, I understand this point...

I guess they have no way of knowing how much he would earn from the anime, toys and merchandise.

A Japanese television show once calculated how much money Oda makes. Greg from OP Podcast (and so on) translated it and posted it:
Interesting program on TV attempted to break down Oda’s salary. They admit it’s NOT 100% concrete but they attempted to be as accurate as possible. They brought in three guests to help deal with the calculations, all of them big-time former... editors:

Nobuhiko Horie- Former editor of City Hunter and former editor-in-chief of Weekly Shonen JUMP

Pak Chon-Hyong- Former editor of GTO @ Shonen Magazine

Ryunosuke Ito- Former editor of Psychometrer Eiji @ Young Magazine

First they looked at the fields authors get their money from:
(keep in mind these values are ROUGHLY in dollars)

-Original Work
They suggested a manga author typically can make $100 per page and can move up from there with experience. Two of the panel suggested Oda is currently paid $500 per page, the other suggested $300. They went with $500. and decided to calculate 500 by 20 pages by 48 chapters per year. This works out to roughly $480,000

(If I was doing it I probably would have calculated at 19 pages given Oda’s current work.)

-Printing Tax

This is the figure for tanks. Authors receive approximately 10% of sales. That roughly $4.20 times 32,340,000 tanks sold last year (!!!) times 10%. Roughly $13,582,800.

@_@

-Use of Properties

This is for the anime and movie(s) whenever they’re aired or shown. The author is estimated to get about $3,000 per episode $10,000 per movie. With 50 anime episodes per year and one film that’s $160,000

-Foreign Use

Basically what he gets from overseas sales. They estimate it at $2,000,000.

-Use of Characters

Essentially what he receives for the use of characters for merchandise and DVD sales. They estimated $15,000,000.

Add it all up?

$31,222,800

So I guess that the reason authors of big manga series like One Piece, Bleach etc have 2 editors is because of all the calculation that goes into the franchise earnings and to ensure they don't give or take extra money from either sides?
