Viz is owned by Shueisha and Shogakukan, so there shouldn't exist any licenses and royalties in question.

The only costs a series should have in Viz Weekly Shonen Jump is the translator(and other staff if there is more) and marketing. If the series has physical volumes it would be the print cost as well. And also an increase cost in the servers(keeping the magazine issues with a given limit in pages will certainly save a lot of money later).
You need to look into the US manga market (Viz and Kodansha USA specifically) more because this is not the case.

This topic is more suited for the US manga industry thread though.

A US licensing company being owned by a Japanese publisher doesn't just make the licensing fees magically disappear. The author is still expecting to be paid, and Shueisha isn't just going to cover that out of the goodness of their hearts. All the ownership does is give them exclusivity, they still have to pay for things.
The author is also paid in japan. Nobody is talking of that. Here it was being talked about the magazine and the cost of having more titles. So the licenses and royalties here has to do with a foreign company paying the source company. Here the foreign company money comes from the source company, and earnings end up going one way or another to the source company. There is no need to having the bureaucracy and the money exchange complexity that normally happens. That is one of the main reasons for owning other companies.

When you get a license you normally also get exclusivity! So if all ownership gives is exclusivity then owning another company wouldn't make much sense.

Viz pays for things just like Shueisha pays for things in Japan. There is no extra layer of licenses between companies.
Shueisha only pays authors royalties for volume sales and merchandise, not for chapters in the magazine. For that they pay a semi-fixed salary, with pages number and color/cover pages taking in consideration.
Unless Viz/English Shonen Jump magazine is treated as a volume or some other kind of merchandise , there is no extra payment to the authors.

I'd have to go and find it, somehow, but Viz did say that the authors get royalties from ESJ several times. It might be on a per page basis, since something like that was implied.

Here they are talking of manga volumes, not Magazine, and author royalties. When talking of publisher licences is in general about all american publishers, so there is no distinction.

In my post I was just saying that Viz doesn't has licences and royalties contracts with Shueisha, not that they don't pay the authors.

Yeah, I saw in your second post, I need to find the podcast where Viz was talking about ESJ royalties. That will take a while.

Ah, I'm seeing, is like if they are being paid for making content in another magazine. But if it is per page basis, is that still called royalties?

No idea, but that's what they called it. I vaguely recall there being a question about ESJ and royalties and one of the editors started talking about it being per page, but the EIC, Andy Nakatani chimed in, sorta to say "we're not at liberty to discuss these things."

Either that or my memory sucks and they were talking about something else entirely, but I'm fairly certain that's what I heard.

You mean you just used Google translate? Because a year ago you weren't able to read any Japanese.

Yes, it is written Judozu in the title. It is katakana though
ジュウドウズ = Juudouzu
外伝 = Gaiden

From this we can say that it is a extra story from Juudouzu.

柔も轟に = This part is out of my scope. :lmao

It is possible to learn katakana in one week if you really want.

So this may just be the extras that were promised for the Judos volume three. I don't care enough about Judos to find out.....

It's a two-chapter prequel, with part 2 coming out on April 5.
True, but he specifically said Kanji's.
It's just a pet peeve of mine when people act like they know something when they really don't.
I totally agree with you, but I really feel that this might not be the best place to come if that's the case, given the... shall we say, kind of people who frequent it.

Bolt is acceptable, although it is more suitable for a dog. :p
However, Sarada (Salad)? Sasuke and Sakura don't have love for their daugther? XD
Curiosity: サラダ comes from the Portuguese name for Salad: Salada.

I wonder if that's why the new Jump Start is being so weird.

If ESJ doesn't translate any series from this round and either Black Clover or Kagamigami end up making it big (because I sincerely doubt Roggy and UBS will last more than 6 months) I'm going to laugh a lot because that'll confirm that ESJ has a terrible eye for what to translate from the very beginning
I mean, the only series that they've translated from ch1 that can be called a hit is WT XD
