Yeah, danger if Invel won. Gray was nowhere near worried that Invel would win because he knows that he was holding back. That makes the most sense.

Gray was just getting warmed up, so he still had plenty of new moves and the "trump card" to try out.

So why would he be anywhere near worried there?

I don't really get this statement to be honest...

Again, the reason why Gray did not get serious because he didn't need to be.

You keep on assuming that Gray was trying, but you can't assume that.

By context, Mashima showed Gray was just getting warmed up. Therefore, he had no reason to be worried that Invel "might" win.

Gray is a lot stronger than you think... he can fight on par with Partial END... no way he is going to lose to Invel, even if he has to push over 50% of his full power.

And btw, it wasn't Gray who was responsible for Juvia's death.

It was all f***ing Brandish's fault!! (Not you @Brandish, dw, :teehee)

Nah but really... how can you blame Gray when:

1.) Brandish distracted Gray by grabbing Lucy, Happy and Natsu.

2.) Brandish didn't take Juvia along as well

Like c'mon, the blame was clearly on Brandish there... no excuses...

You blame Gray for not being "serious" when his friends were frozen, but let's see if you would blame Natsu:

During the fight with Jacob, Jacob held all FT members "hostage" via Transport, and he could've killed all of them instantly at any moment.

Instead of going full power FDKM, Natsu was fighting in base mode casually and then got taken down.

Please, you can't tell me that was being serious.

If anything, we should be talking about why Natsu didn't go full powered FDKM against Jacob from the beginning instead of talking about Gray who was actually fighting Invel.

Dude, don't tell me you actually believe in that...

If Natsu was going close to full power with his FDK spell against Jacob without going into Dragon Force, then I would officially say:

Gildartz = Laxus = Gray = DF Gajeel = Erza >>>>>>> Natsu

You and I both know that Natsu wasn't going anywhere near full power against Jacob. I'm not a Natsu fan and even I know that.

Oneshot her with an unnamed attack in base mode?

That's as factual and close to the truth as I can get.

And why did he use base spells against Dimaria, but FDK spells against Jacob?

Oh wait, because he was angry and desperate to save Lucy... <--- Same case with Gray

I'm not equating angry to darkness. I'm saying that Natsu also has an emotional power up via Enraged Mode.

For Gray, it's Darkness, but for Natsu, it's Rage.

I agree with everything here except Laxus training more than Gray...

Gray had a motivation over the 1-year to train, just like Natsu...

Gray wanted to fulfill his father's dying wish and defeat END... he has to train more than Laxus.

And even if I'm being nice and assuming that he didn't, the most we can say is that Laxus and Gray trained equally.

There is no way I'm going to believe Laxus trained more when he joined Blue Pegasus while Gray was training to take down END.
Gray was clearly portrayed as trying his hardest, and was clearly worried during the fight,

Natsu vs Dimaria was off panel, you dont know what happened there, no one does, for all we know Dimaria was even more of a challenge than Gray

Gray being 'cold'... Gray's friends being frozen... Gray being stalemated by a guy who was fighting one-handed...

You keep on assuming that Gray was trying, but you can't assume that.
Why can't I assume? It's only natural to do this when you don't know something (a great deal of these power discussions are assumptions). My assumptions and interpretations are supported by Gray's actions and how his magic works.

By context, Mashima showed Gray was just getting warmed up. Therefore, he had no reason to be worried that Invel "might" win.

Idk, perhaps maybe Gray doesn't fight like he's cocky and thinks he'll win. He just tries, and realises the urgency of a situation. Perhaps that is a better way of putting it than 'worrying'.

Gray is now that strong, after the power up, for sure.

And btw, it wasn't Gray who was responsible for Juvia's death.

I agree with Brandish interfering, gave Invel the opportunity for Ice Lock.

But if he could whoop Invel in base (without a power up), why did he not do so before Brandish showed up? Yet what we were shown is Gray not getting ahead while demonised. To me this fact doesn't bode well with what you're telling me happened.

Natsu didn't want to destroy the guild. I don't think I need to bring up the panels... but Natsu said it himself. Not only that, but he also had no method of retrieving the members from Transport... Lucy was the only person who could resolve that.

Dude, don't tell me you actually believe in that...

If Natsu was going close to full power with his FDK spell against Jacob without going into Dragon Force, then I would officially say:

Gildartz = Laxus = Gray = DF Gajeel = Erza >>>>>>> Natsu

You and I both know that Natsu wasn't going anywhere near full power against Jacob. I'm not a Natsu fan and even I know that.
As soon as Natsu uses FDKM, he's using his best flames. Every spell he drops in that mode is a strong spell, that'd burn through more MP than anything else apart from Dragon Force. Magic is a power, both in quantity (MP/amount of ethernano) and how well you can use that MP over time. FDKM expends more power than his base flames... hence it's reasonable to assume Natsu is going at full in this mode. What he did to Jacob was over the top.

And that scaling is just silly... >>>>>>>>> Natsu bit mainly.

Oneshot her with an unnamed attack in base mode?

I'd love to see a panel of that for it to be factual, but I'm okay with that interpretation.

For Gray, it's Darkness, but for Natsu, it's Rage.
Just because you're not, it doesn't mean that other are doing the same.

The main beef of your original post is the use of 'darkness Gray' as a term... it is fan made, but you've got to be aware that people are going to call things different to yourself.

Tbh it's better to call the Gray that fought END 'Gray', and the Gray that fought Invel in 498 'pre-darkness Gray'. It's the same as Gray in Tartarus... he got a power up against Silver in that arc so you have to acknowledge the point in the manga where he became magically stronger.

(note I'm assuming Gray did get a power up against Invel)

I agree with everything here except Laxus training more than Gray...

I don't care about motivation tbh. What matters is how much you train. I could be studying to become a doctor to save a loved ones life, and someone else could be studying to become a doctor for money. Assuming we have the same intelligence/knowledge initially, the person who will do better in exams is the one who studies the most. It just so happens to be that Gray has 6 months of training (with Juvia mostly and it didn't look rigorous... her power increase was low), Laxus went on a training mission and was rarely at BP, and Natsu had to constantly train for at least 10 months. I stand by what I said before.

Not that it matters... If plot/Hiro demands someone to be at a certain level, they will be. It just happens to be that in my opinion Gray came back weaker than Natsu, and with a power up, he closed the gap.

For this whole first part of your post, I disagree, but I'll leave it as that.

Gray was getting warmed up like I was saying..

Since when does an FT mage immediately go into a fight and whoop a Spriggan?

The battle hardly progressed enough for Gray to defeat Invel.. that's a bit unfair to ask of Gray.

Brandish's interruption is at fault here for the screwed up battle.

That's why during that week, the Gray fans really wanted a solo fight between Gray and Invel because we knew this kind of BS would happen to Gray...

Natsu didn't want to destroy the guild. I don't think I need to bring up the panels... but Natsu said it himself. Not only that, but he also had no method of retrieving the members from Transport... Lucy was the only person who could resolve that.

I agree that Lucy is one way to retrieve the members from Transport.

But Natsu could have just been serious and oneshot Jacob out cold.

Then Jacob can't kill anybody who is trapped inside Transport. After that, since he is a magic-user, put magical cuffs on him to cancel out his magic.

Then Transport will be canceled and everybody will be safe.

As for destroying the guild hall, Natsu was able to oneshot Dimaria without causing any major damage to the guild hall.

And let's be honest here, what's more important?

Your friends' lives or a guild hall that has been destroyed hundreds of time in the past?

Natsu has his priorities backwards, clearly he wasn't taking the whole situation seriously.

The main point of my argument is that Gray is the only one subjected to "power-up prefixes/epithets" when nobody else is.

Everybody has done the exact same thing as Gray, he isn't the first one... yet all of their PoF feats go the original character.

Ex. Natsu, Laxus, Erza

So why does Gray have to be the first one to be called by a split persona?

Ex. Gray, Darkness Gray

That's absurd. Gray beat Invel by the results of his 1-year timeskip. It has nothing to do with an external factor of Darkness overcoming Gray and making him stronger.

One, that was never proven by Mashima, so idk where "Darkness Gray" came from.

But two, that is the core development of Gray's character, and you can't just deny that by treating as if there are 2 types of Gray, when there is clearly only one.

We have no proof that Laxus trained more than Gray, nobody can deny that...

If anything, we have more proof/speculation to believe Gray trained a lot more.

And again, even if he didn't, then the most we can say without any bias is that Laxus and Gray trained the same amount.

Gray could have trained for more than 6 months.. who said he couldn't train during his infiltration mission in Avatar?

Gray always went off by himself, he wasn't with the Avatar members 24/7.

Not going to go through everything but I'd just like to address one point: How would Natsu even know about Transport? Remember, he was unconscious the whole time that stuff was happening and he woke up to an empty guild with the exception of Jacob, Lucy, and Mavis. How would he know that Jacob had done something to everything else? For all he knew the rest of the guild might have just evacuated. So I don't think it's quite fair to blame Natsu when he couldn't possibly know that Jacob had all his friends in custody.

Well, Jacob did say it out loud...

And to be honest, Natsu not knowing that his guildmates are in custody should give him more of a reason to oneshot Jacob instead of playing around..

And btw, I think you misunderstood me.

The whole reason why I brought up Natsu vs. Jacob is because people are saying that Gray should have put in more effort when Invel insta-froze his team.

I'm actually the one arguing that both Natsu and Gray didn't need to put a lot of effort because both of them knew that nobody's lives were in immediate danger.

With Natsu, Jacob is stupid, so the dude got distracted from using Transport and was focusing on not looking at Lucy's boobs.

With Gray, Invel's intentions were not to shatter team Natsu. His focus was on Gray and his potential to beat END.

When?

I need proof of a panel if somebody is gonna say Gray was trying his hardest and was worried.

How about Natsu fooling around when Jacob had the whole guild trapped in Transport ready to die within a second?

Why don't we talk about that.

No actually, we do know what happened.

Dimaria was 1 second away from stabbing Lucy's eyes out.

The only way Natsu could save Lucy is if he oneshotted Dimaria very quickly... which he did.

And since Natsu didn't yell out any attack, that means it was unnamed.

We also saw that he was in base mode before going partial END.

All the proof is there.

There is your panel evidence everything about Gray's attitude, to his facial expression, inner monologue, to going DeS portrays Gray giving the battle everything he had, i dont see how anyone can claim he was holding back, its simply not how the chapter portrayed the fight.

What about Natsu and everyone in Transport? The level of casualness Natsu displayed was completely incomparable to Gray, and even then we could still see Natsu was trying pretty hard to keep up, even feeling the need to go FDK mode as soon as he got the opportunity.
As for why Natsu was so casual, dunno, cause he is an idiot? Though it could also be because it is highly unlikely that Natsu even knows what happened to his guild mates, all he knew was that Jacob was probably responsible.

Uh.... no, Dimaria not gouging out Lucy's eyes doesnt mean a one shot... doesnt even imply it. Dimaria may have simply turned around to face Natsu the moment she heard him break out of his chains, Natsu may have simply punched her away from Lucy, in fact we already know that Dimaria at least had the opportunity to initiate time stop, which right there is pretty solid evidence that it was not a one shot.
We didnt see the fight, so naturally we didnt see Natsu yelling out any names for any attacks, besides, all his attacks on Gray were unnamed.

Well, Jacob did say it out loud...

Jacob only said that at the end of the fight, right before Lucy brought out Gemini. So all the fighting that Natsu had done beforehand was without that knowledge.

And to be honest, Natsu not knowing that his guildmates are in custody should give him more of a reason to oneshot Jacob instead of playing around..
How exactly? I'm a little confused as to what your reasoning for this is.

Yes I'm well aware of your stance, but it's a stance I happen to yet again, unfortunately, disagree with. Even if his friends weren't in any immediate danger Gray himself certainly was and I see no reason why he would purposely restrict himself for no reason against such a formidable opponent (yes I know the Spriggans aren't as impressive as they were hyped to be but Gray didn't know that). Natsu's case is different because trying to preserve the guild, regardless of whether or not you think it's dumb, was a legitimate reason for him to hold back. And considering that Natsu had just come back from beating the shit out of Zeref and he was fully rested, he probably thought (arrogantly and inaccurately of course) that he could take Jacob out while holding back. Gray isn't that kind of character, there's no way he would think he could win with minimal effort.

With Natsu, Jacob is stupid, so the dude got distracted from using Transport and was focusing on not looking at Lucy's boobs.
Like I said above, Natsu held back to prevent from destroying the guild. Natsu had no knowledge of this weakness of Jacob's before the whole fanservice scene, which occurred after quite a bit of fighting.

With Gray, Invel's intentions were not to shatter team Natsu. His focus was on Gray and his potential to beat END.
Gray had no idea that Natsu was capable of breaking out of the ice so if anything Team Natsu being frozen should have given him even more of an incentive to try because if he loses, the whole of Team Natsu is pretty much dead.

Just to note.
Many here seemsnot to be aware of the fact that pure strenght and magic power are not the only factors to considerin match-ups.
You also have to consider the type of magic that is used. For example I think we can all agree that both Erza and Lucy are stronger than Marin, but were both owned at the same time.
Or how Mira was one of the few (if not the only one) who could have dealt with Sayla.Or how Wendy is a perfect counter for Irene.etc.

Where are people getting that Wendy is a perfect counter to Irene? Just because they both enchant doesn't mean that Wendy is a perfect counter to Irene. And there is absolutely nothing impressive about Transport, like seriously. It takes a hell of a lot of time to actually transport the targets even if they are in the AoE (even after the initial clap), and if the battle is taking place outside, there is nothing stopping anyone from literally just jumping out of its AoE because its pretty damn small.

Well Wendy did stop Eileen's attack, it would be pretty amazing if Wendy could do that without being some sort of counter, i would even go as far to say she is Erza tier or above if that's the case.

To be fair Jacob has te added advantage of Stealth to go with Transport, doesnt really matter how slow the spell is when you can just go invisible

Based on what we know she isn't, just cause you have the same magic doesn't mean you are a perfect counter (in fact, it doesnt make any sense). Wendy has high tier defensive magic but is weak physically and lacks heavy hitting offensive magic (in DF she gets speed but her strength and durability are still shit). She showed this when she blocked DiMarias full power attack. Granted, I don't think DiMaria is that strong with just Chronos (main source of power is AS) but a full power attack from her should at least be close to Irenes casual fireball in the middle of an orgasm.

Well, the spell is still visible so if he uses it in stealth outright getting out of the way is still viable. Jacob is an assassin, he likely uses transport on unsuspected targets in enclosed spaces (like a room in a house) for maximized efficiency. I don't think Transport is really all that battle oriented.

I agree with what you said about Jacob, i definitely dont think Transport is an instant win, but i still think its an impressive spell.

As for Wendy, well, you could be right, i forgot that she blocked Dimaria's full power attack. However to me, Eileen's reaction to Wendy's intervention, namely being surprised that an enchantment was used, kinda made it look like the fact Wendy could use enchantments too would be important to the battle to come.

Well Wendy did stop her attack. What Irene does is enchant air and set it aflame, while it the last chapter it seemd as if Wendy disenchanted her attack.
The whole arc was like that who was best suited to fight who(Chelia&Ultear vs DiMaria, Gray vs Invel,Lucy with Gemini/the clock spirit vs Jacob,,Gajeel with his iron-lung asspul on Bloodman etc.)

I don't think you're giving Jacob enough credit. He' spell has the AoE bigger then the guild ( http://www.mangareader.net/fairy-tail/477/10 ) .Although it isn't instat it's not too much delayed.Maybe 1-2 second tops.

Where are people getting that Wendy is a perfect counter to Irene? Just because they both enchant doesn't mean that Wendy is a perfect counter to Irene
Because they use the same magic types? We've seen this happen so many times already in the course of the series so why is Wendy stopping Irene's fireball all of a sudden causing people to raise eyebrows like this?
Ultear uses Arc of Time, and she was able to nullify Dimaria's Age Seal around the area where Wendy and Sherria were. This wasn't a case of NLF like with E.N.D,it was simply because they use similar magic types.
Marin was able to cancel Transport, because like Lessio, he uses Space Related Magic. It's similar to the same way Horologium was able to protect Lucy from the earlier Transport Lessio cast immediately he entered the Guild Hall.

Wendy being a counter to Irene is fucking stupid.

If anyone is a counter in that match up, it should be Irene, not the other way around. Irene should be the better enchanter here. She shouldn't be the one getting her enchantments destroyed.
So Wendy casually stopping her enchantment indeed degrades Irene's standing, unless Hiro Mashima is shitwriting as always.

Irene was handicapped and she's bound to have stronger techniques up her sleeve. What Wendy did was counter one of her spells, while Irene was affected by Rankheids magic.
Countering an opponent to some degree is natural.Although I agree. Now that Irene knows Wendy uses enchantments she can backfire it,since like you already said,Irene should miles above Wendy.

Counters aren't even affected by the user's strength, it's just a matter of having a magic type similar to your opponent.
Ultear isn't Spriggan 12 level yet she undid Age Seal, which should be far superior to her own Arc of Time.
Marin was unable to undo Transport, when realistically speaking Lessio should be the far superior user of Space Commandment.
It has nothing to do with being 'the better enchanter' or whatever other terms people want to use here.

Wendy wasn't anywhere near her strongest either.
She wasn't using dragonforce and the spell itself was just as casual.

Except they are and should be.
Ultear did not undo the whole Age Seal. She could barely free 2 people for a limited time. And I would argue that Ultear is far better for simply affecting even the dragons and pretty much the whole universe with her Last Age. Only thing DiMaria can do with time is to stop it. She's a shittier time mage compared to Ultear imo.

We know DiMaria is affected by NLF against barely transformed Natsu while Ultear shown otherwise.

Marin's magic nullifies space time magic. That's his spell.
An actually sensible comparison would be to compare Lucy, Erza, Mest and Lessio. They all use space time magic but none of them can counter, as in disabling each other's magic, each other. Marin's magic is different in its nature. It isn't the same as comparing Wendy with fucking Irene. Wendy getting a disenchantment spell out of nowhere is an asspull.
If it is about who is the better enchanter, Irene should be the one disabling Wendy's spells...

I sense a lot of anger in you o__O

Many things are kinda ˝dumb˝in this arc if you haven't noticed.Marin's magic does nullify spatial magic, but that's not his primary use.It allows the user to ˝own˝space and move freely through it and manipulate it. Ofc that Marin isn't like them. You don't need to have the same magic to be a counter.
If you're refering to the fact that Irene should be superior to Wendy,Then yeah,it's kinda out of nowhere, but she was shown to enchant defenses and disenchant ˝conditions˝.Everyone trained for 1 year,it's not to surprising that they have skill/spells we don't know about.

They just started fighting.Geshhh. Since Wendy saw Irene attack she saw what kind of magic she was using, while Irene was targeting Erza,Wendy jumped in and disenchanted her spell. And,since there was a huge fireball between them,Irene only saw Wendy after her fireball disappeared. Now that Irene knows Wendy can also enchant, she can use a different approach or disenchant Wendy's magic.
Let's just see how the fight goes. :D
