The Seven Deadly Sins. The Seven Greatest Criminals turned Seven Greatest Heroes. Heroes who've been given a rough hand at life but have made the best of their tragic situations, some of which still continue to haunt them to this day. Each one is amazing in their own right and their backstories just add to the intricacies of their character and influences where their character arc will take them.

However, out of these Seven Protagonist, there is one character in particular whose progression stands out from the rest. Not because it's good or exceptional, but because it's so disjointed, scattershot, and, dare I say, bad compared to those we've already seen. The one Sin whose backstory not only feels disconnected from her current path in the story, but who feels like a completely different character from where they started and where they began. The character that I am speaking of?

Why Diane, of course, if the title of the thread didn't make it obvious.

So what happened? She started out as a strong, mature, and more importantly, independent character who more than held her own with the reuniting cast of characters. However, after the first major arc in the series and a certain incident involving a certain, magnificent, pink haired bastard, she's regressed dramatically to a childish character who is seemingly dependent on those surrounding her. Whatever the plan was/is, the execution leaves a helluva lot to be desired and her character has suffered for it.

But before we continue into the major problems, let's go back to the start of the series and see how Diane started out.

From her first appearance in chapter 3 to the start of the Liones Invasion arc, Diane was, well, a Sin. Quirky, yet reliable and more than capable of holding her own in a fight. Her character had agency and was a integral part of the group. During this introductory portion of the story, we also had one of her defining character traits. Her love of Mel. What does this have to do with anything? Well, it gave her a sense of maturity. Diane was feminine, but not "girly", if that makes sense. She was confident in her sexuality and owned it whenever Mel was around. She talked about girl stuff, but was measured in her actions, unlike now where it's pretty much her defining character trait. Another slight thing that's fallen to the wayside it seem is Diane's perceptiveness. Whereas King is pretty much the mouthpiece of power observation now when he's with her, Diane did a fair share of it at the start of the series as well. Both had a good back and forth observing Mel and Ban's fight. Her strength was paramount in the group and very few could withstand her blows.

Quick recap of Diane's role in Liones, she's the 4th Sin to arrive, not counting Merlin who was in disguise at the time, and was greeted by Dreyfus, Helbram, Guila, Jericho, Hauser, and Gil. She put up a valiant struggle before falling to Dreyfus' Break. From this point on, combat wise, she's out of the game. She's saved by Guila and Hauser, and then by King.

Once King arrives, this is where a big shift happens. We get his backstory and learn that he and Diane go back further than anticipated. While it's King's story, we learn that Diane had been out on her own for a quite a while, despite her young age. The circumstances surrounding her initial departure from Megadozer are still unknown, but it was made clear by King that her Creation was advanced for someone her age. Keep this in mind. This is also the time where, in story anyway, Diane regains her memory of King.

After that bit of backstory, she's mostly background until the final fight with Hendy, where she's as useful as the every other Sin not named Mel. They defeat him, everyone high fives, and that's the end of the first arc.

S’all well and good yeah? Well buckle up baby, because shit’s about to go off the rails.

So, a bit into the new arc, we finally learn that Diane’s memories have returned and she wishes to see King. This shit was pretty surprising at the time. Like, holy shit, we’re following through with this much quicker than I anticipated. I wondered where Nakaba would be taking this development. Of course, when it’s revealed, King wasn’t around at the time, but it was great. This, my friends, was around the time I started to warm up to Diane. For the most part, at this point, I’d been neutral to her character in the series and basically only tolerated her because of her association with King. Kinda harsh of me to say, but it’s true. But I wanted to like her and I started to like her more as the series progressed, but then it happened.

Diane versus Gowther.

This fight itself, was fine. The conclusion, on the other hand, was not. Thanks to Gowther, Diane’s memory was, once again, erased. After that, things took a turn for the Sin of Envy.Sometime after that fight, we finally got Diane’s Gaiden. And it was…underwhelming to say the least. The first part started well, but the second part wasn’t good. The entire incident leading to her Sin felt forced and contrived. Random Holy Knight is a catalyst for her Sin. Matrona “dying” in front of Diane due to a Poisoned Arrow that just so happened to be capable of piercing Heavy Metal. Diane’s Envy coming off as an after thought than a legit reason. It just wasn’t engaging as the other Gaiden. Either they set to high a bar or Diane’s wasn’t that good.

So after the lackluster Gaiden, we see Diane runs into Matrona who helps her escape from Galan and Monspiet. Now, the first moment I knew something was off was her reaction to Galan and Monspiet. Fear. Not only fear, but crippling fear. She cowered at the mere mention of them…okay then. And then she proceeds to instantly perk up at the thought of dancing with Matrona, as if dancing has always played a part in her history since her inception…okay then. So, it’s around this time that I noticed that Diane had changed. It becomes a lot more apparent later, but it’s here where she begins to act more childish than before. That maturity at the start is no longer here. Her air headedness is amplified to an annoying degree. She feels like a new character. She didn’t even feel like her Gaiden self that much.

But eefrit, you might be saying, she lost her memory, of course she’s not going to act the same, she doesn’t have the same experiences. And that’s true. She isn’t. But here’s the thing…she didn't need to lose her memory again in the first place. Not only did it rehash the same concept that she was cured from a few chapters ago, this entire sub-plot has done nothing for her character. The way I see it, this isn’t Diane’s subplot, it’s still Gowther’s. Diane’s character hasn’t benefited from this at all. Gowther is the only one who stands to gain anything from this little plot. Everything that Diane is experiencing now could have easily been done with her memory intact and the only thing that would have changed would be that Diane wouldn’t have ran into Matrona, which honestly, doesn’t change a thing either. This entire rant actually began as a complaint I had about Matrona now being inconsequential to Diane’s character since Dolor is the one who has taken to training her. Which is probably for the best, because, as much as I like her, she seemed like a pretty shite teacher who didn’t even explain the basics of Golem’s to Diane. Something King had to do, which, goes back to what I mentioned about her character being more dependent than independent. Anyway, Matrona’s only reason for being there was apparently just to mention the idea of dancing to Diane. She no longer has any point for Diane, except gawk at Diane’s power and, maybe, pull a Zhago.

So where do we go from here? Diane is currently participating in an actual flashback, after which she is supposed to get some training from Dolor, which, aside from putting Matrona out of the job, is cool. But what about her character? Since Gowther isn’t around (and with his recent development, we don't even know if he cares about this shit anymore), I don’t see Diane getting her memory back yet. Even if she did, I doubt it would improve her current characterization. I don’t think Nakaba is going to bring back mature, somewhat measured Diane from the start of the series, especially with Merlin now a regular on the cast. I think Childish Diane will be here to stay as it separates her from the Sin of Gluttony.

I want to like Diane. I do. I wouldn’t have written this rant if I didn’t care about her. But the way she’s been recently handled in this arc has been less than flattering. I’m sure there are a number of you who trust Nakaba to put her back on the path, or hell, maybe even think she never left the path, and that’s fine, but to me, she’s fallen behind the other Sins in terms of interest. Hell, Mel is my least favorite Sin, but at least he’s got something going on and is developing as a character, rather than staying stagnant. I’m hoping for the best but who knows what her future holds in this series.

Anyway, it’s out of my system now and I’m tired of typing. What do you folks think?

Yeah, I also take issue with the way she was handled since the gowther thing. Her character seems stuck between assholes who fondle her memories at their whims. Her character was developing in a way that I at least could make sense originally. She started out as being infatuated with meliodas but otherwise detached from other manga events. Her crush over meliodas clearly looses importance over time and in turn her friendship to elizabeth and sympathy to her cause is given more importance. Then she regains which king took away (like an asshole) and realizes (or remembers) how much she loved him which would have been a relatively tolerable ending to their love story. Well, king would still have had to admit that he was the one who erased her memories which should have gotten him a somewhat severe pounding but other than that this is all stuff that made sense. But then all is undone thanks to gowther. Not only that but her character progression stops altogether. Since that point most of diane's plot points have revolved around her not having her memory. She hasn't really grown any particular way other than maybe strengthwise. We see a bit where her king golem is insanely strong thanks to her feelings but we already knew of her feelings from king so this is hardly a development. Everything on the story seems to revolve around her getting her memories back which when it happens will leave her exactly where she was 100 chapters ago when she lost them. She will be more powerful but character wise she will have gained nothing. Her loosing her memories has not yet contributed anything interesting to the story. It's like we are waiting on this weird surreal plot detour to end so that she can finally move on with her life.

It's not like her character had to be stuck where she is. She could have gone through actual development. But she immediately met matrona whom from her perspective had been dead for a day. So all the grieving she went through over 15 years was made into nothing. Loosing her memory could have conceivably resulted in her developing in entirely different ways but nakaba has taken no such advantages. It's all waiting until she regains her memory so that she can go back to where she was. Or worst, she never regains her lost memories but instead has to go through everything she already went through again to get to the same destination.

You raise some pretty good points I can't but agree with because it's impossible to ignore. Diane's handling in the manga hasn't been the very best for a long time now. I find it interesting that you would address what's happened to her (and still does now) as part of Gowther's sub-plot; I hadn't even considered that angle yet but it makes sense. She was the one who claimed that strong emotions like hers could not easily be erased, such bonds not easily torn and Gowther all but wanted to put that to the test when he used his Lost World attack on her. And it seems he was at least partially right.

Because Diane has essentially undergone a reset as a character, which made her development from that point forward a rather bumpy ride. None of it seems for her betterment and it has annoyed many readers.

But if you look at Diane as a character and as her theme, it seems that she was majorly shaped as a person by the dependency of others. I don't know how to explain it any better but she first was hung-up on King as a child, then returned, both disliked yet also admired Matrona, admired Mel's chivalry for her and how casually and morally he treated her, later on would help him as a Sin and do her fighting for him.

When was the last time Diane has actually figured something for herself, did something for herself, out of her own motivation? She was going to before Gowther nailed her memories to a wall and let them drain out into the gutter, perhaps.

So my sincere hope is that during this memory-re-enactment which serves as training, Diane comes realize what she wants and what she would do. These are events that are long past so they do not directly affect her or anyone of that time she interacts with, yes she eventually will have to make her own decisions in this scenario. I hope it helps her emerge as an independet, strong and self-confident character and woman again who will obviously continue to fight and protect those she holds dear but who also fights for herself and her own goals and ideals.

I understand exactly what you mean. If I'm being honest, it's an idea that could have worked if it was expanded upon. Have it where she sees the best qualities in those people and would somewhat design herself after them in a subconscious or conscious form of jealously. Have it where she is someone who is trying to find out where she belongs in the world and who she is as a person without influence. That would make for a good character arc. Especially if, after she was convicted of killing Matrona, she modeled herself even more after Matrona.

Like, in the manga Claymore, there was a character named Roxanne of Love and Hate. She was a fighter who'd become infatuated with those stronger than her and model herself after them completely until she surpassed them, after which, due to their strength no longer being "beautiful" to her, she'd kill them. Of course, not as extreme, but something along those lines could have been interesting.

If we had to go the memory route, Matrona's own character could've been delved into a bit more. She could've felt guilty on how she raised Diane and would've seen this opportunity to raise and treat her how she should've been treated since their time at Megadozer. This would've been Matrona's redemption for Diane and Dolores. That's kinda what happened, but we didn't really get Matrona's thoughts on it. She just showed up and started treating Diane better.

But anyway, having her make her own decisions in this flashback would be a start on recovering her character. She'd have to keep doing so afterwards though.

This is something I meant to bring up as well. Matrona's being dead has no impact on Diane anymore because, as you've mention, from Diane's perspective it hasn't even been a day. Then it gets glossed over because of Diane's memory loss.

I liked early Diane a lot, she was cute(she still is) and her attempts to charm Meliodas were funny, there was some depth behind it too, but more importantly, she felt like a real warrior, there was a clear difference of attitude in combat mode, she had everything and felt more like the main heroine to me. I still believe that the memory loss might have affected her combat abilities, the team up with Gil and Howzer against the Crawler support that. It'd make sense because Diane was a rough diamond, even though she had received training from Matrona, she had not enough battle experience, I think she got that when she quickly evolved when the Sins.

As she is now she is a bit too much of a dork, (her initial reaction to Dolor dodging her attacks irked me). She doesn't get much from her love for King IMO, it affects King's development and his character much more, at this point she feels like his trophy for his happy ending. Certain traits she had before the fight with Hendrickson fight disappeared(might be because we didn't see her with all her memories for long though), I found the sudden change once he she remembered everything too radical as well, but she was still cool. Now she is disappointing, it's hard to believe she is a Sin. Her relationship with King is handled much better however, because Nakaba got better I believe(still doesn't think she really benefits from it as a character, right now at least). Maybe Nakaba preferred to let her like that for symbolism, she seems to be in love in him in the recent chapter. Her memory loss can be considered as a part of Gowther's subplot I agree(and she totally asked for it :heh). What he did was horrible and he doesn't get why King punched him, it'll be interesting to see how he will deal with all of this. I am so hyped for his arc :down.

Thanks to that flashback and the things she'll experience, chances are high that she'll become more like the Diane we used to know. But now that Merlin is here, she can no longer be my favorite female character :cheez.

Now it's been a few weeks after the conclusion of Diane's "arc", I'm curious to see how those who had issues with her treatment are feeling about her now.

While she has somewhat let up on the super girly moments, aside from remembering her past with King and her love for him, she still didn't get any sort of development on a personal level. That is incredibly disappointing, especially since her character now just seems to be there to motivate other characters, with no real motivation on her behalf.

I really hope this is some meta commentary on the fact that the sin of Envy is the one that has nothing of it´s own.

But on reality, to me it feels like Diane feel victim to some factors.

These are:
1.Power Escalation
2.Fanservice
3.More main girls
4.Poor planning

I will talk first about Power Escalation.

Her main gimmick was her PHYSICAL POWER, which pretty much no one outside of five named characters could possibly tank at the time, these being Demon!Meliodas, PossesedbyaCommandement!Dreyfus, UndeadExperiment!Helbram, Demon!Hendrickson and Hacker!Merlin.
Even her own magic reflected that since the rocks and metals are essentilly harder fists for her, with ONE exception I can think off being her quicksand attack against Gila, which, guess what, you can escape if you have enough physical power.
Even if that list has five characters, that still puts Diane way above in-universe, which seemed like a fair tradeoff for having less speed and being a bigger targer (which her fight against Dreyfus proved that us that reality ensues), BUT, with the turning point of the demons appearing, her physical power was reduced to nothing and her rocks were pretty much clay, effectively rendering her the worst sin at the time. Heck, even the other giants shown fighting in the series, Dolor and Matrona, had their physical streght and magic trashed by others. Considering they have no buff or debuff ability as the likes of the Fairies or Gowther do, giants went from top tier race to bottom tier as well.
King brings versatibility, Ban brings endurance, Escanor brings raw holy power, Gowther brings memory manipulation, Merlin brings unparalelled magic knowledge, Meliodas is the MC. And I challenge any of you to tell me how the hell would Diane beat any of them.

The next point is fanservice.

While you could say, "Kato, she had her butt shown and a cleavage widonw since the start of the series!", I will make you two questions: First, do you think one pieces like her cloth are sexy? And have you ever seen a non-swimmer fanservice character use one in anime?
If you are like me, the aswer will be no to both, and that is not even entering into the whole Giant fetish thing, which is a minor demographic.
Which would explain why now she is more featured normal sized into more common type of fanservice clothes. She does have hard competition with Elizabeth and Merlin around.

Which brings us to the next point: More girls.

At the begginig, Diane was the comic relief/battle serious type of character, which worked well with Elizabeth´s naive/determined type of character, and their friendship is one I really find beliviable unlike most of manga, with their moment of Diane´s taking Eli to Bast Prision on account of the latters determination and the end party of the arc with Diane asking Eli to stop calling her sir diane and call her just diane as one of the highlights of the manga (I really enjoy well built friendship).
However, we now have a much serious, tragic Elizabeth; And the stoic/battle serious Merlin. So, there isn´t much space for Diane´s old character (which i think can be made, I am just stating what appears to be happening in the manga), and with Gowther now being emotive and Escanor already having way too much of a spotlight, it falls to diane to be the more emotive, and to add a bit of a liked steryotipe and suply the cuteness that Eli currently is not showing, be cutter.

And to end this, the poor planning.

With all that was said, I believe Diane is a kind of historic leftovers of the author, as she had a gimmick with Meliodas, Giant related situations, and streght.
Now with all of those points rendered moot, the author does not know what to do with her, sending her to the background (the last arc was the history of Dolor and Glox, even if Diane and King were the ones living it) and making her a exposition machine to further the plot of Elizabeth´s.

Diane is becoming my favorite girl again. I am satisfied with her character right now. She is similar to how she was before and tries to learn as much as possible.

I wanted her to act like before and that's what happened. Maybe her character will develop more later but I am fine with how she is for now.

Diane used to be one of my favourite characters, but with how Nakaba rendered her useless with the memory shit, and romantic relationship with King.

I miss the Diane who fodderized Helbram, or the one who went out of her way to save Elizabeth and be her friend. Diane feels like a different character now...

Even after getting her memory back. None your complaints have gone away.

Diane used to be one of my favourite characters, but with how Nakaba rendered her useless with the memory shit, and romantic relationship with King.

I miss the Diane who fodderized Helbram, or the one who went out of her way to save Elizabeth and be her friend. Diane feels like a different character now...
I don't particularly get the feeling that diane is as different a character as you say but I do think she lacks fights. Ever since diane powered up she hasn't had a single fight for herself. We saw the sins gang on up melascula, then she got neutered against chandler and then... nothing. And given how things are turning up it doesn't seem like there even is someone for her to solo.
