I read Tokyo Ghoul's manga and watched the anime but from Fate I only watched Fate/Zero, UBW, the Grand Order movie and the first season of Prisma Illya recently.

Maybe it's because I have not played the VN but I find that several other female characters would be better than Saber. I don't get why she is so popular in the first place.

It's because you haven't played the visual novel.

Which is admittedly like a million hours long and super complicated. The original anime Studio Deen butchered was the Fate route. One of the 3 routes in the game. Ufotable's really good anime was a very abridged version of the second route. Leaving one as of yet unreleased route. The game is all three of those together. Saber is great in all routes.

I actually like Akira quite a bit, one of my favorite characters in Tokyo Ghoul but Saber is too great.

The appeal of Saber is really the dissonance between this heroic person and kind of awkward human being. A hero who has given everything for something and even after her death seeks a way to turn back time and give more. While at the same time has no idea how to actually live.

There's just something about a lady in a proper dress wielding a sword...

And though she was the original Saber (and still the Saber in my mind), I'm okay with an actual name, given TypeMoon's abundance of Saberfaces and neverending variants of different servants summoned under the Saber class.

That's a pretty good summary. She chose to be a symbol and leader at a time when her people needed that, so never got to live a 'normal' life, always being considered more than human. Fate gives her the opportunity to be treated as a regular person, even if only for a short while, and it's that contrast/combination between (what she sees as her) duty and humanity that I find so interesting.

Or as I said, somewhat tongue-in-cheek, in the UBW thread, "She's had a bad day, and just needs a hug."

Honestly, I've watched only a bit of TG and I never seen this Akira
Instead,Saber is an omnipresent waifu character in Fate series.
PLus , she's loved by a lot of people because the story show how Saber feels , who she is and her story
