Although 600k seems a bit too much, if it sells like that I'm fine, it is good for Shueisha. My bet is around the 450k, we'll see.

Someone should ask what pleasure Shimabukuro has in drawing disturbing faces like that. XD

I wonder if Shimabu will have a success after Toriko. His art style is really outdated and it seems like he really wants to stick to the ugly goofy character designs.

Out of all his recent one shots, Chingiri could probably be a hit if it was serialized. Even mangaka, ONE, praised that one shot. It has does have potential. Toriko was Shimabu's most successful series but Takeshi was the one with the most potential. I hope he finds success that could match/surpass both.

Which magazine he serializes in also plays a factor. It'll be a lot harder if he sticks with Grand Jump, a magazine for like people in their 40/50s. I think he should go to Weekly Shonen Jump (again) or try Weekly Young Jump. He seems to be really good friends with Sasuga Yu (Terra Formars) since there was a homage to Terra Formars in Toriko and Sasuga added fan contributions for vol. 29.5....so maybe he might go there....or at least I hope he does.

I agree his art-style does look really outdated with the 80/90s look. Anyways, I want him to try out something entirely new like a horror/psychological series.

I'm not sure what I would want him to do. There's a large Toriko sized hole in my heart that can never be filled by some gag manga. I wonder if Shimabu really enjoyed doing Toriko. It doesn't seem like he wants to do a full action manga since he's only done gag one shots since Toriko's end.

No he definitely enjoyed doing Toriko but is probably frustrated with the rushing he had to do. Also he's always wanting to try something new, before Toriko, he did a sports manga (not based on a real sport).

Comedy will always be part of any series he writes, just like it did with Takeshi, RING & Toriko. It's his specialty.

Didn't Sorachi say more or less the same thing like last year?

So mangaka don't earn anything other than what the manga sells. Sounds like a business rip-off.
This is old news. He's already tweeted back on the 1st that his editor said that the royalties will start coming in.
This is apparently a rather rare case but not the first time this has happened. Mangaka do make money off of merchandise but its usually a licensing fee. Egawa Tatsuya said on TV that the mangaka earns a set fee for each anime episode made. The same works for the Gintama movie. Sorachi doesn't get a share of revenue but a fixed licensing fee. The manga volume printings and the regular salary earned per page are the most consistent ways to get money for most mangaka. If you're not a big hit, you won't see a lot of money outside of these sources.

You sure that's not some sort of cover up? I mean, he did delete his tweets, so it might be damage control.

Reading My Hero Academia today I came to the conclusion that the series would sell more if Mirio was the protagonist. I will not enter in details, for obvious reasons, but I think the majority of people here know what I'm talking about, this week chapter was beyond epic. I will say it here and now: Either this chapters takes first in the TOC or the Japanese readers don't know what they are doing. One Piece was also epic though, so if it is One Piece, it is forgivable.

First GFC entry looks super good. It has a mascot and everything else to become a pillar for Jump. Let's see what the other entrants have in store.

Its the opposite. They viewed Oda as the real thing and someone with huge potential from the beginning and purposefully raised his OK line. Here's his editor Kushima who was with him before he started One Piece:

He purposefully rejected drafts that may have been okayed if it was any other rookie. I miss spoke but Kushima states that there was a trend of promising rookies being cancelled in 10 weeks and his reason for that is that they would have total confidence in themselves since they were told or saw themselves as having promise and would do as they liked and would not listen to their editors and more often created series that were difficult for the readers to immerse themselves or relate with. Due to this, they would be unable to gain popularity and would quickly end. They would then learn from this and would succeed in the next serialization. Oda didn't want to fail the first time around had already decided that he would write a manga about "pirates and magic users and ninja" and the like. Kushima says that Oda was unsure if he could stand up again if his series was cancelled in 10 weeks. So he worked with his editor to make his first series a hit. This is why they raised the hurdle bar for him. During their meetings, it looked like they were fighting because Oda was very stubborn and in his own words "overconfident" and only changed the parts that he felt needed to be changed after the editor listed all the changes that needed to be made. He would not redo any parts of the story he had already decided that he will definitely not change. Kushima says that the parts he did change came out much better than he expected.
Here's another excerpt about the relationship between Oda and Kushima:

Oda himself says that editors go through lots of mangaka's works during the year and those experiences help them develop their own distinct "theories". They would see the many mistakes that many rookies make and would advise newcomers about them so that they would not make the same mistakes.
lol

I was reading the author introduction page in the raw and his favorite manga are: Double Arts and March comes in like a lion

ignoring that there are nothing in common between the 2 (highly successful drama sport manga vs Jump insta canceled battle manga) I'm legitimately surprised he did not say Gash Bell

Bonus: is that a Yamcha reference?

Yes, the red part.

To be easier to translate and see: 尾田くんの場合は、もう本当に小さい時から「海賊」か「魔法使い」か「忍者」で漫画を描くって決めていたので、思い入れがハンパなく強いんですよ。
