What is the ToC ranking?
ToC stands for Table of Contents. It's found on the last page of every issue of WSJ, but more importantly, the order the series appear in on the ToC is closely related to the popularity of the series. This is determined by polling the readers; there is a polling postcard in every issue of WSJ.

Each week, a certain guy from 2ch writes out TOC for the following week's Jump. TOC order is usually based on polling result of readers, thus you will know how your favorite series are doing based on the order.

Some exceptions etc:
- For the 2nd-8th chapters, TOC is already decided, though it could change depends on readers' ranking.
- The TOC is affected by the popularity of 8 chapter ago.
- Shueisha's aiming their main target as elementary and junior high school students, thus, their votes weigh probably more than others (fangirls).

Who tries to justify their own writing on Twitter?

More importantly... shokugekis have been the most predictable/stale writing. I can't believe the manga went downhill this early. I still care about the series since it's one of my personal favs but I can't deny the writter isn't that great. I wonder how well off this series would've been if the writter had to do the art as well.

It also seems it's just a shipping fest for the past year.

The decline is well deserved. Its also beyond me how the abysmal anime is getting these OVA's too.

I'm gonna have some pitchforks raised at me for this, but this is coming from the same writer who decided to put in a tentacle foodgasm in the first chapter for shock value just so he can stand out. And people think he's a good writer? I never saw anything special about his writing, there's nothing about it that makes him particularly talented. In fact, I don't even think he understands the "idea" of cooking and its philosophies. I've seen much better food/cooking docs that are way better than what he's writing. There's also several other cooking mangas that are actually better by a mile.

If he wanted to do a cooking manga, he could've gone either of two ways: do a manga version of cutthroat kitchen (which would've been amusing as all hell to see), or actually watch more food/chef docs for his research. The latter would've improved his writing greatly.

I am curious, which one performs well in WSJ ranking between BNHA and Black Clover? I mean the amount of cover pages, color pages etc, that's if you exclude those last 29 chapters BNHA ahead of Black Clover.

who cares if DP gets axed, my point is that we should stop acting like professional editors and ignorantly pretending to know what series will fail based on some pre rankings when history has shown that they dont mean anything. G_I_A is just gonna look stupid if it doesn't get canceled.

Rankings always mean something, even for series too early to have given any results. If nothing else, they show the position that professional editors, with access to yet unreleased chapters, think a series should have, aka their expectations for how well it will be doing in the magazine.

Of course, they are often wrong and sometimes a rank is based on yet other factors. However, my opinion that DP is dead is not based on the ranking alone, but the fact that I'm unsure if it should even get a higher position (though I do expect that ch1 and/or ch2 to did well in the votes so I won't be surprised if next week the the chapter is higher up... but right now, this might be what editors think with a few early votes and their opinion based on released and yet unreleased chapters... though they might have also put it randomly there XP ).

I'm gonna have some pitchforks raised at me for this, but this is coming from the same writer who decided to put in a tentacle foodgasm in the first chapter for shock value just so he can stand out. And people think he's a good writer? I never saw anything special about his writing, there's nothing about it that makes him particularly talented. In fact, I don't even think he understands the "idea" of cooking and its philosophies. I've seen much better food/cooking docs that are way better than what he's writing. There's also several other cooking mangas that are actually better by a mile.

If he wanted to do a cooking manga, he could've gone either of two ways: do a manga version of cutthroat kitchen (which would've been amusing as all hell to see), or actually watch more food/chef docs for his research. The latter would've improved his writing greatly.

Doesn't the Souma team have an actual chef they consult for the recipes in the series, though?

THAT what people used to say when series like neverland started ( it's not for jump ) but now manga doing great......my point is you will never get what japanese folks like.....

I was going to write a rant about Neverland not being the first dark shonen to find success so people shouldn't say it doesn't fit in Jump

but as I thought about it I remembered childish titles like Bobobo, Inumarudashi, Ninku, Ten Ten, Taizou Mote King Saga... were all in Jump too

so you're right, I shouldn't say Spring Weapon doesn't fit in Jump

Yes, it has Morisaki Yuki as advisor. She is food researcher and TV star, according to MAL. I don't know what people consider a good or a bad cooking manga, but my opinion about Shokugeki no Soma is that it is a very good idea to make a cooking manga where everything the characters make are replicable int he real world. I think Morisaki Yuki does a good job advising the author, otherwise it wouldn't be possible.
I don't have any comments about Tsukuda Yuto abilities as a writer, I don't see anything really bad about his writing and if possible I would like clarification about this part.

@Wolf King it's like that fam. It's why I've been kept up with Soma with one eye open. After watching like 4-5 episodes of the anime I just jumpskipped to the 110s cause of wanting to see Rindo and the Elite 10 (I believe?). Guess japanese people just not feeling the flashbacks the story was going through in 2016. If I had to give a reason why I still follow (barely and not weekly, I'll let chapters rack up and binge) is probably cause of Souma and Erina, nothing ship wise but they're my favorite characters. Like @giathuan2707 said the next arc could mean a bounceback in 2017 for SnS. Author had to see the comments and rankings so I can see the editor influencing the plot to the fans this year. It's funny too, I never mind fanservice, i read a couple ecchis but the foodgasms just be weird to me bruh. Don't know if I should hungry from it or turned on..

I am curious, which one performs well in WSJ ranking between BNHA and Black Clover? I mean the amount of cover pages, color pages etc, that's if you exclude those last 29 chapters BNHA ahead of Black Clover.

BNHA: 7 covers, 11 cp, 2 lead cp (2 cp were before BC started ranking)
BC: 4 covers, 19 cp (excluding 1st-2nd chapter's cover and cp).

Like Leo says, they do have her as a consultant. BTW, you're a fan of Toriko right? While I'm not exactly a fan, I can definitely say Toriko is actually a better cooking manga. It's concept of high-fantasy cooking is most definitely something unique and in that regard, gives it more character as a cooking manga.

Addicted to Curry would like to have a word with you. Also, a major distinction between this and SnS, is the former focuses on one kind of dish, but with many kinds of variations on it, on top of being comfort food. SnS displays various dishes, ranging from haute cuisine and comfort food. And even then, the dishes Soma makes all border on haute cuisine despite most of them being comfort food-based.

So, to argue SnS's recipes being replicable is inaccurate. You'd need a lot of resources and money to make most of the dishes.

From what I've heard, Morisaki Yuki is a "cosplay chef" so she's not an exact definition of a "professional chef" so much as she is more like one of those mass-produced idols/cosplay models.

As for his writing, did you seriously not read about Azami's ambitions??? Shutting down an entire economy of diners just because they don't know haute cuisine, not to mention marginalizing those who couldn't possibly afford to eat at those kinds of restaurants!?!? That is seriously the most nonsensical "diabolical plan" I've ever seen a writer come up with for a villain. Granted, there is a suspension of disbelief required when reading/watching any sort of entertainment medium but even this stretches too far.
