That's why I'm not a fan of Soowon x Lily, because it seems to be just a gag pairing with no real chemistry :(. Lily is a bit immature for him imo, and she does not have his foresight. I don't see her as the ideal partner. Her methods and views are too different. Lily and Soowon will need more character development for this pairing to work.

Tao and Kouren are not great choices either, though I lean more toward Kouren. A relationship between two strong-headed characters like them will be interesting :teehee.
Hehe! Actually because they have really opposite personalities - I feel they will work well together.

In Chapter 126 when Lili was causing up a storm in Ogi's hideout, Soo-Won got super flustered and wasn't able to make her go. We rarely see Soo-Won react like that about someone else, so she is bringing these new sides to him. Also she seems to know how to get what she wants with him, because she said if she isn't allowed to listen to what Ogi has to say, she will tell Joo-Doh that Soo-Won is doing shady things :P. So Soo-Won had to listen. It's refreshing to see another character sway Soo-Won this way and make him do things he wouldn't usually and show expressions of frustration. It makes me feel like Lily could somehow make Soo-Won overcome his reserved nature and trust another human being a bit more with his personal problems. Lili would be perfect because she is super stubborn and somehow understands Soo-Won. So even though she seems immature, she has a good idea of what is going on.

That's fair, about the chemistry. Lily like older men. Soo-Won has no real interest in women. Then again that's what makes it work!

I think any choice for Soo-Won will lack chemistry purely because of the way he is. Taking a queen is more a duty than desire.

Romance is pretty minor in the series too. Apart from Yona+Hak, and Soo-Won having a queen; are there any other relationships worth noting? I mean future pairings. I thought about Tetora and Ki-ja. If there's one dragon I'd like to see romance for it would be Jae-ha. I thought about him and Kouren...

I'm thinking Jae-ha and Ayura. I may be thinking too much into this but Kusanagi might have introduced Lily and her two friends to pair them with the guys who have a thing for Yona, but won't end up with her. A sort of compensation so that they also can have a happy ending. She even went out of her way to make Lily similar to Yona… Lol, maybe one of these days we will see a potential partner for Tae-jun…

What I see here is Lily figuring Soowon's weak point and using it against him. This sort of interaction is exactly what irks me about this pairing lol. She is being stubborn, manipulative and childish, he even called her 'headache', but still goes along with whatever she wants because he can't do anything else. This is not mature relationship. I would have preferred her to convince him to let her stay rather than threaten him. I agree with you about Lily possibly influencing Soo-won to change, that's why I said they need more character development. And time. Preferably before the ship becomes cannon if it ever does.

I see why people would ship them, I just don't like pairings between people that are too different.

Lily x Gun-Tae would have been gold... too bad he is married…

Ah well. I guess it's just difference in perspective.

For me, the usually calm Soo-Won needs someone wild like Lili, even if it she is a little childish at times. Soo-Won needs to lighten up a bit I feel and I think Lili is the one who can do it. As we all know, the usual methods of rationality will not work on Soo-Won, as he is very smart, so it was interesting to see that threatening him worked haha.

Character Development wouldn't hurt though XD.

Btw. translation of chapter 148 is already on tumblr.

I liked Neguro interacting with Su-won, though overall I don't feel like we found out anything new. Well, perhaps just that now Su-won is willing to negotiate with whoever wins the internat conflict in Xing, which I guess is the logical move here (although it renders his previous determination to wage war even odder). Other than that, I don't believe that Kouren is going to die, so the cliffhanger does little to me.

The fighting scenes though... Heck, and here I thought that only Hak got unrealistic skills =.=

Ok, it makes sense that Su-won wants to speak with the person that has control over the situation.

Yes, I hope it is not to make Yona shine by dumbing him down and making him see the light because of her and that either he attempted to establish diplomatic relationship with Xing, but it didn’t work or he investigated the situation thoroughly and based on information received from it come to conclusion that trying to establish diplomatic relationship is pointless.

Well he did get info from Ogi about Xing right? Probably about Kouren, which is why he told Yona that talks wouldn't work.

But probably he wanted to take a more peaceful route himself? Yona herself said she believes he doesn't want the death of so many. And now that a way of negotiations have opened up because of Yona, it makes full sense to at least try and talk to Kouren (or whoever has the upper hand). So his actions make sense right now. Either way Kouka has the upper hand - so least he can do is hear out the other party.

Yeah, but the problem is, we don't know that. We know that Su-won asked Ogi about Xing, and that Ogi didn't know anything. We also saw Ogi later on, trying to obtain info from Vold, which to me suggests that he still didn't pass anything on to Su-won. If Su-won did indeed learn about Kouren and her rigid resolve from Ogi, then it should've been shown on page, or at least mentioned. I dunno, Su-won telling Lili that he'd been at Ogi's and learned a few things. There was actually a golden opportunity for it, when Lili asked Su-won if she could go with him to Ogi again, but the author didn't grab it. So we don't know if Su-won knew about Kouren or not, and overall how much he knows at the moment, apart from the fact that at the beginning he didn't know anything at all - and it bothers me.

There was a similar instance in the Forts Arc - before Su-won's group ventured into Sei, he mentioned something about the Water and Wind soldiers distracting Sei's forces. To me this suggested that their initial plan was to draw Sei's forces (the thousand soldiers, according to Kushibi) away, and then deal with so weakened forts in the smaller group of a dozen/two dozens warriors. But the problem is, we don't know if they went through with it. It was never mentioned again. We saw Su-won's and Hak's groups wreaking havoc upon Sei soldiers, with odds supposedly around 3:100. This makes me laugh bitterly. However, if from the initial 1000 soldiers, 600 or even 800 were occupied elsewhere, then it makes more sense with odds 3:20...

Soo-won's initial determination to war with Xing without even bothering with 'peace talks' does strike me as odd. His information source(s) on Xing are vague. The best we can say is that that Ogi was one of them and even could have been the only one. If he was the only one, that does not win competency points for effectiveness as a ruler. You don't base your entire decision to wage war on one underground information broker from the Kouka capital. Especially considering there were people from Xing actively seeking out Soo-won's ear. This coming from Vold and co. from Tao's faction who sought out 'Kouka's monsters' to spread their word of Tao's intentions to surrender and become vassal to Kouka, thinking they were Soo-won's direct underlings who were 'as good as speaking to Soo-won'. And then when Yona came to the capital so seek audience with Soo-won about Xing, he turns her down, apparently firm on his initial decision on what to do about Xing and refusing to hear more about the situation. It wasn't until Yona directly gets in his face about it does he listen and decide on peaceful negotiations.
It very well could have been the author dumbing down Soo-won to make Yona look good, because his actions does not reflect his competency in the previous arcs. Don't get me wrong. I'd like it if Soo-won wasn't the epitome of perfection as a ruler whose judgement was always sound and could do no wrong, but I'd still like a better execution or explanation on why he behaved to rashly in the beginning for little reason I can think of. This being compared to his calm calculated decisions on previous conflicts.

You are bothered by the unrealistic fighting power of a few individuals both during the Sei arc and this most recent chapter with the 5 Stars. I see it too. The dragons get a pass because they literally have inhuman power, but the Kouka generals and the 5-Stars kicking ass when completely outnumbered is unrealistic. Yes they are their nation's strongest and it would make sense they should kick ass when outnumbered, but how outnumbered does it take to still be believable by human standards? In Sei a, say 5 vs.100 odds is more believable and still impressive than a 5 vs.1000 odds. There's a point where the odds become just silly and you lose your immersion in the story. In recent chapter, the 5 stars were slaughtering foes left and right and swatting away arrows like flies. It'd be more believable if half of them weren't seriously injured; injuries where in real life would be mortal wounds just laying down, not even out there fighting on the fray.

Yeah, now that you mention it, in chapter 148 Yotaka first wishes he could move because he wants to kill Su-won, but he's too weak - then a few pages (and minutes) later he magically gets better and fights alongside Mizari and everybody else, like it's nothing =.=

Could it have been some information from Yu-Hon that made him feel that war was the only option then since the hatred was too strong? Even during Kin province, he was fully determined to get it back because it belonged to Yu-Hon before Il gave it away. Soo-Won is rational for the most part but when it comes to his dad he is a little bit more emotional I feel.

But it is odd that he didn't find out more about Tao and Gobi. Maybe initially he wasn't even bothered since Kouka had the upper hand and would have one anyway? I don't know. Perhaps calculating all the options - war seemed to be the most efficient - since there could have been internal conflicts within Xing later.

Right now though it would make sense to at least talk to Xing. It could very well not work out and war could still break out.

Update: Did you guys read 134.6? It's so cute! Especially Kusa's afterword. :D

It was said that it belonged to Yu-Hon before Il gave it away, but Su-won explains in chapter 94 that he wants to strengthen borders. Besides, Sai started it by attacking the Water tribe, so it is not like Su-won was purely driven by emotions that the land once belonged to his dad.

Yes, I would not want Su-won to be perfect as well, but there should be some good explanation as to way his judgement was wrong. Preferably something much better than ‘I didn’t think about a basic political move, because it was Yona's time to shine.’

It is pathetic when the main character needs a string of lucky coincidences and dumbing down of another character to shine.

Sure. I didn't say that he was purely emotional about Kin province. Just more emotional when it comes to his dad overall. Also his latest reaction about why what Yona said about Yu-Hon. It could be that Yu-Hon said something about Xing - or perhaps Soo-Won knows something more about the dumping of the heads?

Also I don't understand how this is Soo-Won dumbing down?

It is possible he never thought peace is a good option and war is the most efficient like I pointed out earlier. Soo-Won is no saint, and has no qualms about lives being lost in war, and perhaps war would have been the best way to achieve his goals in the shortest amount of time rather than spend time on creating diplomatic relations with Kouren. For him strengthening Kouka in the shortest time is important against invasion from Kai, not saving lives of both the countries. In this case if Yona somehow managed to make him realize that there is a way without killing so many lives, why should it be pathetic? Soo-Won can go wrong too.

In this case it's not that he was dumbed down but rather he thought that the violent route is the faster one and faster to protect against Kai.

I haven't read the spoilers, but I get the idea of "dumbing down" Soo-Won so that Yona can get spotlight. Essentially Soo-Won's greatest asset is that he can plan and think ahead of anyone. If he makes a mistake here just so Yona can be given the chance to sort things out between the nations, it'd be a letdown and feel rather forced. Especially if the likes of Gobi can actually mess with Soo-Won in this sense.

One thing that was mentioned a while ago here of a possible 'return to Sei' arc before the Kai arc. I was trying to remember what actually happened with Nadai. IIRC Ogi said the merchants have disappeared. So if the quarrel with Xing lasts for a while, I'd expect Nadai to resurface once more.

But, if he decided that it was a good idea without knowing the situation and properly investigating it, then how would he know that war is the best option? It would be terrible planning and it is often a recipe for a failure. It doesn’t look good, since he was shown investigating the situation and planning in previous arcs.

However, never mind, I just recalled that Min-soo said that Su-won knows about Kouren’s hatred and that she wants war, so maybe he does have another source of information other than Ogi?

I think that after Yona's thoughtless ploys in the Fire tribe to gain time and her throwing the political bomb by revealing who she is, the next arc should address what is going on to happen with the Fire tribe, Kai and if a split in the Kouka kingdom appears and what Su-won will do now that he cannot pretend anymore that Yona is dead. However, I suppose nadai can return as well, not to make things too easy for our characters.

Yes this needs to be addressed and would have to be soon too (likely straight after Xing).

With the Fire Tribe having great reverence for the legend of King Hiryuu and the dragons, I guess this could tie in right now rather easily (Soo-Wom acknowledging Yona's existence officially).

Why can't we have both? Personally I hope that nadai will resurface during the possible Yona vs Su-won showdown, and that neither party will be able to properly address it, because they'll be preoccupied with resolving the conflict of power (god/legend vs human). I also hope that nadai will resurface not in Sei, but in the Wind Tribe, since I think it was mentioned somewhere that the drug reached even there, and Mundok was worried? Unless I'm now remembering things that didn't happen... O_o

Yeah this is the little reason I can think of to explain Soo-won's earlier actions. He may be letting his emotions cloud his judgement on this one. Just a little anyway.
However, never mind, I just recalled that Min-soo said that Su-won knows about Kouren’s hatred and that she wants war, so maybe he does have another source of information other than Ogi?
This would also explain it a little. If Soo-won knew how much Kouren, the next in line, loathed Kouka, then he would know it was because of his father's excessively brutal massacre in Xing 17 years ago. He may have quickly decided on war thinking talking with Kouren is a lost cause because of her deep hatred. Soo-won may be unconsciously jumping to rash decisions instead of calm calculation, because he knows if he has to think about Kouka's relation with Xing, he would have to contemplate what his father did in detail. He may not want to question those moral and political decisions as to not tarnish the boyish, hero-image he may have had of his father. And when Yona confronts him later about it he may have woken a little and realized what he was doing. Only then does he give in and decide to consider Yona's proposal on peaceful negotiations.
I also think Soo-won may be getting a rise out of Yona always sticking her nose in his politics. When she and Hak come to seek audience, he turns her down. One reason explained above, and another because this was right after hearing rumors of Yona's growing influence and witnessing it first hand in the previous arcs. This was not long after the Sei mess, and there she is again. This time at his doorstep, one step ahead of him on the current issue at hand like always. First Awa, then the Fire Tribe mutiny, the Iza seeds, the Nadai incident, then Sei. She always seems to to be in it before him, sometimes even solving the issue completely. I think one side of him appreciates her work as a childhood friend, but another may be slightly annoyed. Kye-shuk whispering in his ear about it probably doesn't help. That's just my take anyway.
I think Soo-won above all else want to stay rational and not let emotions cloud his judgement on what's best for his country. So if he sees the negative consequences of his father's brutality and the rational political proposals of Yona, despite all reservations, he will try his best to adhere to rational thinking. He will try his best, but let's see how far he can go.

I did a while back on a tumblr translation so it was nothing new to me really. But chapters with the HHB just interacting with each other always warm my heart. We always learn interesting new tidbits about the characters despite the 'filler' vibe you might get from these chapters.
I think it's cute how the Hakuryuu villagers might be covertly stalking their beloved Lord Hakuryuu.

I'd like this to happen. Of course it all has to do with the selfish part of me not wanting this manga to end anytime soon. Due to the limited world building, it may be that conflict with Kai is the final arc of the manga. Unless Kusanagi thinks of other creative arcs without it feeling forced or shoehorned in.

I think we can. There was something about great darkness in the prophesy, so maybe it means a lot of troubles to deal with for the main characters.

I would rather prefer that he had another source of information and was double checking things with Ogi, especially since his judgment was not so clouded when he wanted to take back Kin province.

Besides, I hope that this whole incident with Yu-hon will get more background and it is not just there to give Kouren and co. a sob story. When Yona asked Su-won about it, he told her he agrees with such methods depending on the circumstances, about which she didn’t enquire what he means by it and just jumped to a naive conclusion that it must be because of it that Yu-hon didn’t become the King.

I mean until we don’t hear the other side, there is no telling what really happened. For all we know a bunch of soldiers from Xing who were bitter about their defeat might have attacked Yu-hon’s army camp first after which he decided not to keep his end of the deal as well.

As for Yona being first and before Su-won in certain situation. She can roam freely and has no responsibilities to attend to while he has administration of the whole country on his head. I think it is understandable that he is not everywhere before Yona in these circumstances.

I'd like it if we did hear about something reasonable from Yu-hon's side to explain the incident. It would make the plot more interesting. Well Yu-hon may have had a more justifiable reason to kill so many people from Xing, but in my opinion nothing can justify the level of brutality and macabre display of the severed heads. In just recent chapter (ch148), we get a picture of some expertly fashioned hanging-head bouquets. Yu-hon must have been wanting to bring out his inner artist. How nice that he had the opportunity to express his creativeness during his campaign in Xing.

Yeah it's obvious why Yona was able to get there before him, but it's kind of beside the point.

Lmao at that Yu-Hon comment!

There could have been a retaliation over something Xing did but beheading people and making bouquets out of it IS a bit much.

This chapter is up on Batato now! http://bato.to/reader#abce92aec9233116_1

I honestly really liked Tae-Woo in this chapter. No matter what, the Wind Tribe is grounded well in good principals. This is probably why they had no major problems like Water and Fire tribe. Hak and Mundeok raised the tribe well. They do have a free spirited wild nature, but this is part of their charm. Plus they care for each other so much. It's quite touching.

Also Soo-Won doesn't seem like someone who has dumbed down, just someone who wants to get all this over with so that he can make a decision about war or peace and get on with his plans for Kai.
