Here's the 2017 average TOC placement for Jump SQ. Although it may be it bit more jarring to view a monthly magazine than a weekly one (since weekly can spread out unusual spikes/drops more easily), but I thought it'd still be interesting to see. Perfect attendance for all 12 issues goes to Houkago, Salaryman, Sousei, Chihaya, Masuda, Platinum, Moriarty, and Kemeno. The most color pages goes to both Moriarty and Kemeno with 5 each. Most of the cancellations came from non-action series (such as Happy Milly and Taishou), and there are a substantial number of new series that began this year. This signals that Jump SQ really wanted to try shaking things up and bringing in some new blood into the TOC. It'll be interesting to see how each of these series does, as well as how the old ones hold up. All I actively follow from here is Chihaya, so I can't make any super-accurate guesses about most of the series, but it is apparent that they want a couple of these new series to stick and thrive.

FYI, the "unranked period" is definitely way less than 8 chapters for monthlies. Probably closer to 2 or 3. Also, Taisho is a natural finish.

Thanks for the input! I'll keep that in mind for the 2018 Excel spreadsheet. I just kept it at pre-rank for first 7 issues since it had seemed like many of the series here had already been around for a while. It became much more apparent when I worked on Bessatsu Shonen Magazine that using the first 7 chapters was probably 2 much (had a lot of early cancellations there). How many chapters are usually included in a volume of a monthly series? I may just begin counting at issue 4 (pre-rank for the first 3 issues it appears in).

That's also good to hear about Taishou. I've seen that it's almost completely translated, so I was thinking about reading through it once it was completely translated. Glad to hear it didn't have a rushed/axed ending.

I was hoping Yabuki would do something else. It's always a shame when a talented mangaka is stuck adapting a work like Murata on OPM. Maybe someday we will get Black Cat Darkness.....

No, doesn't seem like Gunchi Kiri has a twitter or any other kind of blog. Except for the magazine ToC comments. Comic Natalie did an interview with him too. But that's about it.

Except Murata Yuusuke has been only the artist for every notable work he has ever done.

I'm liking the artstyle for this one. I'm looking forward to seeing the full chapter, seems like an interesting setting so far (and this is coming from a guy who reads 90+% comedy/romance/SOL stuff lol).

Demon Tune actually seems pretty interesting. You don't usually see little pixie sprites in prominent roles in manga, or at least I haven't in any fantasy stuff I've seen. Hopefully someone will translate this one day

Totally forgot that Demon Tune is done by the mangaka of Blood Lad :P
A nice start though. It's all serious and none of the comedic elements of Blood Lad, but similar atmosphere (albeit darker) and world building.

Also, glad to see Majo no Kaigashu doing well.

Great to see Kemono and Moriarty getting reprints for their first volumes. Seriously, translations when for Kemono, I miss reading it.

I'll tell you about another interesting series, "Kemono Jihen". Look for it." This is apparently a message from Norman that Emma is passing on.
