I really wonder if Death Note debuted now, will it have been as received the same as it was back in the day?

Not sure I follow, plenty of other darker material have been covered in Jump.
I dunno how to explain my pov any better without repeating myself
what are the odds someone will be killed by a demon irl vs the odds of something horrible happening in sex service industry irl?

I really don't wanna read that level of depressing shit in my Chinese cartoons and I doubt I'm alone

I remember Neuro being a really dark manga and many others as well
murder mystery stories are about challenging the readers and if they can solve the mystery before the author reveal it

the crimes are just there as plot devices, so the gore doesn't bother me as much

It will probably devour TPN and take all of its award that TPN got until now.

Jk aside, i think these types of questions aren't good because there are so many angle to look at.

First, Death Note debuted in 2003 and ended in 2006, there were so many good series (tough competition) at this time but Death Note beat them all in quality and sales.
Without Death Note there would be no Bakuman, another hit.

--------------------
Neuro is about detective and i don't think it should be classified as dark manga.

It is kind of unfair to have an anime right off the bat, I think it was more than expected such sales and the original work is not from him so the story may not be as bad as TLR despite being probably more spicy than the original anime.

In one of the author comments from Boichi dude said something on the lines like "it's a joy to draw Inagaki-sensei's script!". What I get from that is even if the artist doesn't form out the plot it's hard to imagine that Nishigori guy or whoever writes the script doesn't show it to Yabuki and exchange dialogue on it. It's "spicy" (funny adjective to describe it lol) from Yabuki's influence or at least I'd imagine. Anyone who has watched will point to the most obvious thing: legit having female characters in doggy style moaning when the male rider "toggles" them to activate their franxx. The innuendo is so hilariously smoothed in it's actually amusing to watch.

You were talking about series with dark elements, and I was thinking that if Death Note were serialized in a monthly or seinen magazine, the story would perhaps be more focused on horror. I mean, the one-shot was. But in the weekly format that doesn't work. The same with Neverland. Unfortunately, the plot development overshadows the atmosphere.

Neuro, on the other hand, tried too hard to be dark, ended up just being silly.

I always felt that was sort of the point. In the hands of another author Neuro would have been problematic but as it was it was just really silly.

For gags I like it, but in serious moments, it doesn't work for me. Anyway, do you guys think Matsui will return to WSJ?

I think he might transfer to monthly now. No way he will be able to replicate the success of AssClass so he might as well take it easy.

Who says he won't be fine with his new manga being as successful as Neuro for example?

Still, for an artist with 2 successes in his belt, and one of those being insanely massive, he'd have to be pretty hardcore to return to a weekly mag (though I realise people do do it). I'd imagine the appeal of a monthly serialisation would be hard ignore.

His art will still look bad though.
I'm not a fan of his writing, and yeah in terms of art he's technically weak, but I have to admit that the guy is creative and knows how to use that in favor of singular premises and illustrations.

Yeah he's admitted himself that his art isn't very good but the way he make downright twisted expressions and designs is worth a merit and yeah the premises for his works are always interesting even if they never do come to full fruition.

Mitsuki Nagata one of my bois, and the newbie that wrote Dondohare

https://myanimelist.net/manga/104176/Dondohare

which was a pretty cool battle oneshot is starting a new series on Jump Plus, unfortunately he's only drawing it and not writing it

they say it will be a Sci Fi and Fantasy series so this isn't as of horrible of a situation as my boi Ono doing a sport manga

I found the pilot that inspired the series

I see why they teamed the writer with an artist, wow
