Always lowkey wondered what Naruto and Bleach did that OP didn't that caused those two to blow up over OP in the US.
Those three are truly special cases and exceptions. OP taking off less might have a connection to the censored shitty version in which OP was originally brought over by 4Kids. There are probably other variables that came into this, but for example in other countries like France, OP is king and OP sells hundreds of thousands to millions of copies each year and France has the second biggest manga market behind Japan in the West.

Op is blowing up now tho. Many were turned away from the art style. But I expect it to overtake naruto and DBZ outside Japan as well by the time it ends.

People have seen the light finally and the desperation settled in for Naruto and Bleach fans since they were so used to having their weekly dose of something, but didn't care enough about manga to dive into different things and they decided to cling to the easy option after their precious manga finished. A good decision, since OP is amazing and because it will continue for a while, they'll grow to learn true greatness xD.

Various factors of it having a "false start" with westerners but I always feel that it was mainly to do with the fact that it look fairly childish in comparison to what was being released at the time. Its been stated quite often that Naruto's ad Bleach's appeal came from the fact that they were both Japanese in feel while OP took more influence from the West being about pirates and taking artistic ques from Vicky The Viking and Yellow Submarine. I say this because as much of a shit job 4Kids did with OP I don't think it would have hit big if it went to Funimation from the start as shitty as a company 4Kids were they were well known for making big hits out of Japanese properties despite the shitty edits and changes (Pokemon,Yu Gi Oh, etc.) so the West were probably not interested in the aesthetics despite coming off the current wave of pirates being cool again thanks to the Pirates of Caribbean movie being a huge hit a year prior and the anime boom releasing a plethora or more "cooler" looking titles. Though Bleach fell off rather hard towards the end while One Piece remained consistent and establish a rather hearty fanbase that stuck by it so it all worked out in the end.

Ninjas and swords feel more Japanese and are therefore cooler, probably.

Btw, I remembered now a guy from twitter who, in the middle of 2015, said that the chances of OPM and MHA blow up in the West were tiny because the audience here was already tired of superhero stories. The odds are higher with Mob Psycho, he said.

It's not like they were traditional super hero stories. I'm sure if it was a generic super hero comic: manga version it wouldn't have done as well.

And they both happened to get fantastic adaptations, that always helps.

I'm highly skeptical of that view. Hollywood are still pumping out superhero movies left and right, so there's clearly a market still avaible for that genre.

^This. What allows MHA and OPM not to drown in the midst of all these superhero stories is the fact they are distinctly Japanese in flavor.

>samurais everywhere in the namu
>not action

for what purpose?

neither KK nor Sahara were published in WSJ, so they were able to get away with things they normally wouldn't
like I can't imagine that prostitute beating scene from KK happening in WSJ

it's typical Jump stuff
Zippo takes place in a utopian future where the police uses robots to defend the population, the protagonist dreams of being one of these cops because a cop saved him when he was little
when he joins the force people think he's a weak nerd but he surprises everyone when he takes out the bad guys

raw
Even though TPN first chapter had a little child dying and Kimetsu no Yaiba being what it is? Doubt it matters lol

Bleach with this update is in the top 10 best-selling manga in history.

One piece : 430 million ( 1th and 1th shonen jump )
Dragon Ball : 240 million ( 2th and 2th shonen jump )
Naruto : 220 million ( 3th and 3 th shonen jump )

Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo : 157 million ( 6th and 4th shonen jump )
Slam dunk : 121 million ( 9th and 5th shonen jump )
Bleach : 120 million ( 10th and 6th shonen jump )
Also, it just hit me but I guess this really puts into perspective of how big the "Big 3" truly were at least from a commercial and sales view for WSJ.

Interestingly enough, it kind of ended up being a double edged sword.

Yep it is and I hope so, especially DBZ. I hate the dragon ball franchise now with Super.

Thanks for the link, that was quite an interesting, if/when Shibata does a new serialization, he properly polished his idea so that it wont end up getting the axe

that just my opinion but I think the 2 situations are different

not important characters getting killed by demons in a fantasy world is one thing, a prostitute getting abused by her pimp and leaving her with a bloody face is another

that shit is way too real for a magazine that suppose to provide escapism for adolescents

remember the hand seal battles on the school yard?

remember running like a ninja in gym class because "it made you faster"?

remember all Sasuke's Linkin Park AMVs on youtube?

...what? I'm the only when that remember that?

a...a...I didn't do it either, I only remember it because it was so lame, ha ha...amirite guys?

Not sure I follow, plenty of other darker material have been covered in Jump.

Aside from the Big 3, if you throw in Hunter x Hunter (1998) and Gintama (2003) into the picture, you'd see just how big those 6-7 years were for WSJ.

Sigh. Stop. Not about Linkin Park. I'm still recovering from Chester's death. I come here to get away from that.
