Hello and welcome to the biweekly art contest. It's time for theAvatar & Signature Set Category and the theme is Rivalry. Your task is to create both pieces, an Avatar and a Signature, that represent any form of rivalry.

What do I need to know before submission?
  • All members are welcome to join the contest. There is no minimum post or user status you need to have to participate.
  • Entries for the contest must be posted in this thread.
  • Each participant can only submit ONE ENTRY and it should be a new piece. So don’t try to be smart and enter a piece used in past contests.
  • Use MangaHelpers’ HERE to upload your entries. Any problem with uploading, let us know.
  • Submissions not following the weeks theme will result in disqualification. If you have any question about the contest, you can ask it here.
  • You must credit the artist of the stock images you’re using (see example below). This goes from renders to brushes and textures. If it’s all original art, write so in the credits.
  • Forum Rules are applied unless stated otherwise. That means your signature must not exceed 600 x 200px and 500KB. For avatars, the maximum size is 150 x 300px and 100KB.
  • No excessive, suggestive, spoiler, or porn-related imagery in the contest.
  • No plagiarizing is allowed.
  • Submission is open until 03/11, at 23:00 (GMT)

How do I upload and submit my entry?
  1. Go HERE.
  2. Click the "Upload Image" button.
  3. After upload is completed, you'll be shown your uploaded image with an edit box for commentary/additional information. After adding necessary information you wish, click "Save Media" and you'll be brought to the sharing media page.
  4. Choose the "Share BB Code" and post within this thread; choosing this will save you having to select any additional codes you want to post here.
  5. For more information on how to use the media gallery and uploading, go HERE.

I only added some small Edits and Effects to the Pictures and adjusted their Sizes properly,nothing ground breaking probably but it's fitting for the Theme regardless.

I picked the incredible Rivalry between Guts and Griffith which in all honesty is most likely one of the best in Manga there is for me.
Both couldn't be more different from each other in their Goals and the lengths they are willing to go for them,and yet both have the same "Dream" so to say just in vastly different Dimensions compared to the other. Furthermore there isn't any Rivalry of which i'm anticipating the ending of more then this one right here.

Avatar: Unfortunately, I have no idea who the artist of this masterpiece is. I can only provide the following link where it was posted: Source. This amazing piece of art was done by 通草. Thanks to @Purity of Magi for providing the artist.

Signature: All three panels are from the original manga series Yakusoku no Neverland, Chapter #37. Story by Kaiu Shirai (MyAnimeList entry / YnN Wiki entry), Art by Posuka Demizu (Website / pixiv).

Miscellaneous: Cropping, borders and resizing done by me with Gimp 2.8.18. Gif and gif effects done by me with the ezgif online tool.

My comment is that I don't have a comment. I did this only and only for Erinyes-chan. It's a one time thing, I won't hear of any Art Contest ever again, Erinyes!



Guess I will leave a one-liner about the set: Just wanted to portray how things developed between Isabella and Ray over time. For anyone who doesn't get it -> go read this epic of a series.

Basically a cut-and-paste-together job with some redrawing.

Scott Pilgrim has seven rivals (Ramonas evil exes), but Gideon is obviously the nemesis of the bunch. Anyone who hasn't read this comic, do so. The film is good, but the comic is amazing.

Avatar edit was made adding an effect via Lunapic to the original image.
Signature was just a combination of the previous three linked images.

Was going to do Kagura and Kamui, but decided to do Gintoki and Takasugi instead.
Avatar depicts the bad blood left between two close friends(seen via the sig). Basically depicting the evolution of their friendship. Added their master in the sig, faded his image out as a form of symbolism. Looks kinda funky, maybe should've left him out:XD.

Every hero needs a rival to reach new heights. I went for the classics, in Dragonball this is very literal, which you can see hinted in the text of the signature. The texts are supposed to be "Hero" and "Rivalry" but since I don't speak japanese, I still need to proof check those from someone who does. So they are still subject to change.

Went for a clean simplistic look.

EDIT: Thanks for @zimbardo and his wife for proof reading. Apparently the old text in the signature was something rather funny. Now it translates to rival in the sense of "old enemy".

When I see rivalry in the title, I think about this one from Pokemon. Out of all the rivals Ash has throughout his journey, Paul is easily the best. From their first encounters to their final battle in the Sinnoh league, they battle not because they want to beat the other, but also to instill their different ideas on how to raise Pokemon properly.

While Ash is a trainer that raises his Pokemon with high training and friendship bonds, Paul is very strict and trains his Pokemon by their strong abilities and power. Not keeping up with his expectations and the Pokemon will get released.

I highly recommend watching even one of their battles. Their rivalry, plus the arc of Chimchar, is one the reasons why DP is one of the best seasons of Pokemon \o/

From the beginning of the story it doesn't seem like Gon/Hisoka has a rivarly kind of relationship, maybe a pedo villain who will eventually be defeated. However, as the story progressed, we see that Hisoka helps Gon grow for the his future enjoyment. And I thought maybe that's all there is to it. Enemy helps MC grow to be eventually be defeated. And it seems I was wrong again. Hisoka gets even stronger during the series. Just like Gon, the author also focus a lot on Hisoka (his power in depth, personality etc). Both seems to grow during the series, but Hisoka had a head start.

First wanted to do Gon/Killua, but realised that Killua never saw Gon as a rival (since he was/is OP) but as a friend.

Roger and Rafa have the most major titles of any player, meeting 9 times in slam finals. And right now they are still on top of the world in their 30's!

Chose the pics on the surfaces they've dominated, and I tried to make the pics vintage looking coz they're old (supposedly)

Madara vs Hashirama in my opinion was the best rivalry in the Naruto manga. These two were almost evenly matched in power. Born to clans that hated each other, they started as friends, defied their families and ultimately founded the hidden leaf village together. But despite their best efforts they could not escape a destiny that determined they be rivals, and in the end they faced each other on opposite sides of the battlefield. This rivalry would transcend even death. One thing they never lost however, was the respect and admiration they had for each other.
