well, better late than never

I'll never understand the "I will only read manga from Jump" mindset

even shueisha employees read other magazines

it's like playing sport with a handicap, when you're completely healthy
Trust me. Magazine and Sunday got me through Jumps creatively bankrupt period during the 00s but they have very little to offer now until Silver Spoon comes back once in a blue moon. I always seem to fall out of Sunday titles despite the fact that they usually start out strong (Kenichi, ZKC, Hayate, etc.) and most of Magazine's line up is trash so its hard to really get invested in them. Jump is in a boring state now so all we can do in these threads is shitpost.

You can ask in their threads and you'll get a good list of stuff. Beastars (from Champion) is the one that beat out Neverland to some awards recently.
Beat it only in one award (Taisho) if i remember correctly, but yeah Beastars is a great series.

Do we know the colors for next week? If Act-Age gets a color page, it's already safe for the next culling.

I'd say Sunday and Magazine have very solid lineups right now and the same goes for Jump. In Champion not much gets translated, but whatever does has a lot of charm and heart. I'd say you're gonna miss out on some great stuff if you only stick with Jump.

Can we have translations now?

I wouldn't go that far but I can understand that view. I think I follow as many Sunday series as Jump now but Sunday has a severe lack of promotion problem, despite, personally, its stories being as good as or even better than Jump. But this is off topic.....
I think Sunday and Magazine have more interesting titles than Jump now at the moment but outside say Matashitemo and SDS I'm not really as invested in them as I'm in Jump. Its definitely the lack of promotion thats not making the titles stick as they should.

I wouldn't stick to Jump only either, even though these are what get translated the most, though even that's not true anymore. MS translates some niche series. I don't see why they couldn't translate Kimetsu and get it out to that audience but I don't know what that group is thinking. I'm sure personal preferences play a part though. Magazine also has series, like Tokyo revengers, which are better than the current flagship Taizai, yet they also don't get translated.
Kimetsu is just not for everyone, the beginning is a drag and its art is unappealing, you really just have to get battle shounen to appreciate what the author does with it which is something a lot of people can't invest into.

well, I don't recommend reading Sunday or any magazine exclusively, or reading the entire magazine line up, just simply look for a title that interest you and read it

although I agree about Jump current state, it have been boring as hell
however I don't think it a matter of creative bankruptcy as much as it's a matter of a lot of bad choices back to back

bad choices on which authors they let in the magazine
bad choices on what oneshots they should serialize
bad choices on what series should they push

you really question the competence of the EiC

Well, maybe you find the begging to be a drag and the art unappealing, but don't present those as facts. I don't think the beginning is a drag and I love the art. But as you said, it's not for everyone.

Well that's because you're a weirdo.:mono
Normal people won't understand its appeal like you and me but its not a series that screams mainstream appeal hence its popularity on 5ch. I fully acknowledge that the beginning of Kimetsu was weak and if people get put off by it I won't judge them but its definitely worth the investment.

Who says that I'm the weirdo? What if the other ones are the weirdos and I'm the "normal" person. :mono

oh noey what have you done :ck
Akage no Achoo was one of the most well received oneshot online in I've seen in recent years, it was praised for its interesting setting and impact art

who's brilliant idea was it to make its author draw a ping pong manga with a cheap red haired Hinata and haiyuu rejects characters?

yes, I'm still mad

The problem with reading manga from other magazines outside of Jump, or even the main trio, is that often times manga will just get dropped, or get translated once in a blue moon. Trust me, as someone who reads most of my manga from an app, I come across a lot of them that I'll binge read 10s of chapters only to find out it hasn't been updated in over a year. It's got to the point where I have to check if it's even been updated in the last couple of months to decide if I should read and get invested in it or not.

lets try steering this ship to a different (not actually better) direction

I may not understand how all the debacle unfold in Japan.. but isn't it a bit too early, Jump?

There definitely is a sense of staleness in Jump right now... Maybe they should just stick to the 6 new manga serialization rounds on a yearly basis? WSJ definitely made some very questionable choices for some of the things they've serialized after the fantastic six made their debut. I really wonder if they have something special that's slowly being prepared... Or maybe Jump is just too intimidating for newer talents.

The translation issue has definitely gotten better for the other magazines. Sure it, isn't perfect, but a sizable amount of things have consistent reliable translations and releases.

I dont think that measure is a realistic tool as that 37.5% (300/800 = ~ 37.5%) of circulation sales implies everything in jump needs to reach 675K sales to be regarded as a success. That is already an amount that according to 2017 overall year data, only the top 29 manga volumes in JPN reached that number, so using that cut off, youre basically calling every manga in jpn as selling below average or Much Below Average. Only One Piece, Haikyuu, and HeroAca from jump had volumes over 675K.

The circulation also assumes every store that gets shipped the copies is selling the copies, the copies are being read, and people reading them are reading every single manga in the magazine each week. It is unclear or unknow if people dont just get a copy, read their one or two series and pass it on (put it on the shelf) or whatever else can be done. So I dont think measuring success by portion of magazine sales is a realistic, viable, or sensible tool.
But using the magazine's circulation is indeed a valuable factor into measuring a success as it signifies the magazines reach. If 1.8 million consume the magazine, it means there is every opportunity for every series to sell 1.8 million. Obviously, for a series to sell that amount is ridiculously unrealistic. But if a series can reach half that number, I'd call it a huge success. I've not once in my statement said BC was not a success. I've merely stated it's success is average at best. (Considering its from WSJ)

Lets change the type of business. Think of it this way. If there was a small gaming company which had very little reach behind the release of one of it's games and that game managed to sell 1 million copies and on the opposite end there was a huge multi billion dollar company whose game also sold 1 million, which would you call a bigger success? Fewer investments, money, time and effort was spent on the former and the return was larger than what the latter company would have received. Heck, lets use actual examples for games. Why did EA consider Star Wars Battlefront 2 sales a disappointment despite selling 8-9 million copies within the first month? If a smaller company had a game that sold 8-9 million in its lifetime, that game would be held at a very different perspective as well.
It's the same logic here.

For a magazine who's circulation, aka how far it's reach can go, is low but gets a 300k selling series, that's a big win for that magazine. You however cannot say the same thing if that manga sold the same in WSJ. Again, in no way is that a failure. It's just average numbers tho at best.

I don't know about competence but if you look at the new series serialized after August 2017, around the time he took the EiC position, its not really an exciting list:

Lycopene- cancelled
Full Drive- cancelled
Golem Hearts- cancelled
Bozebeats- cancelled
Act-age
Jujutsu
Noah's notes
Ziga
Kisetsu
Invade You
Other series that ended after he entered:
Marie
Cross Account
EDIT: Shudan
Just from this list, I personally find almost nothing that holds my interest. Act-age seemed interesting but I'm not a huge fan of the premise. Jump Rising is personally a mess. Jujutsu was probably the only thing that seemed good to me and even then it needs quite some work. Ziga seems like it doesn't know what it wants to do. The latest 2 don't appeal to me at all.
