Mag Talk Weekly Shonen Jump [2018] - Discussion and TOC Talk

Did not like David much but I enjoyed Japan a lot.

David's gag premise already feels old despite it being 1 short chapter, I know they want a new crude manga with Gintama gone but the main gimmick outside of the pee jokes (being classic sculptures) strikes me as something that's only funny once and probably should've stayed a oneshot.

I'm From Japan however has a ton of flexibility, putting prefectures into fighting styles is great and means fans can get excited to see what their prefecture powers are and such. I hope it does well, I'd like to see what ideas it can come up with as it goes on.

I don't think viz will keep either of them though. Gag manga aren't really their thing.

Jujutsu is really building up great momentum. But the biggest surprise is Heroaca. Its been getting reprints almost on a monthly basis now. This one includes Volume 20 which was released 2 weeks ago.

In the show:
-There are 18 people in the Shonen Jump edition.


-The results of the surveys are due on Wednesday.
-We saw (but without the sound) the meeting for the announcement of the two new gag series and we also learn that 3 end of series were announced (so logically Gintama, Alice & Tanaka).
-We see the editor of Hunter x Hunter with the chapter that will be present in #43. According to him it is a Dantean chapter (神回).
-Jimoto's author is a man.

It was sad for me to see Saitou is still a regular editor and didn't advance at all, editor of Kuroko and We Never Learn, 14 years and still not a leader.
Not sure how much of you know, Saitou face used as Akira Hattori design in Bakuman, but the real Hattori back then was the editor of One Piece.
Well, at least he participate in the big discussions.

I saw MHA past episode was trending, these upcoming climax episodes I've been waiting on. This line has been my mood all weekend:

If I were Jump,I'd censor the faces of the editors like a Japanese porno. They should be ashamed of themselves. Jump no longer feels like a competitive magazine anymore. The warning signs have been there. We've seen GFC winners not have the concept serialized, or extensively delayed. They do not even attempt to serialize battle manga or spokon any more. Alice no Taiyou, Invade you, Momiji, junk from Giga and Taka na ja not going to be serialized anymore really calls into question the judgement of the editorial staff. What is going on!? How do you see Jump rectifying this issue?

Also, editor Saitou does not have a leadership position because he shouldn't even be managing a Walmart or a daycare center. It's absolutely disgraceful how he treated Fujimaki of The Basketball Which Kuroko Plays fame.

Why do they need to put in more battle manga? Isn't Jujutsu a battle manga anyway? Also everyone pins the blame on the editorial staff but what if they just aren't getting good things submitted? It's not like any other magazines currently are full of top tier series which I'd imagine would be the case if Jump was turning away top talent. Magazine is probably the best off but I think most their current series are from Kodansha regulars or from Shogakukan. Champion seems to be gaining some top series but I don't think stuff like Beastars would work in Jump.

People want entertaining series, battle manga usually fills that role but the landscape in 2018 is different than in 2008. Barely any long runners now, everything is seasonal. I understand the concept of diversity and how it’s better for all people involved, politically it’s a good move but commercially maybe not. I follow dramas and other genres occasionally too. I just want to understand the purpose of adding a series based on a “salary man turned author”. Like imagine buying Jump to read a salary man turned author manga. With act age at least japs on 5ch were like “it’s cool but not really Jump-like so it might not work out”. They need to seralize Apollo and give it time like act age.

The BC game seems fun, but it is a shame that the PC player base is already dead. Bamco really dropped the ball on this one with the lack of advertising. Curious to see how it performs in Japan.
