The question that everyone wants to hear. Because the Robot x Laserbeam of the has been canceled and Dr. Stone is not ?! If the two of them sold almost the same thing.

I'm not saying that Dr. Stone should be canceled, they both had a point on that Jump. RxL would be the sport manga that Jump wanted so much and that currently is scarce, to make success, with the anime that could explode in sales, but Mama Jump decided to cut it from the magazine, unfairly.

Now it's there with two more sports failing, one after another ... 😪😴
I think that if the jump was so desperate to have a new sport manga they would not have canceled RxL, even with the criticism.
If he had won an anime at that time things would be different today.

Is this the Shonen Jump popularity poll Top-10 with more women ever? (Not counting the romcoms for obvious reasons).

Based Tabata showing he knows how to write women. He's along the best in that sense.

I think I got the gist of most of it using google translate.

Nakano was asked about YouTube, Rain Spectre, but I don't think he really answered the question lol.

Basically, from what I understand, Nakano just sees YouTube as the No 1 competitor to Jump. This is kind of I imagine the reason why Jump series have indirectly become darker, the younger readers are less prevalent now and thus it's the high-school and collage age readers who are the main audience.

Yup. Mentioned it some pages back.

Don't know whether it was just bad timing, or it's an attempt to salvage things.

TSS still feels like Ne0lation but with superpowers to me.

It's doing that typical flop thing of starting on a sequence of one-off throwaway villains that are only around so it can show off what MC can do. Going by typical progression, it'll probably finally start an arc that actually matters at ch 13-14 but by then it'll be too late. The successful stuff nowadays jump right into something important ch 2 or 3:

MHA started Deku training on ch 2
Black Clover went into the squads entrance exam on ch 2
Kimetsu no Yaiba started Tanjirou training on ch 3
Jujutsu spent ch 2 on Itadori being interrogated, then he started school ch 3

Black Clover, Jujutsu, and Kimetsu all went back to semi-episodic villains and slowed down a bit later but they did something that actually mattered first, they spent a few chapters expanding the setting without needing to shove in some forgettable villain. Where a lot of series fail I think is thinking they need to show off everyone's powers in the first 2 volumes before bothering with anything that'll actually matter plot-wise.

Maybe TSS's pretty powers will make the difference, who knows, but so far is there's no sense of any events mattering, which hasn't been a good sign in the past. It hasn't shown much reason to care about it aside from "Look! Fights!".
The 4 manga you mentioned aren't really accurate comparisons since they have a different format. Their inspiration seems to be closer to the traditional battle shonen format of MC being "weak", then needing to grow stronger (weak in the sense of their world's established power system, Itadori is strong physically, but he had no spiritual power in the beginning).

On the other hand, TSS has very clear inspiration from Kekkai Sensen like Mamou pointed out. A future world with super-powered humans from different ethnicities, a weak MC with a power that isn't useful in combat, and the rag-tag group of power fighters that the MC is a part of.

Kekkai Sensen started off as episodic fights that established the strength of the main cast and gradually led into a bigger plotline, and I suspect that TSS will be doing the same. That's why we are getting these episodic fights, and that's also why you can't really compare it to the 4 manga you mentioned. These fights are the "important" things for this format, at least for now.

Exactly, comparing Tokyo Shinobi Squad with typical battle shounens is something totally innacurate, really, since chapter 1 it was pretty obvious that TSS it's not your typical battle shounen, it's not about Jin trying to be the best in something, it will not have training with a master or a tournament arc. There's no mystery about the structure, it's a episodic manga that will get into big things when everybody is well estabilished, and so far is doing a good job with these episodic chapters and fights, now it's just a matter of wait and see if the readers liked.

Yeeeeaaaahhh....the issue there is that Jump isn't really the supportive environment for those kind of manga.

The thing we need to remember is that Jump is analysed harder than basically the entire rest of the industry put together. There are entire online communities (this one included) that are built on discussing every new chapter in every issue week by week. This means that, in order to maintain a feedback loop that allows the manga to build a fanbase (which is what enables a manga to become an established part of the Jump canon), it needs to be able to maintain some strong degree of discussion over the first two months.

Tokyo Shinobi Squad hasn't had that kind of discussion from what I've seen. The most reaction it got was the polarizing reaction of the world building in the first chapter, but that receded pretty quickly and, in its place, we've had chapters which aren't really doing much to build "a world of endless possibilities" or a distinctive identity. The manga is just kinda there.

Youtube is just one thing. In Japan you have competition from streaming services, web novels, light novels, games and much more. It's much more difficult thing to do this day than it was in the 80s and 90s where the variety of entertainment wasn't as big as it began in the 2000s and even more on the 2010s. They're not fighting only other publishers/magazines in manga but other industries as well.

Or a badass scientist reviving society in the stone age.

kkkkkk your obsession with trying to talk for the japanese readers or Shonen Jump and dictate what they like or want it's actually getting funny, you should apply for a job as a editor on WSJ in Japan, i'm sure with your knowledge about what will or not work as a manga you would find the next One Piece and also prevented Jump from publishing Samurai 8, since you know, it's a failure!

I'm surprised people are still acting like the general stagnation of hit sport titles is a new thing when there has only been four series of the genre able to join the Jump canon still 2000.

Nice antagonism mate. Also, I'm just providing my own view based on what I've observed.

Aniplex is working quick with Jump stuff. TPN got on Toonami a few weeks after it ended in Japanese too (I think it just finished a week or two ago)

Sorry for being totally off-topic from what's currently being discussed, but I've been continuing my conquest of slightly older, quickly axed, fully translated WSJ romcoms. Just finished Pajama na Kanojo, and up until about 2/3 of the way through the series, it was pretty interesting. The only thing I can think of that caused such a sudden change in the entire plot/cast was that the author must've heard the series was going to end and decided to give every arc they had initially planned a chapter or 2 up until the series ended. That's the only thing I can think of that could explain basically dropping the main premise of the series to randomly.

As I mentioned previously, Double Arts was a fantastic read. While I still prefer Nisekoi, I do wish I could've learned more about the world and characters that were being built up. Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa was actually pretty good as well. You could definitely feel the rushed ending, but the gimmick and dynamics were still interesting to read. I also wish that one could've lasted a couple volumes longer.

Interestingly enough, I still think the readers/editorial department made the right decisions in the long-term since I'd still say my top 3 recent romances would be Nisekoi, WNL, and Yuuna; all of which obviously survived early termination. So far, from what I've read, I'd probably rank them like this: iShoujo > Double Arts > Kagami no Kuni no Harisugawa > Cross Account > Himedol > Love Rush > Pajama na Kanojo

I just started reading Koisome Momiji, so I'm interested to see how that'll be. Does anyone else have any recommendations?

Fujimaki wrote himself into a corner early on,so the editors put it out of it's misery. Should've been a lot better and was a disgraceful effort from Fujimaki. Rising Impact and King Golf are so much better.
