I jus't can't see the series ending that soon. Latest volume that came out went up to chapter 133 which was the beginning of the mini arc that ended with Emma's return in 144. One volume is 9 chapters so volume 16 will be chapters 134-142 so at the very least volume 17 will be until chapter 151, which is 6 chapters when counting from the chapter coming Monday.
The series ending in volume 18 would mean resolving all lose ends in like 10 chapters which I just can't see happening considering the current pace of the manga.
I'm betting for it ending probably on volume 20.

Yeah, I'm thinking more of 19-20 volumes so 169-179 chapters maybe. I don't think the series can end in less chapters considering the upcoming developments are pretty major story wise.

Explanation from Gotou book about why Mazinger Z is (together Shaman King) the only "banned" manga from Jump:

I know is in french (book is in french). Trying to understand it, Go Nagai was in every major magazine, which was not-ethical according to the Shonen Jump editorial. So no exclusive sign, and Nagai left Jump.

Did Takei do the same? Or there's another reason for SK being "banned"? I'm not aware of what happened.

He was mad with Shueisha and took Shaman King with him to Kodasha, if I recall well

I figure that means the Jumbor reboot is dead at Ultra Jump then? I always thought the fact they even accepted to reboot a flop was a massive sign of how they respected the guy, so I am confused at how the whole mess has happened.

Well, they basically made him finish his series in a rush and ended up writing an apology message on SK final chapter iirc. Then in the Kanzenban Edition he was able to modify the series ending and make it a bit better than the one that was published while serialization and in the original volumes, what he called a true ending. Then they gave him the chance to continue in Jump X publishing Shaman King Flowers, but this sequel was also axed along with the magazine suspension October 2014.

In the end, he was actually never able to finish the main series correctly or continue with the sequels he had planned, so he just took everything and went to Kodansha, where they started to release a new Shaman King edition in 2018 and where he publishes Shaman King: The Super Star, with a quarterly schedule iirc.

EDIT: Found those afterword messages.

This one was after chapter 286, when the series was axed on the last original Volume 32.

And this one was the final afterword for Shaman King after chapter 300 included in the Kanzenban Edition, Volume 27.

Go Nagai was publishing 4 mangas at the same time and before the 5? How the heck did he do that? 🤯

Is a pity that Mazinger Z is one of the two ''banned'' titles, because popularity-wise is by far the most important, popular and known Jump manga from 70s (together with Kochikame). 3rd place would be for Kinnikuman if you count it as a 70s manga (I count it as a 80s manga), but if you don't count Kinnikuman, would be for Cobra or Ring ni Kakero.

Rest of 70s Jump are obscure. Play Ball is so unknown in West it pains me :emobirb

FYI, regarding the TPN stuff, Jump editorial is infamous for exaggerating things like this for publicity. Whole Cake Island from OP for example was being called "concluded" months before it actually happened.

Isn't Shaman King "banned" because Kodansha bought the copyright and trademark from Shueisha to publish the older volumes as Takei was part of them now?

Because there's other cases like Saint Seiya, Hokuto no Ken and City Hunter where their sequels came on other publishers but Shueisha still publish older volumes and is able to use the characters and franchise on merchandise at the point where they published, which doesn't happen with Shaman King.

I think this is correct enough. Like I think others would know better (patch café runner Andysislands has a timeline of how everything went down so they might be more up on things), but I’m fairly sure Kodansha going through the process of extracting Takei’s IP from Shueisha came with a part-ownership of those series, so they could block any crossover with Jump for anniversaries and the like if they so desired.

Damn i just discovered now that Iwamoto Naoki published a one shot in the Autumn issue of JumpSQ.Rise on November 2018!!! The title is something like "Eiru ga matte iru", isn't listed on MAL and not even on Baka Updates (which is rare), so this is why i didn't knew and i think a lot of people too. Please Naoki, return to Shonen Jump!

Starting to really get the vibe that S8 is not intended to be a long series. Don’t think it’ll be short. But I just get this vibe that it’s not planned to be insanely long. Maybe like AssClass length

Kishimoto said he's aiming for 100 chapters

Hmm. Usually they go over when they give an estimated ending point. However, I can’t imagine Kishimoto wanting a long serialization again, so probably reasonable to believe that as a good ending point.

Could be similar to Toriyama’s brief returns to the magazine. Come back for a short series, then dip(obviously 100 chapters is significantly longer than any of Toriyama’s returns though)

In the interview, he did say he intended for Naruto to be shorter as well, so his 10 volume estimation for Samurai 8 should be taken with a grain of salt.
