Yeah, these are all really good points / predictions. I think WSJ's game plan in 2021 will involve two main angles:
  1. Establishing a new hit in 2020
  2. Giving a 2018 or 2019 manga a boost with an anime adaptation
The first angle is obviously pretty hard to predict the specifics of right now. But it's interesting to think about which current series might land an adaptation, since there haven't really been any debuts lately that are Neverland tier. Shueisha will likely still want to throw out some new anime alongside what's running currently, even if it's something that's kind of middle tier, in hopes of the adaptation boosting it to true success status.

With that in mind, these seem like the current best candidates for a 2021 (or maybe late 2020) anime adaptation:
  • Act-Age
  • Jujutsu Kaisen
  • Chainsaw Man
and maybe Samurai 8, if it succeeds over the next year. Act-Age and Chainsaw Man in particular are very weird, experimental projects so adaptations of them would be interesting, to say the least.
I'd throw in Jigokuraku and Ao no Flag as potential series that can get an anime adaption. I just hope they won't put these series to the side cause they're not in the main magazine.

... I give them five chapters for the brother to get over his issues.
Unless it is cancelled, I really doubt this will happen so soon.

The brother with his issues is part of the mystery (and likely a recurrent gag).

I doubt it too.

Which means I will probably be dropping the series after five chapters (at most), because the "Look, this depressed traumatized kid is feeling scared and humiliated! You should all laugh at his misery!" type of humour is something that absolutely disgusts me.

CP in a quality that doesn't look like utter garbage.

I think you have some mild issues you should have worked out.

Ah, yes. Because obviously not enjoying seeing people in pain makes me the sick one.

I need to say something to both parts:

Rain Spectre, what other people feel as disgusting isn't your bussiness. Not all people can tolerate the same and you shouldn't judge this.

NeenNeen, these characters are fictitious. People could enjoy this style, because it's fiction. That doesn't mean these readers will enjoy real people suffering.

As much as I like Ao no Flag, I think it won't ever get an anime or at least a decent one. It feels so hard to make it appealing to a major audience while maintaining its tone.
It's a romance but does not have panty shots nor harem and there isn't a girl being disputed by two (or more) pretty boys either. So the only audience it can have is LGBTQ+ people and fujos. It would be a ballsy move from Shueisha to aim for this audience in conservative Japan.

I didn't get this at all from the first chapter though.

Everyone in the family really tried to help and protect him, and the series seemed to treat the brother's obsession way more seriously than I was expecting. It wasn't exactly "oh that wacky brother", they really are bothered by him and there's a past explaining his actions. It's not 100% serious, of course, but I didn't find neither the series nor the characters dismissive of him. I don't feel like his misery was the part we should laugh at.

Shueisha has done that before with Ore Monogatari (which didn't have the LGBT+ community). Not Shueisha but I don't recall any of those tropes in Real Girl (I think another guy came but MC isn't a pretty boy). While original Tsuki ga Kirei didn't either. There's probably other recent romance series not to fall in those tropes so I assume they do have an audience. Maybe not Shonen but it doesn't seem all that ballsy since they keep being made anyway.

There's plenty of recent anime about gay guys (some explicitly about a gay relationship, many just very heavy subtext).

The problem with Blue Flag rather is that it's not fetish-y enough to gather that sort of audience. It's a drama with gay characters rather than a BL or yaoi thing which isn't quite the same appeal. But of course it all depends on who's interested, if a studio wants to adapt it then it'll be adapted.

We have Given this season which is a drama about gay guys and isn't all that fetish-y. It does have a music theme (which is what got me to watch in the first place) as they're in a band but if that does well it at least shows fetish isn't needed.

I don't think Blue Flag would be that good though unless it's complete. There's no good stopping point and in the potential that it does fail it would just be another romance anime that never got any resolution due to not being popular enough to get a second season.

Yes. That's another problem I see with it's adaptation.

I would say the word "fetish" isn't so right (although it still fits at some level). The word should be "fanservice".

I see images of "Given", it has exactly the kind of guys (physically and emotionally) popular with shonen-ai/yaoi fans. So, it still use fanservice to gather popularity.

In change, "Blue Flag" has guys not so traditonally attractive for shonen-ai/yaoi fans

I know. I never said that other people aren't allowed to enjoy it, did I?

All I said was that I personally can't stand that type of humour, and I get told that there's something wrong with me because of it. I think I have the right to be upset about that.

Yeah, the others were really nice. That's why I still want to see where it goes.

But if 'brother is trying to kill or hurt him at every opportunity and there's nothing anyone can do about it' is going to be the main theme of the series, then I know it won't hold my attention for long.

Tsurun's comment for Mitama Security: Spirit Busters:

Tsurun Hatomune: If asked whether I'm a creator or a reader, I'd say creator. I'm Tsurun Hatomune. Nice to meet you.

Also, remember that Yozakura's Color Page?

Hitsuji Gondaira: I got my brother to draw the background on the chapter title page. He's superfast at drawing forests and trees. Give me those skills!

What was the problem for Takuan no Batsu so it is mentioned now? Never read it so I have no idea.

I don't even remember much of Takuan and Batsu except that it had lots of loli fanservice. I think it was just another basic exorcist series otherwise with minimum effort put into the setting.

they said they rejected Kanata because he was introvert unlike the other Jump mc
but Takuan is a lazy loner and not positive and optimistic like other Jump mc and his series still got accepted
