Ooh this is for me!! Jump is doing plenty with the paralympics, from Young Jump’s WHO I AM (in association with the campaign of the same name by WOWOW), to Paralympic Jump, the magazine running to promote the event, with covers by Takehiko Inoue, photoshoots, interviews (some BY Takehiko Inoue), and several comic series, including a TOUGH spin-off, a biographical comic for Kamiji Yui, and Bravo Blind Soccer, a series by Yoichi Takahashi, creator of Captain Tsubasa!

If you want a good idea of what the magazine is like, I’ve covered all three issues out so far on twitter (half self-plug, half actual useful information, so it’s fine)

I’d love to see more things like this done with the paralympics, but Shueisha and WOWOW in particular are pushing the boat out on promoting the paralympics right now
No wonder I didn't know about this because I read things by volume, but it is great Shueisha effort on this. I will look for the series you mentioned because I think it is important to contribute to these efforts. Let's see what the Shonen Jump itself will do later because for the good or bad, the reach is much wider. I know that doing this kind of drawing like prosthetic and such is not in the book of many Jump authors and theirs mostly cartoon-ish styles and therefore it is not easy to do, Inoue does a fantastic job on that, but he is a master in his art and really put effort in what he does. We will see.
Thank you for the complete post.

It must be said every now and then, Innoue truly is a gem in the manga industry.
He is a master in his craft, no doubt about that.

This is annoying. Neverland got already a Jump cover like 4 weeks ago. I understand it is the most pushed manga by Nakano together with Dr.Stone (and unlike Dr.Stone it sells) but...

Meanwhile, Jujutsu and Act-age continue for Nakano as ''lol I'm not giving them any covers''

At least in December we should be getting a Chainsawman cover

There could be another reason: Maybe some mangaka just don't want to do covers? A cover and the lead color page that comes with it are a lot of work for just 3-4 pages. Combine that with the 19 pages of the chapter and their already stressful work becomes much more stressful for a while.

And yet MHA got 3 covers being Horikoshi the one with the most delicate health. Also, Act-age is author + guionist, so it should be as much work as Neverland or Dr.Stone.

2019.01~2019.45 Covers (by Octavian; I eliminated the double covers spreads)
One Piece 5 (17 28, 34, 35, 44)
The Promised Neverland 4 (8 20 38 45)
Kimetsu no Yaiba 3 (18 29 43)
My Hero Academia 3 (9 33 42)
Haikyuu 3 (12 30 41)
Black Clover 2 (16 32)
Dr.Stone 2 (13 31)
We Never Learn 2 (11 19)
Yuuna-san 1 (11)
Jujutsu kaisen 1 (21)
Act-age 1 (10)
Samurai 8 1 (24)
Chainsawman 1 (1)
Kamio Yui 1 (15)

7 issues left. I'm seeing Black Clover and Dr.Stone getting another cover; Jujutsu and Act-age being as screwed by Nakano as always, and WNL is the big question for me since I was-am expecting a cover this month or next month because anime season 2.

PD: I hope Chainsawman gets the issue 52 for the lulz

MHA might even get another cover once the anime actually starts airing.

Well if there are no new series starting then JJK and Act-Age might have a shot at a cover before the end of the year and if there are then I guess they'll get some early next year or something.
I think Chainsawman will actually get the cover next year since it started with issue 1 and after issue 1/2020 is released it'll be one full year for the series.

1. We don't know if Horikoshi has been having declining health. We know that he's been a few times when he took breaks, but that could mean anything as light as the common cold. he's never spoken on having any serious health issues.

2. Even if Horikoshi was having health issues, just because HE chooses to do extra work despite having health issues doesn't mean that everyone else will suddenly just do extra work they don't want/have to do.

I've mentioned this before, but both Boichi and Pozuka seem to be 2 of the artist in the magazine who are able to get a shit ton of work despite making a weekly manga. Boichi use to being working on two weekly manga at the same time during Dr.Stone's run. And Posuka consistently releases new illustrations to her social media accounts on a regular basis, all while working on Neverland.

We don't know how cover pages and spreads are chosen every week, other than sometimes a series may be given a cover to celebrate and/or promote something(Tv Anime, Film, New Volume, Anniversary, Character Poll, etc.). However I can't imagine Jump or the editors would FORCE an artist to make a color spreads when they don't feel like it, or don't want to. I'm sure the editors of each series likely encourage the creator's of poplar series to make color pages, and Shueisha likely encourages them to make art for the covers. But if the creator of one of their hit series just doesn't want to do color pages like that, what is Shueisha going to do? Cancel one of their big sellers because of that?

TLDR; Anyway, what i was getting at is, my theory for why Dr.Stone and Neverland receives so many color pages and covers is that Boichi and Posuka are just able to pump color pages out with ease, and it's likely just convenient to have two artist who can do that. Everyone on here seems to look at receiving colors pages as high privilege and an honor, and completely ignore the fact that maybe having the extra task of creating color images to your already busy schedule of storyboarding, writing, drawing, and inking a new manga every week, might not be that exciting for a lot of mangaka in the magazine. I'd imagine it's extremely hype in the beginning, because if editorial request that you make a color page it is solid evidence that your manga is doing well. But once you are about a year into the series, it's likely just extra work and more stress at that point, depending on how you handle life as a mangaka.

I'm very sceptical about the commentaries of "Jujutsu Kaisen and Act-age maybe don't have covers becuase their authors don't want". I don't imagine any author declining to do covers, and Jujutsu and Act-age have gotten a good amount of color pages (yet not covers).

I didn't say anything about the editor forcing any artist to do color spreads tbh. But I seriously think that Nakano has a clear preference for determined series over other ones.

Both Jujutsu Kaisen and Act-age are going to end their second year of serialization and there has been little promotion or pushing (specially for Jujutsu). I even continue reading comments about "Act-age and Jujutsu are just very new titles in Jump" when Jujutsu has already like 75 chapters and Act-age I think is in its chapter 85.

Meanwhile, I recall Dr.Stone, Neverland, even WNL getting a good fair of promotion in their second year of serialization. Dunno, but I feel Nakano has treated differently Jujutsu and Act-age compared with the pre-2018 titles.

Fun fact that I saw:
-2nd year of Act-age and Jujutsu: just 1 cover
-2nd year of Dr.Stone: 4 covers. For TPN: 5 covers. For WNL: 2 covers.

Again, an advantage that Dr.Stone and Neverland have in this situation over other Jump titles are that they are titles done by a team of a writer + an artist. But, Act-age is also in this situation.

And that's why 2020 is going to be an interesting year, since in theory there are good chances of both Jujutsu Kaisen and Act-age getting an anime announcement.

This argument doesn't convince anybody regarding Act Age because not too long ago Act Age fictional agency website was updated with one more full color drawing. It doesn't convince to anybody though. Who don't want to have its series promoted shouldn't be in Jump in the first place, there's no such thing as they don't want to.

Jujutsu and Act Age among the "recent" series of the Jump are the ones that sell more, so it is useless to pull out conspiracy theories about why Jump does not give it the colors.

They simply give them to the most famous or sold manga, there is not much to understand.

I’m not so much saying that’s why Act Age and Jujutsu don’t get covers.
But you seemed to be complaining about “why do all these other series getting so many covers”.
And only providing the answer that maybe the creators of said series are just able to pump out more work in a shorter time span.

And I’m sure everyone in Jump wants a color page or a cover every now and then.
Despite what I said, at least a couple ppl HAVE to have a color page every week, and somebody HAS to take the cover whether anyone wants to or not.

I’m just simply stating that it’s completely plausible that not every mangaka wants to draw 3 or 4 covers and color spreads a year like Dr.Stone or Neverland. Some ppl might rather only do it once or twice in a year, if at all.

This argument doesn't convince anybody regarding Act Age because not too long ago Act Age fictional agency website was updated with one more full color drawing. It doesn't convince to anybody though. I would argue that this supports the “maybe she just doesn’t want to do covers” Theory even more.
Maybe if she’s already doing this extra work on color pages for a website, she’d rather just focus her extra time on that, and does t want to add any additional work on a bunch of color spreads for the actual magazine.

It is not that often that the site is updated and it probably doesn't have a strict timeline so he can take his time. Not to mention that the series is done by two people, it less work for Usuzaki Shiro, who is drawing.
A much more plausible argument than this one is that maybe Shueisha realized that Act-Age makes more success on the digital front, social media, etc. and that it is much more profitable to feed its website. I don't follow Act-Age popularity on social media, but it is a much more believable argument than the one you are defending, which is laughable, sorry for the honesty.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

This hypothesis can produce a good discussion. Does Shueisha make a digital publicity and popularity study of their series or they still use only the archaic poll system to make their decisions? Because a series can be buzzing on social media, but not necessarily going well into the magazine poll for many reasons, it is not everybody that has patience to send letters nowadays, it is just a small percentage of the Jump readers. With this insight they can give the series more time to sell through digital media.

I'm too lazy to check but I'm curious to know how many CPs have JJK and Act Age received this year?

IF JJK and Act Age have gotten plenty of CPs instead, then yeah it's Nakano not giving them the covers.
