I have a friend working on the translation. It'll likely be a few minutes.

Translation?
I've been out of pace with this topic for a while, so I am completely out of context, but:

For the first one, it goes "By the way, approximately 20 of Shounen Jump's series have have total digital sales higher than 10 million yen. About 50 have have higher than 1 million yen. The artists' total pay is a combination of this, paper manga sales, overseas sales, royalties, and writing salary. There's still a long way to go."

...so it sounds like "digital sales don't make much" is the moral of the story.

FYI, it's for the month of May.

So just round up the price of one volume to 500 yen. This means in a month, 20 series sell more than 20000 digital copies and 50 series sell more than 2000 digital copies.
Well, not terrible, not great.

The thing is that this amount is probably far from significant for total sales.

In mean, if a manga has 50K copies in print, it is extremely unlikely it will have 20K digital copies.

Spy x Family seems to have more than 280K copies in print, but around 20K digital copies.

I would say for a shonen jump series it is unlikely, in other magazines we have seen examples of digital being much more than physical

goldfish wife(Seinen) and nagi no Oitoma(josei) for example from the top of my head

You're right. Other magazines could have more digital sales.

I think there are even some magazines that are mainly digital.

Continuing on per Buranchi's request, the Twitter account belongs to a guy calling himself "Nakaji" and says he worked as an editor for Jump from 2004-2017, and then on Jump plus since 2017. He says he's worked with the following series (many I'm not aware of, sorry if I get the titles "wrong": Blue Flag, Maiden Empire, Amnesia Battery, Lycopene the Tomatoy Poodle, and Torture Princess Time, as well as the official Gintama app.

The second link was to a series of tweets that actually lead up to it, and it does change the context quite a bit. I hate that Twitter puts everything backwards. Here's the whole thing:
Of course, just as May's number of active users was the highest ever, and therefore our ad revenue also grew...we were able to give a really big influx of ad revenue to the series being serialized, too. This is the big advantage to running a series in Jump+ that I hope I can get across.

Right now, series in Jump+ make money the following ways:
1. Writing salary + Ad revenue + Chapter sales + T-Shirts
2. Paper and digital comics
3. Overseas sales/chapter sales
4. Royalties from anime adaptations and merchandising.

In fact, with regards to #3 and overseas sales, these are all doing quite good. There's a lot getting picked up in other countries, resulting in some pretty good paychecks coming in. In Europe, in France, especially, where paper comics are still extremely popular, they're printing a lot for us.

For comics in #2, as the paper edition of Jump+ continues to gain popularity, the series in it are also getting more demand for second printings. In May, there were around 30 series that sold more than 1 million yen in digital editions and there were some that sold more than 10 million yen, speaking only of series in Jump+, including series that have finished, but not including chapter sales.

Since Jump+ doesn't have many series that have been picked up for adaptations, the honest truth is that #4 doesn't have much to show yet. (It's hard to compete with Shounen Jump, which has so many great ones.) I really want to extend our series so that more artists in Jump+ have this fourth pillar of support.
Which now brings us back to the original tweet, which I'mma edit a bit to account for knowing the context better:
By the way, approximately 20 of Shounen Jump's series have have digital sales higher than 10 million yen. About 50 have have higher than 1 million yen, speaking only of series in Shounen Jump, including series that have finished, but not including chapter sales. The artists' total pay here comes from paper manga sales, overseas sales, royalties, and writing salary. There's still a long way to go."
So out of context, the first tweet made it sound like "man, Shounen Jump doesn't make much from digital sales", but in context it's more of a "damn, Shounen Jump artists don't even rely on digital sales, and look how hard we're going to have to work until Jump+ can compete with that!".

And this has been your marketing moment.

Wait, hypotically, if we use 500 yen to calculate the digital, is digital price is higher than physical price? I remember many years ago, some physical tankubon was around 410 yen if i am not mistaken.

Regarding S8, from the very beginning I don 't believe in Kishimoto after Naruto part 2 and don't like S8 since the 1st chapter. But somebody in this thread make me want to root for S8 to be successful. :derp

So, i vote for 80k-120k before dropping from the chart. But I hope it can get more than that. Kalau manga tahap biasa macam Pedang Pembunuh Iblis boleh berjaya, apa salahnya.

Juat check amazon, digital copy of newest jump manga costs 460 yen, while physical copy costs 484 yen.
Wow. the different is not that big. I thought without the cost of paper, printing, shipping etc in can cost far less..

It varies widely from platform to platform, but digital stores in general take a much bigger cut than physical stores so there's not a whole lot of difference for the publishers in terms of cost, other than not having to deal with overstocking.

Wait, just to recap, by digital stores, you're referring to people ordering the books, not something like Kindle, right?

Because I thought we just established that digital was lower. I think.

I'm suddenly very confused.

If this is the case, is this mean that publishers make more money from 1 copy of digital tankubon than a physical version?

If that is true then, didnt this mean that this will have an impact onwhole digital sales being comparable if not already surpassing physical sales. Sounds like that conclusion was based on skewed understanding if the whole business. It's not the whole picture?
