Maybe the article was delayed? Back when I did some sports journalism, the articles I wrote were held back for months before being actually posted, it's possible the report was written at the start of October, and they just sat on it until now.
I mean, I understand it looks kinda sketchy but would you really think Shueisha would release a press release stating that according to their numbers from november 2018 to november 2019 One Piece was the best selling manga in Japan (and in the world obviously) only to be later disproven/corrected?

These are Shueisha's current numbers, that's a fact. Now let's see what Oricon reports, because Kimetsu will probably still be #1 in their charts.

Journalism sites will get 2 clicks, video will get 2 clicks. Win-win situation for them.

After further discussing the situation, I've come to the conclusion that the information in that tweet is outdated, and as such, the likely situation is that this article was created prior to KnY's enormous growth.

It cites KnY as being at 10 million, when we know for an absolute fact that it's at 20 million now (likely over that number, even).

To me, this signifies that the article was sat on, and when it was written, there was no way to have guessed that KnY would have done as well as it did. Meaning, it was a safe assumption that One Piece would win out this year.

We'll have Oricon numbers within the next few days, but I ask that everyone please don't jump to premature conclusions regarding this situation. Thanks.

Welp, going on Twitter there are people like Yonkou celebrating. So for sure there will be lots of mixed opinions once Oricon charts releases.

The OP staff twitter said "集英社調べ" which means "Shueisha's examination".

When was the article written anyways? Do you have a more in-depth explanation why you think so??

Regardless...

Personally speaking, I feel that with the general ineptitude of the editorial department that's been shown over the last few years, I'm inclined to believe this is bollocks. I have very little reason to trust their numbers thanks to the incompetence they've shown. So I'm gonna wait for the Oricon charts to make a full assessment.

Its reasonable to think it's outdated but at the same time I feel like they were lying about KnY's prints for the past two months. At least, in this article it makes me feel that October doesn't exist at all.

I really dont understand whats happening but I think we should wait for the Oricon numbers, given what has been said for some users here, the article could be really outdated and the couple of last years, we always take Oricon numbers to know what are the biggest selling series of the year, so why change now.

While all this discussion about One Piece vs Kimetsu being the top sales for the year is going on, I can't help but take a step back and think about how crazy it is that when it first started, Kimetsu sold about 15k for its first volume. Using sales as the only metric, this is definitely well within the range of sales that would put most series very much in danger of being axed if they can't pull it together ASAP. Lucky for Kimetsu, it did exactly that with a fan impression that quickly improved and sales followed to better levels shortly thereafter. Honestly, I think it's pretty amazing that Kimetsu has blown up to this degree and this quickly. Regardless of the ultimate outcome, it's amazing to think that the race for number one ended up this close, especially considering that most of Kimetsu's sales came from the latter half of the year rather than steadily throughout the year.

The article was most likely written late September/early October, around the time when OP volume 94 and KnY volume 17 were printed. The circulation numbers present in the article (12.7 for OP and 10.8 for KnY) match up very well with what the print number from each series was at that point).

That along with the fact that in the article itself, the editor states that Kimetsu total circulation had reached 10 million which is the known print number from back then (by mid of November, KnY was already at 16 mil circulation).

Article specifies an exact range for the data (2018 Nov.19 - 2019 Nov. 17). Unless the claim is that article (and by extension, Shueisha) is outright lying, "outdated" doesn't make sense.

10 million is mentioned as a point in which the series achieved a major milestone back in September, not as the latest print count.

I was gonna say that Shueisha's numbers should be more accurate than Oricon's (since they don't track ALL shops ). But if they're contradicting their own print numbers, that's really weird.

The article doesnt say current print is 10 million, it says total circulation reached 10 million back in September, which is correct

Why would they publish an outdated article with number from 2 months ago anyway? Not to mention official OP account is currently celebrating, citing the same numbers. It doesn't make sense, unless they're actively trying to lie to the public.

You're arguing the information isn't outdated while simultaneously citing the 10 million number, which is 100% outdated.

You can't have both be true. They'd mention the 20 million if this information was up-to-date.

If we count from November 26th to October 23rd, that makes 13M. (3M the starting point and 16M the last point). So where those 10.8M comes from?
