Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I was referring to the MC's robot design as well. In my opinion, it's lackluster.
it could always get a power up

speaking of which
the third chapter introduced the zipper thing
and it looks like those things works like Mega Man powers

Thats exactly what i thought when that robot appeared in the second chapter, looked like a Mega Man enemy and etc, which i think is nice.

Toriko is still the face in 2014 (Issue 19)

AC wasn't the face of the magazine until 2015 (Issue 6/7, May 1st), it becomes the face 3 years after it debuted

MHA starts to become the face of the magazine on issue 19 of 2015 (June 4th) (more or less 2015-2016 only One Piece and AC are the dominant factor)
Issue 4-5 of 2017 would be more prominent. Issue 21/22 of 2017 is dead on though. it becomes the face 3 years after it debuted.

Haikyuu on issue 35 of 2017. 5 years after it debuted. They did replace Hinata with Emma for a while in the beginning of 2019 for three issues in a row, but still Haikyuu comes out on top throughout the year.

The current golden poster boy Tanjirou becomes the face 3.5 years after it debuted. So in other news water is wet, if Demon Slayer does not become popular then Emma would be the face, ala 3 years after it debuted.

So there wasn't anything wrong with Shuiesha back in 2011. Bleach anime got cancelled the following year. Kuroko never become the face despite 8 million 3 years in a row.

Not really, both BNHA and Haikyuu had the first real "big 3" cover on issue #21/22 of 2016: http://www.imagebam.com/image/d6e9c91327997537

The cover you're mentioning for BNHA only has Deku bigger because the manga had the lead color page for that issue so of course they put him bigger, but after that in the next 3 group covers until the one i mentioned he was just the normal size and in the mix with the other main characters.

Also they did not replace Hinata with Emma at the beginning of 2019, the first double cover of the year has Emma and Hinata at the same size and the second and third one have Hinata in front of Emma

Hell, if we're going by the argument of "Yozakura is a comedy, you're being unfair by comparing it to battle manga", Saiki is a just as valid a demonstration. The first 20 chapters gradually spoonfeeds characters, first establishing Saiki and his parents, then one by one introducing Nendou, Kaidou, Terahashi, Yumehara, Hairo and Toritsuka one after another. The result is that readers slowly get introduced one by one to the characters in Asou's initial plans for the series and how they relate to Saiki himself. This creates a sense of stability since it gets readers used to the set-up and leads people to be interested when Asou expands on both the cast and their dynamics.

Yozakura, meanwhile, introduces eight characters in its first chapter, then does virtually nothing with half of them until Chapter 10. By that point, the series is suddenly introducing even more characters, even though none of the ones it already has feel fully established. It doesn't help that virtually none of the characters interact with anyone aside from the main duo, meaning they feel even more isolated and meaningless.
Same also goes for Spy x Family with its 18 chapters. You get the characters there one by one and some stuff gets told in a not in your face way. Like Anya's fear of being in school disappearing due Becky being kind and helpful to her or how Damian protects her despite his desire to win and impress his dad. Or the world building stuff like the introduction of the secret police with the brother or how there is still a lot of hate towards Westalia or even background stuff like the big kid with glasses in the background, which shows the readers continuity. And same now with the dog, we hardly saw much of him or her but what we saw already told us a lot about the dog's personality, like saving a stranger's kid or calm he acts as so far he/she has yet to bark or how understanding he/she is due the foresight it got and how said foresight can be seen by Anya's mind reading which is just bloody awesome.^^

All this talk about how the Big Three evolved over this past decade has got me interested, so I went to ComicVine and looked at all of the group double issue Shonen Jump covers and looked at which 2 to 4 characters were the most prominent, beginning with the first 2010 Issue till now. If I felt conflicted about which characters were the most prominent, I'd take a look at the TOC of the issue to decide. Here's my results:

You can double check here, with this page containing the first 2010 issue.

2010:
Luffy - Naruto - Ichigo (36 - 37)

2011:
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko - Ichigo (5 - 6)
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (20 - 21)
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (35 - 36)

2012:
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (3 - 4)
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (5 - 6)
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (21 - 22)
Luffy - Toriko - Naruto (36 - 37)

2013:
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (6 - 7)
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (37 - 38)

2014:
Luffy - Naruto - Koro-sensei (4 - 5)
Luffy - Naruto - Kuroko - Toriko (6 - 7)*
Luffy - Naruto - Toriko (36 - 37)
*This was mainly to promote all the ongoing anime. Nisekoi's actually in front, but it was to promote a special chapter that ran that issue.

2015:
Luffy - Toriko (4 - 5)
Luffy - Koro-sensei (6 - 7)
Luffy - Koro-sensei (37 - 38)

2016:
Luffy - Koro-sensei (3 - 4)
Luffy - Koro-sensei - Kankichi - Toriko (5 - 6)
Luffy - Deku - Hinata (21 - 22)
Luffy - Kankichi (36 - 37)

2017:
Luffy - Hinata - Asta - Deku (2 - 3)
Luffy - Hinata - Asta - Deku (4 - 5)
Luffy - Deku - Hinata (21 - 22)
Luffy - Hinata - Deku (36 - 37)

2018:
Luffy - Deku - Hinata - Asta (2 - 3)
Luffy - Deku - Hinata (4 - 5)
Luffy - Hinata - Asta (21 - 22)
Luffy - Deku - Hinata (36 - 37)

2019:
Luffy - Deku - Emma - Hinata (4 - 5)
Luffy - Deku - Emma - Hinata (6 - 7)
Luffy - Deku - Hinata (22 - 23)
Luffy - Deku - Emma - Hinata (36 - 37)

This is what I've got so far. I believe this is accurate for the most part (The order of some placements can be contested) but I think this paints a good picture of what Jump sees, or tries to promote, as a pillar of the magazine. Seeing the progression is quite interesting: 2014 to 2016 really shook up the magazine, permanently altering the status quo from #2 onwards. I think these coming double issues are going to be really interesting: that tweet may very well signal Tanjiro's entrance into this list, likely as early as Issues 6 - 7, knocking Deku down a peg and booting Emma and possibly Hinata off entirely for the rest of Yaiba's run.

God, whenever One Piece ends, though... it's disappearance will be a vacuum echoing throughout the entire magazine.

SIDE NOTE: After looking at all of these covers, I kind of want Naoshi Komi to draw another romance manga that isn't fucking Nisekoi. His girls are honestly really cute.

EDIT: Some changes, at Shinuki's suggestion.

The moral of the story is that trying to argue what the "Big 3" of this era is is silly because it changes constantly depending on circumstance and there's no hard argument as to what the "pillars" even are.

Better yet, do another adventure/battle manga because I'm still salty as fuck over Double Arts.

Or arguing what the "big 3" of any era were for that matter.

Not really?

Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk and YuYu Hakusho were indeed refereed to as the "Golden Trio" of Jump in the early to mid 90s. And, while I don't think the Japanese readerbase used the term "Big 3", Horikoshi explicitly refereed to how OP, Naruto and Bleach were seen as the three pillars of Jump during his interview with Kubo, so I have to assume the idea still exists.

I would agree that stressing over a specific "big three" is quite pointless, but it is certainly true to that are pillars of the magazine, it terms of sales and exposure, you really only need to look at the covers for that lol. Could be more or less than three series at any given time.

We've been over many times how extremely competitive Jump was during both of those eras. Especially the latter where calling Bleach the third pillar is either wrong or distorting reality given how many other series had as much or more visibility during the majority of the series lifespan.
Not that Bleach wasn't a pillar. Just that its weird to just act that like Hikaru no Go, Death Note, Eyeshield 21, and so many more don't exist.

From 2004 to middle 2011, almost every group cover has Luffy, Naruto and Ichigo explicitly in the center of the cover or bigger than all others main characters with some few variations including Eyeshield, Reborn, Bakuman or Toriko as 4th, so really, its literally in your face, the editors saying how it is and what is the "face" of the magazine.

Thank you for this! I went and checked again with these suggestions in mind, and for the most part I agree with them, so I edited the list. However, for Issues 3/4 of 2016, and Issues 36/37 of 2019, I had noticed this, but I had wanted to keep a maximum of 4 characters at a time. So for the former, I went with the two significantly prominent faces (Luffy and Koro-sensei) and for the latter, I just kept it to the 4 biggest characters, though Asta can totally fit in there as a #5. I will say, I was a bit surprised at how much Jump promoted Black Clover back then - then I realized that it most resembled the traditional battle shonen that Jump profits most from.

Stop, right now.

We're not having a Big 3 argument. Any posts about it after this warning are being deleted, full stop.

This has been debated for years and you guys know it never leads to anything constructive. It's not worth it. Let's course correct, please.
