Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Weekly Shonen Jump does have some of if not the highest sales standards for manga that run there. To me, it feels like you need at least 5 digits first week to avoid the axe. Compare that to, say, Weekly Shonen Champion, where it seems like new serializations only need something 2,000 first week to survive and many of it's manga tend to not make it into the Oricon Top 50.

Simply surviving in Weekly Shonen Jump is a massive achievement in itself, in my opinion.
Eee-yup. Take SHY for example, its sales are in cancellation territory for Jump, but for Champion the strong positive reception and growing following is enough to where they already gave it an official twitter.

It is worth noting though that much of the higher expectations comes from Jump's place in the industry and the culture surrounding it. I can't think of any other magazine which has a community which scans every new series, debating if it'll survive or not. Most new series in other magazines tend to just come and go until a genuinely really good one appears out of nowhere and garners a following, which tends to be years apart (Young Jump hasn't had a new hit in four years now, for example). Most publishers would kill for Jump's track record of 2-3 new hits a year on average.

Man, if only Takamagahara got a great anime adaptation. It would've been the next Kimetsu of it's generation. Truly the most mistreated series of this century /s

Also, my apologies if this was already posted, but has KNY received the next batch of prints after running out of stock?
They went out this week.

(For the record, I don't think it needs to do a long, serious arc, per se... but SxF is also a spy comedy with no real plot to speak of, and it has a lot more variation between chapters than Yozakura does. Just give us some different situations instead of "Psycho is coming after Mutsumi, Take 12.")
Woha woha woha, dude! No real plot? The plot is the entire reason our little Spy family exists in the very first place! Only because Twilight has to get close to a paranoid hermit-like politician he got a little girl to act as daughter and only because she is at risk of being suspicious Yor got married to Twilight to avoid getting arrested/Twilight married Yor because he needed a mother for the interview, said interview which is for the school which is for the sake of the mission of getting closer to the target. Compared to Yozakura, SxF had like 14 out of 18 plot-related chapters - ground-work for the mission, get a kid, get a wife, get into school, have a plan a and b, watch both plan a and b fail and try to come up with plan c, gather Stellars, get closer as a family (all for the sake of the cover ofc :P). get a dog as reward which will boost Anya's Espers powers making her more powerful to do what might need to be done to help Papa with his mission. Like SxF story telling makes sense, it has a red string, it rises the stakes slowly but surely, it increases the cast chapter by chapter without leaving the new characters that matter as one-panel-off-charas and it always, ALWAYS, keeps its eyes on the big picture which is Twilight's mission: Get to Donavough or whatever his name is as quickly as possible or the cold war might turn hot really fast~
Yozakura on the other hand like you showed on the page, started with quite some serious baggage but said trauma was discarded like ch.2 and never mattered after that anymore. And while they are supposed to "be a married couple",they feel less like lovers like Juliet and Romeo did after their first two chapters in Kushuku Gakkou no Alice. The whole time some psycho is after Mutsumi, Taiyou saves her and that's it. That's not romance, that's just damsel in distress with extra action.

Don't you mean Juliet? lol And yeah, Juliet is a good example. Those two were on a hidden relationship since the beginning but they felt much more like a couple and had more moments in the first chapters than Yozakura has so far in 17, even though those characters are openly married. They have 0 chemistry too.

I agree overall but the second part of the text about the scans is just our reality in the west as most people here only know Shonen Jump. Most people don't even know Shonen Magazine and WSM is the second biggest historically and currently, for example. Which is quite unfortunate to me that so few magazines are known even between manga readers. But, I think much of that comes to the fact that the majority of the readers and the anime/manga community don't take their time to do a search for those things, not even in a basic look at wikipedia.

I didn't mean it as an insult. But the mission mostly serves as a set-up, with the chapters itself being more slice-of-life. Most of the individual stories are the result of coincidence rather than a pre-conceived plan. (Keep in mind that nobody but Twilight is even supposed to know about the mission, so it's basically kids being kids with an adult watching and plotting from the sidelines.)

Yozakura could easily do the same thing, use "The family has enemies" as a background motivation to introduce different kinds of villains and plots, but for some reason they've been stuck on the 'romantic rival' angle for a while now...

I remember when Jump Force was relevant and when Bandai Namco were announcing characters, many people requested Natsu from Fairy Tail or Meliodas from Seven Deadly Sins to be in there, despite the fact those are Weekly Shonen Magazine manga.

Following Jump, Magazine, Sunday, and Champion, it's surprising just how much they differ in tone.

I didn't "follow" champion or sunday back then and I still knew what was from what company.

Rn I only read 3 manga from magazine, 3 from Champion and 12 from jump (weekly)

So Jump Festa is in 2-3 days (depending in which timezone is everyone), what expectations/hopes/wishes you all have for this year?

Personally I hope we get the trailer of the Kimetsu movie with a confirmation date, the same with the Gintama movie or atleast a glimpse that they still havent forgotten of it.
Hope that MAPPA isnt the studio for Jujutsu Kaisen.
Act Age anime announcement. (I know they dont do this in Festa, but a man can dream)

Hoping for Act-age and Gintama movie stuff too.

Beyond that I guess i'd be cool to get some VA announcements for the Tsukasa Empire characters? Seems to early for that seeing as we don't have a release date for season 2 though.

Issue 4-5 is this week. No issue next week.
Ah I see, I thought the break was in this week. Great.

Same. Those crossovers really shows this. Which is why I like this space here on mangahelpers since people here know very well about magazines in general, it's one of the best place to talk about in this and other aspects.

Also, yeah, reading those four magazines and its titles you can really see how they are different, not only in tone but in what you can and cannot do, or what are the dominant genres. Something that I mentioned before but I'll do it again is that in WSJ you can't have sex scenes, but in Shonen Magazine you have works like Kimi no Iru Machi, Good Ending and Domekano with many sex scenes. Nothing too much visible of course, but we see and know that it is happening.

Same thing of Beastars and Mahou Shoujo Site existing on Shonen Champion, which even Nakano admitted for Beastars that it likely wouldn't be accepted there. So yeah, manga is very dependent on the publication it is and the demographic the magazine targets, which is why they should be more talked about in the discussions in the internet outside of just WSJ but unfortunately it's not how it works, as we know and it frustrates me a bit tbh. Not from here ofc, I say in general on twitter, youtube and other places.

From what I can understand, this is the modern division between the four kings:
  • Jump: "Attractiveness of character", basically the most actively mainstream.
  • Magazine: Individuality of creators.
  • Sunday: Comedy and romance, generally very laid back.
  • Champion: Basically Jump but "Indie", if that makes sense.
