Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Highly doubt Kubo will be back. The more plausible one will be Shimabu.

And if it is indeed a big author, WSJ might be trying to opposite strategy of what they did with S8. Drop a surprise serialization and have people talk about it because of the surprise. No unnecessary built up expectations or anything.
actually curious of how S8 would have faired had they done this now that I read this.

People want burn the witch to serialize because it takes place in bleach universe, in fact it is the western branch of SS

something something ichigo cameo

Fan expectations can be a big positive and a bigger negative (just look at Star Wars). I really do think S8 might have fared better had they not been hyping it up for 2 years. But I guess we will never know.
Can't really fault WSJ tho. It was the return of one of their biggest mangaka. So they probably assumed that hype alone would've carried the series.

Maybe some people do, but for me, it was a few different things. Interestingly designed mythical creatures, multiple main character waifus, a cute and quirky doggo, and the Power of Friendship™

I think part of the problem of Samurai 8 is that they tried to hype it as Kishi finally coming back after 5 years away except we already had Bort running the whole time. There wasn't really a big gap for people to start missing Kishi (and hence get hyped for his big return) because he was still sort-of in the magazine for that whole gap with a series that wasn't very good. Yeah Bort isn't entirely by Kishimoto but neither is Samurai 8.

So (to me at least) Samurai 8 didn't feel like Kishimoto's brand new series after half a decade away from the spotlight, it felt like 'oh here's Bort 2, but without the world I care about to hold up the boring bits'. I really enjoyed Naruto's last arc, I thought all the Kaguya stuff was a cool way to end the series, but by the time Samurai 8 came out I was already tired of Naruto spin-offs that keep upping the scale of the battles without a reason for it beyond trying to be bigger than Naruto's final arc.

Now if Shimabukuro or Kubo or whoever returned I'd be excited, they've actually been away for a while so there's been time to get hyped for a return. I doubt Kubo will every come back properly though, I can see him doing more oneshots or a mini-series in WSJ like Kazuki with The Comiq (or possibly a monthly manga in SQ or Plus) but definitely not a weekly manga. I don't think he'd want to deal with the health issues again.

Implying that people weren't hyped about Samurai 8 or Kishi returning? that's something new, i guess the months and months of discussions about everything regarding it before even started is a clear sign that people weren't hyped at all kkkkk

So, I checked with a JP friend of mine, and she told me that UxU actually did get quite a bit of buzz online when it came out. So that probably explains why its already been greenlit.

People were talking about S8, yes, but there was absolutely the unconscious effect that Boruto's existence (and the other Naruto material as well) took away much of the impact. Once S8 debuted, the point of what Kishimoto was going to do with the series was neutered because many could already see the parerells to Naruto, and we...kinda still have Naruto.

If you people want to call the manga bad, boring or whatever, fine, it's a personal opinion and etc, but don't come now, after everything trying to imply that when the manga was announced, people weren't hyped for whatever excuses because this is a lie, people were hyped, talking and speculating about it for months and months.

I think they just assumed it would be good.

Like, I'm not even a big fan of Naruto, but even I can tell it's a lot more accessible and engaging from the start. If S8 had been on par with its predecessor, it wouldn't have needed a hype to carry it.

I think people are trying to understand the sales of S8.

If people were extremely hyped with S8, the sales of the first volumes would be higher.

Although I guess it is possible most of the hype had died for the time the Volumes were released.

Are we going to have another 200 pages "discussion" about S8 now?
Now that you mention it, it's kind of funny how Samurai 8 discussion has fell off a cliff the past few weeks when it single-handedly propelled the previous thread far past 1000 pages

Shall we do a top 5 WSJ manga of the decade?

I know it's not being serialized now but this was an interesting video about Hiryouki Takei (Shaman King mangaka) he talks about his time as an assistant (to Watsuki creator of Rurouni Kenshin, alongside other mangaka such as Eiichiro Oda creator of One Piece)..I think a lot of you will enjoy :)
