Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Food War chapter 294 was released Jan 6th, 2019
Same thing with Dr Stone chapter 89, Kimetsu 141, TPN 118 + other WSJ series.

So literally the exact same thing this year.

oh the next chapter would be on the 20th if it's the exact same thing, then the on the 27th it's the normal schedule
yeah but jump #6/7 was out on the 6/7 last year...

jump #6/7 is out on 3/4 this year another crack theory is that SOMEONE decided to use 2019 calendar instead of 2020 lol
this will also affect SQ chapters
and M+ chapters

although, we know for a fact that it will be back to normal thanks(?) to dr. stone sudden break

*note: last is 2019, this is 2020, semantics but eh

since they're scheduled Monday at midnight JST rather than the usual time on Sunday I assume it's not a mistake. I wish they would say why there's a delay though.

most likely not a mistake

they have that date everywhere

at the end of pages, in the viz schedule, on the viz app (count the days), on mangaplus(both on the series page and the end of the last chapter)
(fun fact, depending on the DST[fuck you for existing] it will out the same time as old viz schedule)

I don't really mind the delay, since it won't affect me at all, especially since we know it should be a one time thing...

I just hate the fact that 0 communication, from everyone, and everyone just ignore when asked

How can we be assured the issue delay is even real? Mangani said himself that we could just be misremembering a calendar.
if it is just a mistake...

it would either mean, single point of failure and/or chain of incompetence

which is... well... :derp

I have to wonder if Yuuna would be doing better in our polls if M+ covered it.

To the people who read it, would you say it deserves the constant bottom placements?
No, it doesn't really deserve constant bottom placements. It's not high art or anything but it's a reasonably mid-tier series that tends to get underrated for it's ecchi/SoL aspects. People tend to say that nothing happens, or that it's just ecchi/SoL, and ignore things like how much time has explicitly passed during the series, that there have been several arcs including a few battle arcs, there were some major revelations about the hero and heroine, and a few characters have had some noticable character development. People say that it can end anytime, while ignoring that it'd need an arc or two to wrap up loose plot threads in a decent manner. Granted not long arcs, as this is a series where arcs seldom get to the double digits, but arcs nonetheless. And so on. All in all I'd say it's mildly underrated.

New question I'm thinking over, what do you guys think is better for a manga, be written so that it is accepted by the mainstream readership, or written as a pure expression of the author?

Second. Not to say author vision can not ruin the series ( it can very easily ) but truth to be told mainstream readership ( just like any other form of audience ) doesnt really know what they want.

I think both are important but sometimes better to manga not try becoming so mainstream like One Piece or Naruto and find their own niche. Chainsawman is 'dark' but is fine with his niche. Act-Age is manga about acting topic with isn't that popular like battle shonen and finded their own niche. Plus AoT is one of most manstream anime this decade and WSJ said that not suited to their magazine (WSJ not taked the risk, so competition have AoT money).

Those aren't mutually exclusive though. What if the author's vision is something that would easily be accepted by mainstream audiences?

Even then we can't really lump series into a massive category like that. Stuff like Samurai 8 was Kishimoto's vision but Boruto was probably written to appeal to mainstream audiences and would anyone here honestly be able to immediately say which of those two they prefer?

Unless you're reading exclusively self published stuff or 2nd series from huge authors everything is probably altered by the editors in some way (as we learned with Naruto potentially quite a bit) in order to appeal more mainstream so I doubt many people even read series that are "pure expression of the author", certainly not in Shonen Jump.

That's a question that can't get definitive answer. It all comes down to luck weather one of those 2 options will work out

Depends. Do you want to be published in Jump? Then you're gonna have to keep your audience in mind (it doesn't need to be totally mainstream, but there has to be AN audience). That doesn't mean you have to abandon the story you intended to write, but you need to consider how your manga will come across to the readers.

You wanna make art for the art, without any supervision or outside involvement? Then find some way to publish independently and go wild. Just don't expect to be able to live from it, because (unless you're incredibly lucky) chances are it's not gonna work out.

Boruto, no question. It's on par with Naruto for me.

Samurai 8 puts me to sleep.

It's fine to like Boruto, saying it's on par with Naruto is not fine. Biggest insult in 2019

You must have a great life if your biggest problem is people liking stuff that you don't.
Like, where did I make it seem like I had a genuine issue. What i said shouldn't have brought you to that conclusion come on

Sarcasm is hard when you don't know the other person.

And too many people on the internet who say such things for real.

Tadahiro Miura is such an underrated artist. Perhaps if he did a straight up battle shonen, maybe then more people will realize.

Miura is fantastic. I'm a big fan of him since the previous manga where he was only artist.

Btw, I saw someone saying that there's a difference between gag manga and comedy manga, so what it is? Can someone cite examples from WSJ and non-WSJ manga?

I gave the example of gaga being something like Dr.Slup and Gintama and comedy being like Grand Blue.

Gag to me is more one-off stuff barely connected that's mostly just jokes. Typically in 4koma format but not always.
Comedy is more connected but still has more of a focus on being funny with story progression and character development still happening just not a focus.
