I assume you meant Jump is a brand, not shueisha.

I dont think anything deserves an anime in any case - sales are possibly a factor in a series getting an anime but its not always the case, just look at the some of the series that get anime be it manga, light novel or others stuff.

I would like to see some series specific series animated but talking about deserving is a bit too much at least for me. If its your personal desire to see something animated and you can argue through sales that it somehow needs to be animated seems decent, but keep in mind that manga and anime audiences are not the necessarily the same.

I am not comparing Shogakukan to Kodansha or Shueisha. I don't think expecting an anime for almost every series in magazine (like jump or magazine) is realistic or doing that would be smart. Series like Komi-san and Ao Ashi is kinda different though, they're very big hits for their perspective magazines and they could get so much bigger with an anime. While that's not certain to happen, I think they deserve a chance. Maybe those series not getting an anime isn't because of lack of try from Shogakukan. Still, that doesn't make it any less frustrating.

Yes, lack of anime for Shogakukan series is not a recent thing (I think). But is there another case like Komi-san in the last 10 years or so? All the other series I can think of at least got a try (like Magi, Dagashi Kashi, etc.). Though you could say that it's evidence that the series is the problem. I fail to see it why, but it could be.

They aren't even late with Ao Ashi, anyway. For all we know, they could announce one in the following months.

How can I say it, I don't know why things like this or how can things can better for Sunday and I am not even blaming them. But Shogakukan is really disappointing when it comes to Anime adaptations. Even if it's just because you won't see your favorite series in anime format. Maybe it is normal for Sunday and we should just accept it. Again that doesn't change the fact that it is disappointing.
Yeah I share your disappointment and frustration. I don't think you're wrong at all --I just get a little bothered when the blame is shifted totally onto Shogakukan when we know that it's not (only) their decision to make a anime. I wish they would get more of a fair shake but there are lots of walls staked up against them. Though at the same time I don't know either --maybe they are refusing anime adaptions for some reason. Thing is, I find that highly unlikely since they'd surely benefit from them. I don't think the series are the issue (too much) but again we have to look at the last few Sunday anime that have been produced haven't exactly been huge hits. Like I said, Dagashi got two anime and that didn't really move the needle much.

Again I'm not saying anyone is wrong to be frustrated --I'm frustrated. I'd love to see a Komi, Birdmen and Be Blues anime announcement soon. I want to see Shougakukan do better. I don't know why they seem to have the hardest time in getting anime adaptions but I can only assume it's not because they don't want them.

Ah yeah that's what I meant, lol. Thanks for the correction. I do agree with what you're saying too --we can want an anime adaption badly but there are factors that go into that decision that we aren't privy to. There are series that sell really well and never get one for various reasons and ones that sell badly and get one anyway. Like most businesses anime is a risk/gain thing but sometimes some decisions are made on the simple fact that one can and does, even when it makes no sense to anyone else. We have some say in this matter by supporting what we want to see adapted but at the end of the day it's merely one factor that goes into the decision making process moreso than the final conclusion.

What's it about?
A girl, Yumesaki, is empowered by “god” with different abilities to test if they’re suitable for saving the world from an unbelievably big meteor. Mostly it’s her and cat-eyed boy Mito having the powers get them into cute situations. It’s like a soft gag manga.

Ponkotsu-chan Kenshochu is the full title. I like it as “Investigating with Ponkotsu-chan” for the title, but the untranslated title is the one that stuck

It’s a big part of why I put in the time with reading Japanese myself. I mean that and stepping away from piracy completely, but it was so frustrating seeing Sunday (and my one true love, Grand Jump) go ignored by so many.

Yeah I know what you mean. I actually just read of bunch of Yukosae in Spanish yesterday because the English translation sadly died out. While the first few chapters didn't sell me on the premise, the series became much more interesting once the supporting cast started being introduced.

Really good start for Yofukashi, and I hope it grows from there. The story is really interesting, and the artwork maintains that special touch the author does so well. MAO seems to be doing nicely too, as does Maiko-san. In fact, has Maiko-san's sales been improving lately? On the other hand, have Evans' sales really dropped lately? It seems like it has really declined from what I'm remembering. For Yukosae, is this the same or a decline in sales?

September 2019: 150,000
December 2019: 250,000

It seems like reprints Switch got was a lot more significant than I thought. 100,000 increase in a few months is pretty decent for a series that doesn't even reach 10k before dropping out of weekly list.

Some previous volume info:
Maiko
v11 - 2019/09 - 25,324 (04)
v12 - 2019/12 - 25,370 (04)

Evans
v01 - 2017/09 - 5,306 (03) | 10,879 (10) | 13,682 (17)
v05 - 2018/09 - 9,667 (06) | 12,947 (13)
v09 - 2019/09 - 5,418 (05) | 7,785 (12)
v10 - 2019/12 - 4,561 (05)

Yuko Sae Tatakaeba
v01 - 2019/09 - 3,588 (05)
v02 - 2019/12 - 2,838 (05)

So Maiko-san is doing pretty similar to the last volume, it's not really growing at the moment. Though it's higher than previous 10 volumes.

Evan's has been dropping in sales a lot lately and it doesn't show any sign of stabilizing. Maybe not now, but it can be in danger later in the year.

Yuko Sae Tatakaeba and Nokemono-tachi no Yoru, I guess they're not doing that bad and it's not impossible for them to turn things around. But I think it's very unlikely. Who knows how long they're going to last though? I could see them lasting as long as Go-fun, Fire Rabbit or ending as soon as Undine. Nothing would surprise me with Sunday nowadays. They could even last as long as Daiku.

Dang, Evans is really tumbling there. Sad to see that Evans was never really able to take off. I'm a bit surprised that the editors have basically been leaving Switch as an almost perma-bottom series when it is actually selling quite nicely behind the scenes. At the very least, I'm glad that it seems safe for the time being. I'm bummed about Yukosae though since the series is more charming than I originally gave it credit for.

For those curious about the whereabouts of a couple of recently-ended Sunday superstars: the author of Marry Grave just released a oneshot he did on his Twitter. Seems like he isn't letting anything get him down, and I'm still a big fan of his art style. Hopefully he'll come back somewhere soon, even if it doesn't end up being WSS.

On the other hand, the authors behind Gofun and Memesis have both turned to the doujin scene for the time being. I can see the author of Gofun getting back in the game at some point, but I'm curious to see what'll become of Memesis' author. His art style was interesting, but I think he needs a bit of work as an author in order for his work to catch on

That oneshot is actually one he did way back in like 2012? It hasn't been reprinted anywhere so I assume he just decided to upload it himself. It's the one that won him the first place prize in a Shougakukan Rookies competition. It was on Club Sunday for a while before it went defunct. Fukuda has already mentioned working on something else --granted I don't know if it's for WSS or not, but he's back on the scene. Yagyuu on the other hand I heard went into doing ******. Which his work in Memesis sort of leaned toward sometimes so I'm not particularly surprised. He did draw an illustration for Webry's newbie competition so I figure he's not too far away from Shoggy should he want to return.

I guess it's not really news or anything, but at least something a little bit interesting. Looks like the author of Ping Kong is an old friend of the author of WSJ's Mitama Security. Looks like Comic Jackson has friends in quite a few places!

Final retrospective of 2019

Big shoutout to @Aipom626 for their info, @seth2834 for the sales numbers and everyone here for reading. I dunno if I started the whole "Blog/twitter dedicated to one magazine" thing, but I certainly wouldn't have gotten this far without everyone here and for that I'm grateful. Here's hoping for bigger and better things in 2020 for Sunday and all of us.

PS have this thread on twitter of New Years art, and may you have a safe and happy 2020.
