Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

The spokon matter is the bit that interests me the most, actually. Unlike romance manga, which have continued to find new success every year more or less, sports manga, from my perspective at least, stagnated massively in the 2010s. Besides Haikyu, the only series in the genre which seemed to take off successfully are smaller successes like Hinomaru, Hanebad, Ao Ashi, Blue Lock and one or two others. Unless Jump gets really lucky, we could end up looking at a situation where they end up without a spokon period come next year.

Seriously, anyone know why the stagnation happened? It's really puzzling me.

oh boy, first you claim gag genre is dead and now sport genre is also dead?

"Besides Haikyu, the only series in the genre which seemed to take off successfully are smaller successes like Hinomaru, Hanebad, Ao Ashi, Blue Lock and one or two others "
2010s success off the top of my head: Asahinagu, Dumbbell Nan Killometer, Toppu GP, Shogi senpai, Days, Mix, Boukyaku Battery, Ballroom e Youkoso, Harigane Service, All Out, everything by Fukumoto etc
not counting Tsubasa, Major, KnB, Haikyuu, Yowamushi, Days, Whistle, Sangatsu no Lion, Play Ball etc spinoffs and sequels
and not counting anime originals like Yuri on Ice, Free, Run with the Wind

I like how you started the post by "from my perspective" but ended it with "why the stagnation happened?" :facepalm

Besides Days (which is on me), most of those titles you list are either based in subtypes, fairly obscure, a continuation to something else, or not sports manga at all (why're you mentioning Fukumoto of all people?)

And, in a way, you're proving my point. Besides Haikyu, the 2010s was very sparse in sports manga which were able to garner momentum in of themselves. It's all various little series, some notable, others far less.

man i knew you will give me "this doesn't count because i'm moving the goal post" you pulled the same "counter argument" when we talked about gag
everything in my list volumes makes oricon top 50, nominated or won awards, not really obscure

and Fukumoto does mahjong manga which is a mindsport

I don't read every single manga so this is not a full list of every sport manga ever
and I don't see how sport manga were treated differently this past decade than any other decade

People should lay off Togashi. Back pain is serious and excruciating. It also never really goes away once it starts. I'm an artist with a spinal injury and while I'm still passionate about creating there's no way I could work on something like a weekly serialization, even just writing given how much sitting and neck craning is involved. We should be happy with what we get when we get it. Togashi doesn't owe us anything. He is the one giving us the gift of his art after all.

If Days count, I don't understand way you mention Ao Ashi in the same breath as the others, since it sells way more than Hinomaru, Blue Lock and Hanebado. Mix also sells a ton, and I don't think it being technically a sequel has much to do with it.

Anyway, I think the thing is... many of the series that were popular last decade are still not over, which probably takes up a lot of space for new series to actually grow. But most magazines I can think of have a sports series very well-established in its line-up.

The sport genre stagnated in the 2010's? really? because what i saw was a big "boom" in the sport genre with the anime for Kuroko no Basket, and together with Haikyuu sport series made a big come back to the mainstream opening the door for so many new popular sport series, in all these years i read so many people saying they never liked or were interested in sports before series like Kuroko and Haikyuu but started to enjoy the genre.

Haikyuu is still the only sports anime/manga that I like.

That and hanebado.

Don't recall enjoying any others

Pretty sure KnB is still the top selling anime in DVD/BD of not just this decade but also all time for WSJ series.

We'll get our next sports hit once Tosh gives us his spin on Keijo :cheez

I hope HxH absent is not related to its author's health
my theory is last year hiatus is probably is due to the 20 chapters he did the year before
they probably wanted to publish 1 batch in 2018 and one batch in 2019
but ended up publishing both in 2018 and nothing in 2019 for whatever reason & he will return with a new batch this year

this is my wish anyway.

In his last comment on 2018 he said he already had the storyboard for the next 10 chapters done and after that he just disappear for the whole 2019 kkkkk, if he was like that time complaining every week about dying in pain and etc, but he looks healthy and fit since 2018, so i don't know what is going on, i just wish that maybe he compensates the long time with another 20 chapters.

Personally, I'd enjoy seeing a highly experimental sport series. Something obscure.

Like, maybe it's not a sport, but a parkour series would be awesome, depending on how the art is depicted, could be amazing.

Or a series where the MC tries several different "extreme" sports, like skateboarding (if it counts), or snowboarding, etc. That way the series is always evolving, and admittedly it would be a gimmick, but it could maybe work.

The "extreme sports" series idea is a pretty cool one, but I also honestly think a series that's just about skateboarding has a whole lot of potential. It's a popular sport in Japan, and it's debuting as an Olympic sport in the Tokyo Summer Olympics this year, so a WSJ series launch could get a lot of attention if timed correctly. On top of that, skateboarding could look really incredible in a manga format with the right artist. I'd really love to see the concept given a shot this year, or alternately another Tokyo Olympics debut like sport climbing or surfing. I think a series focusing on any of those could feel really fun and unique.

I agree there, but a part of me feels that Jump would want a more "mainstream" sport to represent the Olympic hype. Obviously there's good potential in a lot of those professions for a manga (I mean, one of Jump SQ's most beloved series is about playing the freaking koto), but it's hardly the sort of thing which generates hype.

Run with the Wind and Free aren't original. The first is based on a novel, the second is a light novel.

Spokon is dead? What is Ace of Diamond II? Wha is Major 2nd? What is Blue Lock? Rain, you know there is life outside Shonen Jump, isn't it? (That also goes to the thing that I've seen you commenting general manga stuff in this thread instead for example the General manga thread we have in this same subforum)

PD: If next thing becomes the "romcoms are dead because 5toubun and WNL are ending" I shall remind that Miki Yoshikawa is serializing Cuckoo's Fiancee in 2020 (in late January), but that is a WSM thing, so it doesn't belong here.

PD2: Manmoo, I don't consider Shogi Senpai a spokon. Is a slice of life with some potential romcom stuff but it isn't spokon. Again, is a WSM thing.

PD3: Re-reading the posts in page 176, I find myself being the first one to have mentioned Ace of Diamond II. I-it hurts ;_; (I find AoD more enjoyable than Haikyuu or Kuroko and I consider Sawamura being a better lead than Hinata. But for third time, is a WSM thing).

So, remember that chart Raf created? Someone did a clean calculation of all the increases.

Also, dunno how important this is, but the folks on ANN have found the chart. Score for the community, I guess?

Just goes to show, I've seen people posting that EU commission study of piracy being beneficial to movies and games, but we've got definitive proof here of it actively harming this industry. Early leaks were absolutely hurting the Manga+ audience.
