[Aeneas]

Started reading Hikaru no Go (about a third of the way through), and it's becoming one of my favorites.

A shame Hotta wasn't able to get another long series going. I saw that little speed skating one that didn't take off. Hope the magazine can get another Go (or finally a shogi) hit someday.

Yeah, about that... what happened to Hotta anyway? Does anyone know??

She's basically retired. Woman is already in her 60s.

60s is honestly nothing considering how many mangaka are still active on that age. Rumiko Takahashi has almost that I think XD

Huh, I know I do know Hikaru No Go did very well but how were the sales? Enough to live off the royalties and what not?

Lmao it's still going, I guess the backlog will just shoot up again after the reprints.

So what do we even expect for volume 19 at this point? First print of 2 mln?

[supercow297]

never, unless Japan jump actually does it first (which is moot point, since that just shift the cycle, unless digital first)

which is why I have a theory that Japanese Jump is switching to a midnight schedule starting this year.

They did it for #6/7 but that was a Saturday release, which had a history of releasing on midnight

There is a series exactly like that running in a different magazine, FYI.

As for the space epic idea, I'm always down. I wouldn't mind if S8 improved on it some more, even. It has the potential to scratch that itch, but hasn't really gone anywhere with it yet. Since Toriko's last chapter, it's always been something I've craved.

Yeah, rereading Toriko now I really fucking wish it was 700 chapters with a space arc, holy shit that would have been amazing, best scaling in terms of powers, organizations, characters, fights I've seen in Jump period. And it's actually relatively a complex plot, by that I mean it's not straightforward but has lots of small twists and turns. Current Jump really is in dire need of more of those.

Lacking what? Current Jump is perfectly fine in that regard.

Lacking what? Current Jump is perfectly fine in that regard.

I disagree. A large majority of the current lineup has stories that are quite simple in terms of plot developments. It seems we are heading towards either more character focused stories or simply smaller casts in general with some of the newer successes, but regardless I would say complexity has gone down overall.
Heck, I haven't seen even a power system as well outlined as Naruto's in quite a while. World Trigger and that's all I can recall right now.

[Aeneas]

Huh, I know I do know Hikaru No Go did very well but how were the sales? Enough to live off the royalties and what not?

Hopefully! Looks like the last manga-related thing she did was this little project (with her husband as a character, who's also a mangaka) in 2013 trying to get more people into drawing manga. And she features their artwork, from what I can tell.

The covers are so cool and the circle is really a cool idea. I just wish I cared about the characters because the fighting is nice.

Jump still has One Piece. Black Clover, MHA, Chainsaw man and jujutsu kaisen all have plots that aren't exactly straight forward. I think that's more than enough.

[Rain Spectre]

I'd also contest on calling Toriko's plot "complex". The series that a massive amount of lore, but the characters and general direction of the series are very simple.

[Blink22]

Maybe Zipman if it survives will give us those space battles in the future

[Mammo]

No way would Jump pick up such a manga if it was a new mangaka.

U19 says hi

I've said it before, but I'd really like if Kubo returned with a new battle series where the clothes facilitate the battles. Kinda like Kill la Kill, I guess.

here a oneshot from last week by someone who was either a Kubo's assistant or inspired by Kubo (their art is pretty similar) which is pretty close to what you described (closer to Chainsawman than KLK)

高校生の少年、九鳥 恋（くのとり れん）はある少女に恋をして――･･･　一話は過去作ですが、反応もらえたのが嬉しくて続けてしまいました！書き溜めはないので不定期更新です！

btw, Jump Plus decide what manga to publish from Jump rookie based of the views, if it finished in top 10 during the month it was published in there's a chance they will publish it
currently this oneshot is number 11, so if you want to support its chances of serialization you better start spamming views & likes
