So the chapter is already completed?
the chapter that is published in the magazine has already been made at least 2 weeks in advance
Viz translator talked about it in the past of receiving the manuscript 2-3 weeks in advance so they can start translating, and i think one of the Jump editor mentioned it too

I think in Bakuman it mentioned the first 3 or 4 chapters being complete before publication starts but I can't remember 100%

Yeah, those chapters aren't delivered in the same week they are done, except in exceptional cases when the situation is so fucked. But overall there's a difference in time.

You know, I've been one to defend S8 in the past, and also remain optimistic with it's chances. However, this latest chapter really does seem like a death knell.

I feel it's way too early for that kind of information to get revealed. That's the kind of info you reveal several years into a series, not within the first year.

They really might have told Kishi to wrap it up within X number of chapters.

Yep. Remember Saiyuki? Remember how, when the call for cancellation came, the series turned into a giant exposition dump in order to reveal all the things that were planned?

If the series is actually moving towards cancellation, than that would be... incredible, for lack of a better term.

I originally thought that even if S8 massively underperformed, it was still selling well enough to at least survive, but... then I realized that volume sales were decreasing. And while I knew that veterans have returned with series that got axed after massive hits, I thought that Kishimoto’s name would be too big to fail. But the series sold about half what Robot x Laserbeam initially did, IIRC, before the decrease.

With recent information, now I’m honestly starting to believe that Samurai 8 may not even survive the year - especially if one or more of the 7 series after it prove to be successful.

Preview of Issue #10 of 2020 (HQ)

I’m still kind of hyped for this, hopefully it’s better than the other two new series.

... I'm still sad about it, the reveals were honestly really interesting, I would've loved to see them properly presented.

Personally, S8 has been bad since the beginning. At some point I thought it was on its way to become better but it's just plain boring and more complex than it's necessary. This last chapter was just a pain in the ass to read. If it gets canned before Kishimoto's planned 10 volumes, I wouldn't be surprised.

That's not the way I would categorize it. To me, this is deeply saddening. I WANT more veterans to return.

However, if I were a veteran, I'd take notice of the fact that the last... four (I think?) new veteran series in Jump have been cancelled.

Why risk tarnishing my legacy? This one probably really hurts Kishi, because he felt that this series was honestly better than Naruto was. He even talked about how he gets more exercise now and that in turn helped him think up better ideas.

S8 has a lot of faults, and I mean A LOT. But I still enjoy it, and enjoy seeing a lot of the creativity Kishimoto had to show off. I genuinely believe that there’s a story better than Naruto somewhere within it, which was his goal. I like the world he created, the character designs, the art, the powers, etc. but it just needed better pacing, and better organization.

As much as I get annoyed with blind S8 fans, part of me was hoping the would hold out and give it a 13 episode season of an anime or something to see if that would help(and part of me is still holding on to that, but we’ll see).

If it is cancelled though, I hope Kishimoto doesn’t become embarrassed, or lose the will to try another series. If not in Jump, but Jump+ maybe, where there is way less pressure.

He will, though. Kishi put his all into this series. I also think this will impact Jump negatively with future veterans returning.

I definitely don't mean incredible in a good way at all, I think I found a better word... unbelievable. Like, I really thought that Samurai 8 was going to survive, even if it flopped, because it was doing just enough to survive, but it might not even do that anymore. I thought Kishimoto would've command a bigger audience, considering Naruto's massive success.

And yeah, it also really sucks to see veterans behind series you've grown attached to not return, or return only to get axed.

Kishimoto or not, people aren't going to buy volumes of something that they don't think is good. It's really simple as that. The first chapter was everywhere and they advertised it hard, people knew about it, they just weren't interested.

Also I wouldn't take Kishimoto thinking it is "better than naruto" as much of anything, IIRC samurai 8 has a lot of ideas he already wanted to put into naruto at the time but were canned by the editor. Turns out the editor was right all along.

I really don't think it says much about WSJ if they axe it, they gave it a good treatment, they pushed it from day 1. But they can't make it sell if it isn't liked.

What I'm saying is, no veteran is going to receive similar treatment as Kishi did, aside from Oda or Toriyama. If even Kishi can't survive on his name, none of the lesser veterans (not lesser quality, but with series less popular than Naruto was) will either.

Take Shimabu or Kubo for example. If they're paying attention to Jump right now, they'd notice that it's a bloodbath for veterans.

And it's not just Kishi this is happening to. If I was a returning veteran, I'd steer clear from WSJ.

Call me unsympathetic, but I can't feel truly "sorry" for Kishimoto because he knew full in that many of the concepts and storytelling in the series would be hard to grasp at best for readers, but still went through with it under the belief that his name value would protect him until it "got good" (infamously comparing it to eating squid). Ultimitely, the thing which did Kishimoto in was his belief that he was basically invincible due to Naruto, nothing else.

Exactly. I think people really are forgetting that Jump did everything in their power to back S8 up. They gave it probably the biggest amount of advertising for a new manga in industry history, with the Festa promo video, billboards all across Shibuya and the Yamanobe line, and an interview in the Yomiuri Shimbun , and yet the series still failed to meet expectations by major margin. Even when it began running, Jump placed it in the May promo video when Chainsaw Man didn't despite strong sales, and got an LCP with Chapter 12. Jump was incredibly kind to Kishimoto, and yet they got basically nothing in return.

....Last time I checked, you can't make a "headcanon" of reality.

There is no headcanon, you can confirm for yourself that stuff like Sasuke, the genin tournament as well as it being interrupted by Orochimaru etc. are the editor's suggestions.

How about living because people like your manga instead? Like, was S8 going to do better anywhere else?

maybe u cant know what the editor's job and writer. editor telling to change 3rd hokage to human didn't stopped him to create Kisame. At the time even bleach and one piece all had animal character. so what your point of linking dharuma being cat is failure of s8 editor and Kishi inability to write naruto.
if editor was behind the success of naurto why didn't jump made that editor to make a series of his own?

Forget about Kishi for a moment. The last few veterans that came back all failed as well.

Were all of them just bad and deserved to get cancelled? You can make the argument that only good series survive, but that's not true, and is kinda naive to suggest. It's not that black and white.

Because. Editors. Are. Not. Writers.

Delivered to you by an aspiring writer.

Weeeeellll, if we look at the veteran returns in the last three years, Inagaki actually succeded with Dr Stone, Fujimaki was actually looking good with Robot until things blew up in his face, Tamura basically had no real strong ideas, and Shiibashi...well, Yui Kamio was Yui Kamio.

Not a great track record, but not that terrible either.
