Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

With the Netflix news of OP being announced, question for everyone.

Which WSJ series do you think lends itself best to a live-action Hollywood adaptation?
The Promised Neverland definitely. Give it to Del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, Hellboy).
Death Note desperately needs a remake at some point. It's western live action movie was one of the worst and most baffling adaptations I've ever seen.

I'm sure My Hero Academia will get one eventually.

Good times with the whole discussion with Sharkbait saying Illegal Rare would fail because Shonen Jump readers didn't wanted dark series, how the times changed kkkk
I remember being so irritated at that argument, because Illegal Rare only had an edgy aesthetic. The actual series was so whimsical, and full of Beelzebub esque comedy, yet also could get super serious and had some great world-building. Sadly he was right in the sense that people judged it by its cover and just assumed it was a vampire edgefest.
One of my favorite cancelled series, and one that I do think would do a lot better if it was serialized now.

And yet Shiibashi ended up creating Yui Kamio. Oh my.

Would Psyren do better or worse now?
Better, I imagine. At the very least, Jump I imagine would be more active to promote it since the Big 3 + Gintama + Kuroko + Toriko + a lot of other stuff wouldn't be in the way.

By the way, what's the mangaka of Psyren doing currently?

I know he came out with another failed series in Jump a few years ago. Haven't heard much since.

Man, as a Nura fan I really wanted to give Yui Kamui the benefit of the doubt, but it was such a clusterfuck.
It felt like it was trying to do what Hungry Marie did (which I loved) but somehow do every single thing absolutely wrong.

He published a one shot on GIGA in 2017 and nothing more, also i just realised that Kagamigami is 5 years! Jesus...

But i think he will return yet, he has too much potential to not try again.

He did Kagamigami which debuted next to Black Clover.
Kagamigami was a much better series though imo. I have no idea how it got cancelled but Black Clover flourished.
Jump tried really hard to push it too, multiple color pages but it just wasn't able to gain a following.

He did a really mediocre one-shot in 2017 and hasn't been seen since.
However, depending on how Shueshia views Psyren, Kagamigami may have been his strike 3.

Well, shit. I guess he might have just given up on manga entirely. I would hope he'd try another magazine, at least.

Of course, he could just be using a pseudonym, and still making manga.

Also, it's worth noting that Disney now owns the film rights (both live-action, and animation) to Dragon Ball after their acquisition of Fox.
I really wouldn't be surprised if they tried to start a Dragon Ball cinematic universe to have another tent-pole franchise alongside Marvel and Star Wars.

I wouldn't mind, if they have the right people working on it. The MCU proves that you CAN have DB type fights on the big screen. I'm just not sure how accepting audiences would be of the overly Japanese aspects. They'd likely have to dial those aspects back.

Yeah, they'd dial those aspects back.
I'd like to see them really go out with alien creatures though. For example rather have Sayians look humanoid by default have them look entirely like apes (with Sayian armor).
Come up with a story like they gave you a fake skin which looks like the inhabitants of the planet they're sent to, to explain why Goku appears human. However the fake skin armor was damaged when landing hence why he has his tail exposed.

Age Goku up from the get-go to like a 16-17 year old at the start of the story (obviously still a baby when he lands on earth).
Have the first arc centered around the Red Ribbon Army (like the Path To Power movie). That way it will help future films when they go into the androids. Follow it up with a Piccolo movie, then like two movies for Sayians/Freiza. So on, so on. I'm fine with a lot of creative liberties because it's expected. All that matters to me is it's fun and the characters feel like the characters from the manga (even if toned down a bit).
I could really see it scratching that Marvel/Star Wars itch for western audiences if done right.

I honestly don't know what their plan was with Death Note. They literally just had to follow the same script as the manga with some tweaks but nah.

If MHA should get one, it should be now. The popularity wont go up anymore.

Also let's not forget, there is a Naruto live action being made.
Anyone knows what's happening with that?

He published a one shot on GIGA in 2017 and nothing more, also i just realised that Kagamigami is 5 years! Jesus...

Holy fuck, it's been 5 years since Kagamigami! I remember liking the first chapter to the point that I even sorta remember it.

He's basically asking his followers to brigade us. Some of them in his comments are openly attacking 101nemesis with racism.
When you have that much influence the rules get modified. He doesn't have a right to poke at us because his cult members will come here to attack us in the guise of defending dear leader.
Oh did they? I didnt bother checking his profile anymore since I had actual work and didnt want to give him the attention he was so badly seeking. His posts seem to be deleted now.
But I'm sure the people being racist were not even good at racism which is usually the case. If anything, they've just proven why I hate such "famous" youtubers and personalities.

Sad because they are Bleach fans and Bleach's MC (Ichigo) literally showed compassion for all beings irrespective of their race (Arrancar/Quincy/Shinigami/Human). That's probably the saddest part of this whole thing, that people such as them like Bleach.
Anyway, Buranchi sensei asked us to stop, so this would be my last comment on it.

Can a 16 volume series really count as a strike though? It probably wasn't the hit they wanted but considering it came out at a pretty competitive time and didn't even get an anime I don't think it did too badly.

Either way I'd expect WSJ to get more cutthroat in the near future. Too many big series ending with no hit on sight. I hope Witch Guardian is good though.

It was like they were trying to turn Death Note into a Donnie Darko for millennials.
Only they fell flat on their face but there was no floor so their body plummeted into a endless pit of horrible decisions and pretension.

The movie seriously felt like it was written by a very angsty 14 year old. One who only knows Death Note by name only.

This. This is exactly what I thought as I saw it.
They tried so hard to cater to an angsty crowd that it was so cringy.

Could be worse I guess. Could be dragonball evolution.

I mean, it was somewhat a success. However it was pretty much in the bottom for most of its run.
Yeah, Jump had tons of decade long runners going at the time, but the series despite its quality only managed to survive by having other new series do worse than it and get cancelled. Its future during its serialization was always on shaky ground.

Not gonna lie,
I unironcally find Dragon Ball Evolution kind of fun, but I'm a big fan of trashy movies.

Speaking of really bizarre trashy western adaptations of Jump manga.
This exists.

We can all cite DB: Evolution as the standard for terrible live action adaptations, but do recall that it literally led to AT coming out of retirement to create more DB anime movies.

And now look, the series is bigger than it's ever been. We owe DB:E some gratitude, I'd say.
