Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Great interview. I recommend everyone to read, even the ones who don't read or dislike Yunna. There's details about what an editor do in anime, what an editor does, how Miura works as a mangaka, what series can be on WSJ, etc

But here are some of the most interesting parts to me which are about the editors/editorial.

Now I have a couple of questions for the editors. For one, how do you usually work with a mangaka and what is the most interesting but also challenging part of this job?

Ikeda:
Miura-sensei already explained part of it: The editor consults with the mangaka about what should happen in the next chapter and gets the storyboard delivered to him. The editor corrects some things and writes down some comments when something is too hard to understand, so the mangaka can adjust it as needed – and then it’s basically up to the mangaka to finish the story.

The editor of course supports them however he can but soon it’s all about finishing that one chapter. Once the editor gets the finalized chapter, his actual work starts. He still has to pick a font for the text. There is of course a default font but particular funny scenes for example may require different ones. Or a very sexy scene might need different letters to convey that as well. And then there is of course the final check-up: Looking through it if there are any mistakes.

Afterwards the editor hands it off to be printed. It is a lot of fun to discuss upcoming chapters with a mangaka since most editors of course enjoy reading manga themselves. It is very interesting since you know that you help to develop the story. It’s a great feeling to see how a mangaka turns the things you discussed into something great. And I of course always look forward to reader feedback.

Kawashima: Depending on the mangaka's lifestyle the editor may have to adjust to it. There are many mangaka that prefer to draw at night. An editor sometimes has unusual work hours because of that and sometimes you just feel bad when you are asleep while your mangaka is still up drawing. And when something doesn’t turn out so great and you have to deal with less than positive reader feedback which can make you feel a bit embarassed.

How do you decide what is appropriate content for Shonen Jump?

Kawashima:
There is a conference in which they discuss what series will be picked up for the magazine and which might get cancelled. But in the end, it’s up to the readers to decide what fits Jump. We consider data like survey results in these conferences for example. You could say that there should be a "this belongs in Jump" definition – and there used to be something like that, but things have loosened up since then. A story like Yuuna and the Haunted Hot Springs that while being sexy also reads a lot like a shoujo manga and combines several different elements, might not have made the cut in the past. But nowadays, it’s more like “what the readers like, gets into Jump”. It doesn't have to be a pure-blooded shounen title as long as it's a good story.

Is there anything you would like to spotlight about your work at Jump that in your opinion deserves more attention?

Kawashima:
Manga editors are actually quite involved in anime adaptations. Usually much more than the mangaka. They have to proofread storyboards and see if everything is in order. When an anime is produced, it is up to the editor to make sure that the manga is honored und the best possible product is being made. If you watch an anime, you are guaranteed to find the name of the responsible manga editor somewhere in the credits. It’s quite funny but a manga editor also has to do the work of an anime editor.

Ikeda: It would be preferable if the mangaka could take care of that themselves, but they are of course rather busy since they have to continue working on the manga. That’s why the editor takes care of that. It’s quite the responsibility since the editor has to speak for the mangaka. It’s a lot of pressure.
Great interview! This one seems to have been done on the last AniMagic, which was 6 months ago, damn! Took a long time to show up there.

Review time! I've changed my criteria for more efficient and i removed One Piece review for reasons. This is what I'm going to do I will review 3 newcomer max but when there is a new manga, the oldest review will be removed so it will prevent for me to stack reviews even more. So let's begin.

Undead x Unlock chapter 3

First impression and thoughts:
Lots of actions right here and there. It's interesting to see Andy's regeneration abilities can use as a weapon and he is still naked throughout in this chapter. I wonder how Izumo felt to see his bottom you know and oh she's legal confirmed. Next chapter is Mother russia and vodka.

Manga Panels and Highlights: A panel where he use literally his Finger gun rated R version to destroy robot (RIP since Chapter 2 to 3)

Mashle: Magic and Muscles chapter 2

First impression and thoughts: Better than last chapter and i never been laugh out loud ever since Sket dance and Beelzebub ended. A new heroine arrive and i like mash did ignore her instead. That Lucci dude become professor Snape nice! Next chapter is Dumbledore debut.

Manga Panels and Highlights:
Mash foster dad and Brad coleman in terrible sneaky disguise panel! That is gold.

Guardian of the Witch chapter 1

First impression and thoughts:
Let's face it. Everybody's thinking that the very first 2 pages had Attack on titan vibes . Anyway the first half are my concerned that it looks cliche but the second half is already good. I really like Fafner because he is already mature in his own ways and let's see how he handle and developed the thing that he hated most are now his personal protection.

Manga Panels and Highlights: The City-state of Berne region map because Geography for me is everything. I'm surprised that it had a map in the very first chapter so that's rare and it could be potential had a world building.

There's something strangely funny about saying that Yuuna is like a shojo manga.

Whoa, good numbers for the newbiews. I was expecting for Mitama but not for Yozakura. Also, 2.5 Seduction up there makes me happy.

Yeesh, 2019 really was full of flops, huh?
There are a good amount of flops in Jump each year.

If Mitama or Yozakura are succesful, 2019 will be a good year. If both are succesfull, 2019 will be pretty succesful.

After all, Chainsaw Man is considered a manga of 2019 too.

I had figured Yozakura was dead but I guess maybe not, I suppose it has consistently ranked about S8 which the floppy 3 couldn't do, those three empty spaces padded the bottom enough that it looked like it was doing worse than it actually was.

I'm happy for Mitama and Yozakura. I'd be even happier if Kimetsu's wall wasn't meddling with chart positions, but ok.

Not really surprised by China going this far, but it is a bit ridiculous that they’re doing all of this over a fictional series.

And as I said before, I hate situations like this when someone is either begging or trying to force a apology out of you. Because those are the same communities that’ll also say “well you didn’t really mean it; it wasn’t sincere”, or “you’re not sorry, cause if you were you wouldn’t have done it in the the first place” when you actually do apologize.

At this point it’s just gaslighting Horikoshi

AoT, Black Butler, SAO, Death Note are all banned in China. This is really not a big deal.
Isn't China second biggest market for anime after Japan? I'm not big expert about anime in China so far as I know Bilibili is popular service with mostly younger users (teen, young adult). Dunno about how much revenue came from China/Bilibili but it's nothing to celebrated.

Ah, that's the chart I was expecting. Good ol' Kimetsu still being a nationwide sensation. Also, Hanako-kun seems to be getting a nice anime boost, I gotta watch that sometime!
It's a nice little series, it helps that the main duo is a wholesome ship too. It's too bad the possible endgame might be helping Hanako pass on peacefully.

Great interview. I recommend everyone to read, even the ones who don't read or dislike Yunna. There's details about what an editor do in anime, what an editor does, how Miura works as a mangaka, what series can be on WSJ, etc

This section is a bit eye-opening to me. So, I'm guessing when a mangaka works closely with the anime, the editors are the ones who do a lot of the work. That definitely puts more pressure on them than we initially thought, since they also have to manage the mangaka's health if their mangakas want a proactive role.

A new interview with the first editor of Kimetsu no Yaiba, Katayama, was released today.

From what I can TL the summary.
1) Gotouge draws names fast, taking up to 1-2 days only to complete (compared to Oda 3-4 days and Sorachi 4-5 days)
2) Gotouge and the editor revised the things through phone and electronic fax
3) Inspiration for the work is Jojo (breathing styles and the undead/ghost)
4) Gotouge is a principled writer. When he/she doesn't want to change anything, he/she will persist in that, but when not related to principled issues, he/she will change things modestly. Then goes to follow about an example that Goutouge changed a thing after a suggestion (citing it is not easy to grab readers in the early days)
5) Gotouge planned to give up on the mangaka work in case Kimetsu wasn't serialized during 2015.
6) Tanjirou's design came up as a suggestion that his design as an ordinary guy should counter the more strange characters later on
7) Gotouge loves Gintama, and the comedy bits are inspired by it
8) Gotouge does not work for his/her's enjoyment, but thinks about how to make the readers enjoy the manga
9) There is a rumor around that Kimetsu no Yaiba once didn't do well and was in a desperate situation, which was never true. In fact, the editor calls Kimetsu a "lottery win", which managed to get a Color Page for Chapter 7, suddenly decided out of nowhere because of the popularity.
10) Couldn't TL this, sorry
11) Kimetsu has never paid attention to the Jump slogan "Friendship, Effort, Victory". The editor has never used this as a standard. The standard of the work was whether it can make the readers to find it interesting, and that was all.

Isn't China second biggest market for anime after Japan? I'm not big expert about anime in China so far as I know Bilibili is popular service with mostly younger users (teen, young adult). Dunno about how much revenue came from China/Bilibili but it's nothing to celebrated.
Do you know that's illegal, rigth ?

There's something strangely funny about saying that Yuuna is like a shojo manga.

Kenta Matsuura (Tokyo Shinobi Squad) did Chainsaw art.
I kinda get what he's saying though. There are moments when the series focuses more on the character's thoughts than the ecchi. But out of all the Jump manga I feel like Yuuna is the one with the smallest female readership. Just a hot take though.

Always a pleasure to see more Chainsaw fanart.
