Out of the titles you mentioned only YYH, Slam Dunk, One Piece

Not even Rurouni Kenshin or HxH or... heck, even Naruto were on the level KnY is on right now (40million with 19 volumes which would put it slightly higher than 2mill pee volume, and even though the 40 million figure was probably across everything KnY related -aka the novels and other books- it will get to 2 million sold per volume.

KnY is pretty much unprecedented in how it exploded like this, sure we have the Dr.Slump example of the boost from when it got the anime, and also the One Piece 2011 boost, but it also isn't comparable because even though it got a huge boost.. it just wasn't KnY 15x levels of boost. (I'm guessing it sold around 100,000-120,000 pre-anime? And now it's at almost 2mill, so a 15x boost in sales basically out of nowhere.)

I wish we had sale data for Yu Yu Hakusho because I think it's pretty similar

Also Gintama isn't the first comedy to sell that good, Dr.Slump and Kochikame (in its prime, because it must have sold like hot cake back then to achieve the sales it has today. ) probably sold more than Gintama ever did per volume.

.........................

I think a lot of people is just looking at total KnY sales (currently 40 million as of Feb 7th 2020) and those are impressive BUT when you realize that it achieved 2 million sales per volume right now (not years after it finished, thus selling millions in backlog thru the years, like most other manga data we have) that's way way waaaay more impressive because as I said it puts it higher than series like HxH and Naruto in per volume sales, in fact only DB, OP and Slam Dunk beat KnY in per volume sales. Maybe YYH slightly beat KnY sales too.

Now, what do Slam Dunk, Yu Yu hakusho and Dragon Ball all have in common? They all are from WSJ's golden age.
One Piece is an outlier, the best selling manga in history.

So KnY is selling at those levels (Lower than OP, DB and SD, higher-ish than YYH).
KNY has overtaken Bleach, POT obviously but that does not mean Bleach or POT were not incredible either.
In any case, I was simply countering IceKing's perspective that such sales is a rare thing when for the 80s, 90s and early 00s, it wasn't.

KNY's sales looks more massive in perspective because of how much it sold before the anime while most other series were already selling quite well before the anime.

Reprints Information - 2/4

Spy x Family 1~3 - 2/25
Chainsaw Man 1~5 - 2/25

Reprints Information - 2/7

Kimetsu no Yaiba Official Fanbook - 2/27

Note: The ones on 2/4 are straight to bookstores and the ones on 2/7 are going to both bookstores and warehouses.
At this rate SxF might break one million per volume before it gets an anime in two years. xD
Glad to see CSM going strong! <3

At this point, KNY is practically printing money. I wonder how well the movie will sell given the hype, ufotable good record with the first 2 fate movies and the fact that it is canon. By the way, what is the highest grossing WSJ movie?

Solid apology from WSJ. But yeah, this should've come initially itself.

They need to give the ones who were hurt by this whole situation some time and eventually, it'll be water under the bridge.
It wouldn't have made a difference also this is just a reiteration of what was said in the first statement 4 days ago. This only makes Shuiesha looks good because to everyone else Korean/China not only overreacted over a misconception but they also pirated their work so that just makes it even worse

This just wipes Shuiesha of any blame but also it essentially does mean they'll be more accommodating to overseas standards and practices in the future which can really go both ways.

In terms of animated or live action? Animated it's One Piece Z with 6.8 billion yen, live action it's Gintama 2. In terms of overall revenue Broly had a total gross of 13 billion yen for theaters (4 billion yen) and home release add on top of it's worldwide gross of $125 million.

Interesting drawing Anya as brunette to celebrate volume sales. I didn't recognize her at first lol
You could mistake her for Ochako, of all people.

The official translation of the name when spelled out was Maruta, right (looking through M+)? Which refers to the WW2 test subject incident.
I get that it was unintentional and probably not something that crossed Horikoshi's mind or even WSJ's editors.
Again, the character was an evil scientist with that name. Any Korean or Chinese who knows about their history can probably make a connection there even if it was unintentional.
So if anyone here or on any other outside forum or platform thinks its an "overreaction", then that's on them alone.

Also, it doesn't really wipe Shuiesha off any blame. They literally apologized and said they will do better meaning they have accepted their mistake.

Yeah given the potential size of the market in China combined with Japan's population dwindling, they probably do need to keep things like this in mind for the future.

I get that some people here think such censorship is uncalled for but if you want your products to go global, you need to adhere to and respect those cultures as well.

As an example, the love making scenes in most Hollywood movies are removed when shown in Dubai because it goes against the city's and country's ideals.
R-rated movies are traditionally very much censored down there but there was a change happening with Deadpool given how that movie's whole appeal was the R rated comedy.

志賀丸太(Shiga Maruta) in the correct context means "A round and fat man who wishes people's good future. Its matching "two-faced" evil scientist which in turn matches the kana in Maruta’s name backward you get “taruma” (タルマ) “ta” and “da” have similar phonetic symbols in the Japanese language so when changed you get “Daruma” (ダルマ) his pseudonymous first name and a daruma is an object of adepicting a bearded man that is known for giving good luck.

It was never intended to be in reference to that incident on top of the fact that it doesn't make sense or even fits with how Hori names his character.

I get that it was unintentional and probably not something that crossed Horikoshi's mind or even WSJ's editors.
Again, the character was an evil scientist with that name. Any Korean or Chinese who knows about their history can probably make a connection there even if it was unintentional.
This can easily be disproved because no character in MHA has a direct meaning like 志賀丸太(Shiga Maruta)or else you're going to end up stuff like "Green Valley" they tend to make sense upon broken up individually which adds a another layer as a synopsis of the character.
志賀丸太(Shiga Maruta)according to you is a direct reference to Unit 731's victims but it doesn't say anything about the character in question all we have to go by is story details but when Hori gives his characters names he makes sure that you're able to get them automatically without story details (Midoriya Izuku literally means 9th user).

So if anyone here or on any other outside forum or platform thinks its an "overreaction", then that's on them alone.
When you have to resort to death threats over a misconception of a character in s children's comic book then yeah it's an overreaction no matter how you slice it.

Also, it doesn't really wipe Shuiesha off any blame. They literally apologized and said they will do better meaning they have accepted their mistake.
Of course it does. Neither China or Korea look good in this situation since China is well known for cancelling anything that the government doesn't deem ethical to their standards like Winnie the Pooh and the outrage came about because Korea pirated the chapter.

Yeah given the potential size of the market in China combined with Japan's population dwindling, they probably do need to keep things like this in mind for the future.
It's already been shown that the manga market share in Japan is much smaller than America and France and two of Jump's biggest titles, Assassination Classroom and Death Note were banned in China the latter of which is still going strong for over 15 years.

I get that some people here think such censorship is uncalled for but if you want your products to go global, you need to adhere to and respect those cultures as well.
This kind of logic is the reason why manga licensing got such a bad rep from the 80s to early 00s and how creators outright refused to have their works published in America because they were afraid that they would have ruined the author's intent.

on the subject of milking KnY
it's pretty weird they haven't released a videoagame yet, Tanjiro isn't even in Jump Force!

on the subject of shoseki daily sales
遊☆戯☆王 OCG ストラクチャーズ 1 集英社 佐藤雅史 2020.2.4
the unsung hero

Viz and M+ still have not picked it up, they alway pick up YuGiOh parts very late into their lifetime, but I thought that would change with M+ being a thing

Despite Kimetsu mega-masive records, I'd say the Jump main 10s mangas would be My Hero Academia. The other contender would be Haikyuu but Hero Academia has had so far:
-4 anime seasons.
-3 manga spinoffs.
-2 movies.
-2 videogames (or 3? I recall a Android game)
-Light novels
-Tons and tons and tons of merchandising

Haikyuu has more total sales but with the advantage of being 2 years older. And you can notice that Hero Academia has inspired a lot of mangakas from the new generation (Haikyuu is more limited because the spokon niche).

Assassination Classroom was big but its popularity "ended" in 2015. Kimetsu is collosal, but only in last year of the decade. Hero Academia has been influential for almost all the decade.

I'd say Hero Academia has managed to be for Jump in 10s what One Piece and Naruto were for 00s, Dragon Ball and Yu Yu Hakusho (and maybe Kenshin) for 90s, or Dragon Ball again, Saint Seiya, and Hokuto no Ken for 80s

@ChocoBar9

Reading your explanation makes me think of two things.

1. Horikoshi is kinda lazy with his naming conventions.
Yeah he's actually admitted that it's far too casual since the beginning of the manga which makes this controversy even more silly.

2. I really, REALLY miss Kubo's character names. They were always batshit insane.
Who can miss such classics like Wonderweiss, Nelliel Tu Odelschwanck, and Cirucci Sanderwicci.

Not lifetime. I doubt it'll beat out Bleach's lifetime sales, honestly.
Again, lifetime sales are one thing, but when you go by "sold by volume" only 4 WSJ titles (And I can only assume a very, very small amount of manga in the history of manga) have sold more than Kimetsu No Yaiba, those 4 titles being Dragon Ball, One Piece and Slam Dunk and maybe Yu Yu Hakusho.

Remember all those titles were published in the golden era of Jump AKA when Jump sold like 5-6 million per issue, so I am flabbergasted that a title could reach those numbers today.

Other titles that have reached 2+ million:
Attack on Titan had 61'000,000 with 21 volumes

Ike! Ina-chu Takkyubu (Ping Pong Club) sold 25'000,000 with only 13 volumes AKA, again that was published from 1993 to 1996.

Touch with 100'000,000 with 26 volumes (!) and what's even more scary is that these numbers are from Dec-2004 (I'm guessing that's when the Touch Kanzenban got released or someting and it prbably had advertisement like "100 million seller" or something).

GTO 25 volumes 50'00,000 sold BUT I have my doubts about these numbers since as we know the GTO series has a lot of spin offs (And GTO itself is a sequel to Shonan Junai Gumi).. so Maybe those numbers are for the entire franchise.

Any other titles that sold as hot as Kny? I kno this is a WSJ thread but I kinda hijacked it lol.

I doubt for example that any classic manga like Tezuka titles sold super hot, they probably steadily sold with the years.. But who knows, we will probably never know lol

All this info I got from EasyLove's videos

Tanjiro not in Jump Force at this given time make sense, season pass #1 just finished, and season pass 2 just got announced like Mid December with 2 characters already in the file, so tanjiro will prob be somewhere in the middle of the pack

1. Horikoshi is kinda lazy with his naming conventions.
I mean, he literally has a character with iron (tetsu) power, whose name is "Tetsutetsu Tetsutetsu" using four different Kanji that can somehow be read as "tetsu". So, in actuality, he is brilliant :cheez

Also it's Jump Force who cares. :eyeroll
Surprised there isn't a mobage announcement or even a collaboration. If BC can get a PS4 game a few months after it's anime Kimetsu can at least get a gatcha promo with FGO.
Hate to spoil the joke, but FGO doesn't do crossover promos. That's GBF's ballhouse.
