Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Ice King it was never his intention to reference the event in question. This stance would make sense if Hori intentionally made it to reference that event as a statement but he didn't. I agree that it wasn't really a mistake just a misconception between culture barriers that shouldn't have sparked such controversy.
That's how Japanese wordplay works, right? Japanese wordplay can be complex sometimes that different words in Japanese can be interpreted multiple ways. I think this is basically what happened with the Doctor's name. You could interpret it in different meanings:

1. You could interpret that it's referring to the name of the project (quite likely)
2. It could be referring to the victims (highly unlikely)
3. It could be referring to his Quirkless status (most likely)
4. It could simply mean "round and fat" (very likely)

But most of all, the bottom line is, all or any of those could be true, and yet people are quick to assume the worst. That's the foremost issue.

Here's how incredibly crazy and complex this had gotten last week.

A twitter user insinuated that the name was in reference to an infamous ****** artist because the name Maruta Shiga can be also read as....

Now those who don't know who this guy is? You don't want to know. :derp Let's just say be glad that the name is neither in reference to the war crimes or a guro ****** artist. :3c

I...have heard of him, I think. Trust us, you don't want to look him up.

BTW, I'd suggest spoiler-marking that and add a GIANT WARNING @ChocoBar9

Nah. Thank for sharing this.
This will forever be my headcannon that Hori was thinking of that infamous dude while making that name.

In regards to the poll question, I don't really come close to reading every WSJ series. The oldest series that I've followed since its creation is We Never Learn, so it'll be a pretty noteworthy thing to me once it comes to a conclusion. I am current on Yuuna, but it had already started by the time I learned about it a couple years ago. Everything else I am currently reading has been followed since its first chapter release (Act-Age, Chainsawman, Mitama, Yozakura, Undead, Agravity, Mashle, Witch). Witch and Agravity are still new enough to be in the potentially drop zone though. I'm way behind on Dr. Stone, but I'll probably catch up on that one day.

Remembering, the poll for issue #10 will close in some hours, so if you not voted yet or forgot to, do it HERE

At the moment we have basically the same number of voters we had last week.

On the poll, I'm trying to catch up on everything. The ones I'm not reading weekly atm are One Piece (60ish vols in), Haikyuu (waiting for S4 to end first), KnY (waiting for Viz to upload backlog), Yuuna (not on jump), and S8 cause it sucks.

Guys, the Horikoshi debates are starting to get seriously old at this point.

Anyway, holy shit, Spy x Family be unstoppable.
Spy x Family's growth is pretty insane.
It's really funny how last year when people were saying MHA was the most a series will sell, KNY came in and destroyed that opinion
Then people argued that newer series sell a lot less than they did in the past (in an attempt to explain the lack of sales of some other series), SxF comes in and is proving that wrong as well.

I’ve yet to read it but I’m happy for SxF. I know the author’s been at it for years with little to no success, so to see him with the most successful new manga of the past few years must feel pretty nice.

Rin-San must be proud as well. He’s working on this, Chainsaw Man, Heart Gear, and I forget the fourth one.

MHA couldn't beat Haikyuu or even AssClass peak and was fighting neck and neck with Neverland last year.

How has Heart Gear been doing? Last I heard, I thought it wasn't selling too well. But between Spy x Family and Chainsawman, he sure is doing well for himself

Honestly wondering how many series will actually debut this year. Normally Jump likes to keep it capped at 11, but with all the series which are ending this year...

Yeah, that's why people said those highs could never be reached again with the current state of the industry and the MHA/TPN peak was all they could hope for now. Which has indeed been disproven by Kimetsu.

I think we may see more than 11 this year, unless every series that just premiered is deemed to be a hit. I'd say everything from Samurai 8 onward has yet to cement itself in the lineup and is fair-game for being cancelled. Usually, there aren't this many established series approaching their conclusions. We Never Learn and Yuuna both seem to be next on deck when looking exclusively at established series coming to their natural conclusions. This will be the nest time to try to get a romcom to take off in WSJ that I can think of in recent memory. In addition, Neverland, Kimetsu, and Haikyuu are all in their endgame, which I'm guessing means they'll probably be wrapped up within a year or 2.

Here's a game, with Jump Force being, uh, not good, how about we have a bit of fun and design our own Jump crossover fighter? Game style, roster, you name it.

I dunno, just a bit of fun.

This is too speculative. This is like, one level away from us writing fanfiction and the like.

Let's keep the thread fact-based.

And even that wasn't true back then. Kimetsu didn't disprove anything since it was a lightening in a bottle that only got attention after its anime. People just want to pretend that more reading platforms was the reason why sales didn't reach the same peaks as the previous decade,
