WSJ (and literally everything) have been sticking with seasonal anime since early 10s. Dunno what happened then, maybe economical crisis or whatever, but 2008-2012 was the big change of manga to anime airing conception. Gintama is a clear example since it was a long serialization in 00s (200 episodes) and then changed to modern "anime per 25 episodes seasons".
Tradionally everything was in long serializations (Hokuto no Ken, Saint Seiya, Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, Yu Yu Hakusho, Kenshin, Yu-Gi-Oh, One Piece, HunterxHunter, The Prince of Tennis, Hikaru no Go, Shaman King, Naruto, Bobobo...
Let's get near of the key years. Before 2010 we had still the lon serialization format: Bleach in 2004,Eyeshield 21 in 2005, Gintama, Death Note, and D.Gray-man and Reborn in 2006. The exceptions were the adaptations which never got season 2 (Ichigo 100% and Black Cat in 2005, Neuro in 2007). Is important to notice how 2007 literally only had Neuro (and Naruto Shippuuden).
I'd say the first anime which changed to modern format was To Love-Ru, with season 1 in 2008 and season 2 in 2010. Then 2009 Jump anime was... Dragon Ball Kai, which was long serialization since Dragon Ball.
And we enter to the 10s decade. Nurarihyon no Mago was like Black Cat or Neuro, but the other Jump anime, Bakuman, had actually two seasons in fall 2010 and fall 2011. Then in 2011 would be the last year of the old long serialization (all 2011 Jump adaptations: Beelzebub, Toriko, Sket Dance, and HxH 2011 were long serializations with with more than 2 curs, with Sket Dance being 45 consecutive episodes, Beelzebub 60, and Toriko +120).
Then situation changed in 2012. Medaka Box was two seasons (more like 1 season with one break cur in summer). Kuroko no Basket was serializated in seasons. And JoJo too. 2013 only Jump anime was Hana no Keiji anime adaptation (1990 manga by Tetsuo Hara) which had a single cur of 25 episodes, but then in 2014 you see Nisekoi, Haikyuu and World Trigger divided in seasons. And then Assassination Classroom, Shokugeki, Hero Academia...
The only exception since 2012 so far has been Black Clover. And you can see how badly it has affected (to the point that Black Clover is literally the only anime adaptation in last 5 years with no nendoroids in last WonFes).
