It means jack shit, to my knowledge.

All Shueisha gets out of it is a licencing fee, they earn no real financial gains from overseas sales.
I very highly doubt they don't make money from overseas sales. If anything in the form of royalties.

Either way, overseas sales would have to be really crazy to offset bad domestic sales. Samurai 8 did below <45k in france so that's not really the case.

The JJK anime got officially announced almost 3 months ago and we don’t know a single thing about it officially. No announcements or anything just a single poster. Pretty worrying
Unless they want the studio reveal to be mind blowing and garner hype like that.

My best guess would be they gave it an early announcement to try to generate a boost for the upcoming double volume release, but they didnt start any sort of production except voice acting

Today, VIZ released digital-only volumes for three more cancelled Jump series. As far as I can tell, the content is pretty much the exactly the same as the original weekly chapters, just with grayscaled color pages and all the volume extras translated. Still nice to see these series again months after their endings though. The covers actually look pretty nice (especially the logo on Saiyuki's volume)!

Also, I thought this would be interesting to share. In his author comment, Shiibashi talks a little bit about the creation of Yui Kamio. Interesting that the idea dates all the way back to around the end of Nura.

Mashle is an outcast from the magical world and is being forced to change it from within so he and his dad can survive which is a way better set up than the other series (arguably). Definitely relatable and not foreign in the slightest.

Literally, all of these goals are simply meant to enhance the comedy not to be the main drive.
Mob is the only series that actually does something about character growth among these and I can see Mashle following Mob in that path.
Saiki and OPM were setup for just the comedy.
I don't find his objectives really relatable, since he doesn't want to change the world, but just to have a good life with his father. He doesn't care or even know about the problems of this world, he doesn't even understand or have the interest to know why this world rejects him and his father. He's being forced to take a responsibility, that he doesn't want. He's fighting and taking this burden, because other people told him to do so. Maybe in the future, this can be more developed, and his objectives can become better, but by now, he's a guy just doing what he was told.

The objective are used to comedy, but they also help the story progress. Saitama wants to be a hero, to escape his boring life of salaryman. Is because he wants a more exciting life, that he desires to be strong and find a strong foe to fight. He didn't kill Boros in the first punch, because he wanted a challenge. Saitama desire to escape boredom, is one of the things that keep him going. The same goes for Saiki and his desire to be normal, that's the reason why he finds the other characters and is why he doesn't just control the entire world. So they're things that help the comedy, but are also relevante to the character and their actions.

I get that YOU don't find it relatable. That's fine. You do you.
Doesn't mean its not relatable to the general audience. A lot of people just want have a good life with their loved ones without bothering anyone else in the world.

"he's just a guy doing what he was told"
Yes. We all do as we are told when we are kids. He is a kid.
I know that some shounen series like to show a mature MC but not every series needs the MC to have the world on their shoulders or fix everything.

Your explanation for OPM and Saiki are just detailing the very basic plot point and showing how that is used in the comedy or supposed plot progression. I can do the same with Mashle;
Mash's objective to have a peaceful life with his dad and his willingness to do whatever it takes, even be in a magic academy despite his lack of magic abilities, via just brute strength which is what he has done as a child. It's what the mangaka has been showing throughout the first few chapters, that Mashle is beating the magic academy system without having any abilities in it.
Also, OPM has zero plot progression because of Saitama's abilities or goals or his boredom. Plot progression in OPM is solely because of disasters that constantly happen in that world which are not in any way related to him.

The series is 5 chapters in.
I'm sure if the series gets to 50 chapters, the world will be much bigger and actual main objectives and arcs will present themselves. But as of right now, Mashle is right there with where OPM, Saiki or Mob were in their first 5 chapters.

You're expecting way too much from a 5 chapter old comedy series.

I take it that Viz will start to publish axed series in digital only.

It's kinda sad to read that author comment. Imagine planning a series for seven years only for it to get brutally murdered soon after.

He didn't said he planned for 7 years but that the idea came 7 years ago, he published Illegal Rare and other mini-series/one shots between Nura and Yui

Fair point. What is or not relatable is totally subjective.

Being a kid, doesn't mean that he needs to be so unaware of the problems of his world, problems that the work wants him to fix, and he also doesn't need to be so directionless. Kids have dreams, desires, they question authority and the world around them. He being a kid, doesn't change the fact that at this point, all he's doing as following orders from other people.
And we have a lot of child characters, in other mangas that doesn't hold the weight of the world in their back and are interesting, Naru from Barakamon, Tsumugi from Amaama to Inazuma, Rio And Nanao from God's lie or even Coco from Atelier of witch hat, this one who is a similar situation to Mashle, are much more aware of the world around them. They have interesting personalities, they know what's happening, even though they don't fully understand, they question the things around them and they try to improve and evolve.
Besides that, isn't Mashle 15? He would be a teen not a kid.

I mean he didn't choose to enter the academy, he was forced and he is smashing society, without having any clue of what he's doing. Mashle is not opposing the system, because he doesn't even know about it.

Saitama action affects the world and characters, he affected how Geno's saw the world, and is one of the forced behind his desire of being a strong hero, he also was the one that chose to let the heros take the credit for the defeat of the sea king, because he know that if he hadn't done that, people would lose their faith in heroes, he also is the one that chose to not kill Garou, because he saw him as a human. Yeah, he doesn't do the biggest changes in the world, but he's relevant to the shape his world is taking.
The same way Saiki, ends up affecting and being affected by the characters in his series. But since his series is a comedy, the way the characters affect each other is different.

Yeah, if the manga gets to be bigger, so there's the possibility of Mashle and the world being developed. But by now, in this 5 chapters, the series is pretty weak and fail to establish, at least to me, a interesting history and MC.

Quite important. When a studio is doing more than 1 show within the same time period you have to distribute the staff somehow . And by chance or intentionally, one of the series will get the short end of the stick in quality . Since MAPPA is rumored to be doing 5 shows in 2020, someone is going to suffer for it. Though the studio has a lot of staff (145) and a good director can draw in many freelancers and with a good schedule they can pull through. Since JK is a WSJ series and was announced first ( I think), they may give it preferential treatment. Lets just see how it goes

Clearly it's not getting preferential treatment since we got PV for the webtoon they're working on but not JJK. The visual for JJK looks really nice but the lack of a PV is worrisome. This reminds me of Yuragi's anime where we didn't get a PV for a long time and once they gave us a PV it was hardly animated (I dont think itll be that bad but still worrisome).

"a Korean webtoon"

You mean the God of High School? I'm actually pretty hyped for that, since that series is very similar to Dragon Ball and Toriko when it comes to balls to the wall power levels.
You like Webtoon buranchi? I have my own webtoon too if you want to check it out at my signature below. (my chapter 2 will be on delay because i'm still improving my art and it expected will be on early march)

Ok! back on to the topic, there is miss universe japan who is half black (i forgot her name) and i thought she will be perfect for Krone casting.

I think they have more trouble finding someone who can act out her role rather than finding a black female. Lol just because a female is black or half black doesnt mean she's a good role for Krone lol. I think some people are looking too much into it.

Meh, the actress they picked honestly felt like a good fit for Krone to me, color aside.

I'd imagine it would be fairly freaking hard to find a good black actress with fluent japanese that is also fitting for Krone AND wants the part. Like, I really don't get why this has to be an issue.

Either way, overseas sales would have to be really crazy to offset bad domestic sales. Samurai 8 did below <45k in france so that's not really the case.

@KoL2.0

There are a couple of properties I can think of whose new volumes probably sold more outside Japan, like Saint Seiya Next Dimension for instance, it probably sold more in countries like France than in Japan. I'm 100% sure that total sales outside of Japan are higher than sales in Japan for SS Next Dimension, and that's probably true for every other Saint Seiya spinoff manga.

Other franchises I guess could have sold more outside Japan than in Japan are Nintendo franchises like Pokemon Special or the Zelda mangas.

I tried googling Saint Seiya sales in France alone especifically for the newest manga which hasn't sold so hot in Japan (compared to the original franchise) but didn't find them, but what I found is that from 2003 to 2013 Saint Seiya manga sales in Japan alone were around 3.3 million, and worldwide it was 3.7 million which in total was 7 million.

Which doesn't really answer your question, but I guess my answer would be.. Let's say there is a new manga that Idk imagine is like an american Gintama, like Idk has weird crazy humor but related to more american stuff like say Donald Trump jokes Idk, it sells 10k in Japan but becomes a hit and sells Idk 50k volumes in USA..

So what I'd guess could happen here is that the manga gets cancelled in Japan (If we are assuming this particular manga ran in WSJ, because I think lots of manga sell 10k volumes outside of WSJ and continue, I think, I'm not completely sure on this one) but anyway it gets cancelled in WSJ but maybe a licensor in the USA might then pick it up? Like I can only assume 50k sales in a single market are super strong enough sales? If the author in this hypotetical case was smart enough he could idk continue this doing like a webcomic and publishing the volumes him/herself and selling them on the USA??

The closest example I can think of, even though it's not manga is the Ultimate Muscle anime that ran in Fox Kids in the 2000s, the anime was more popular in the states and there was an extra season or two made for the american market which 4kids commisioned or something like that.. So I guess the same would apply to manga.

You were saying?
did that reallyy happen in Gintama? haha damn I need to read it someday xD

Edit: so after making this post.. I thought.. How there are some manga like Gintama and Reborn that sold super well in Japan and ... not that well outside of japan, like in most places they got cancelled (Even though in certain territories they got licensed again a couple of so years later, e.g. here in Mexico Reborn just recently finished being published, I know in Italy Gintama is being published..)

But still, makes you wonder why these mangas underperfomed in countries outside of Japan, like I get why Gintama did, maybe the humor was too Japanese, but why did Reborn got canned? It was your typical battle Shonen manga... Just a thought I had, since we were talking about a hypotetical manga that sold super well outside Japan, and these two titles came to mind because they are pretty much the opposite of what we were discussing.

I said below 45k because it wasn't in the "big hitters" chart that was posted a while back, which only had jump volumes that did 45k and above. I don't think numbers are known for S8 in france. I don't know if it actually did do better than it did in japan.
