Midora in Toriko was handled *very* well.

As an aside, any predictions on the amount of HxH chapters that'll be released this year? We know there will be enough for a volume, but I more meant, beyond that.

Oh, Midora was the best character in Toriko hands down. But my point is that Toriko didn't exactly have a lot of "competition" in terms of its cast. Most of the characters were more in service of the world than the story.

I have to wonder if part of this is just Togashi's age catching up to him. Mid-50s is pretty old for mangaka (Aoyama only manages it by Conan being 70% his assistants work) and I doubt that coupled with a history of health problems would do nice things to the body.

Given how long this is going, the fact that he already had the storyboards for 391-400 done, and what happened the last time he reached a hundredth chapter mark, 20 chapters.

Wow, that's very optimistic. When was the last time he released 20 chapters before returning to hiatus?

There was no new HxH chapters last year so we could get nothing again.

I know Togashi has free reign at this but I really don't get what he's planning, the guy can't manage to get a single chapter out some years yet, whenever he does produce something, it's just some random new character that doesn't matter explaining their ability that doesn't matter, with no meaningful progress made.

You'd think he'd realise maybe he's not going to finish this arc like that (nevermind the later ones he apparently plans) and and will try to rush through this dumb boat bit to get to the stuff he really wants to write most (unless this is the stuff he really wants to do, I don't know, maybe he's lost total interest in the previous cast or villains). At the current pacing, there's is absolutely 0% chance of the series actually having the intended ending before he literally can't keep going any more.

What is Togashi even doing?

He published 30 chapters in a row from 2011 to 2012. Before this current hiatus, he released a total of 20 chapters in 2018 (one batch at the start of the year, and another at the end).

I get the impression he simply doesn't care about what his readers want or desire. He just does what he feels like, readers be damned.

Huh, I guess I just wasn't paying attention back then. Well, here's hoping.

Interesting take. I thought they would do well, but I checked some other polls and even some villains very popular in the West, like Aizen, did poorly on their series polls. I guess the love for villains is a western thing?

Edit: Actually, I think if you have only one card to vote, it makes more sense to vote for a character from the hero team. If you can have two though, things can be different.
Didn't Grimmjow and Ulquiorra made in top 10 in one of Bleach Popularity poll?

In One Piece, Captain Kuro managed to be 9th in the first popularity poll, at the time characters wasn't that many, but still.

Can someone remind me what is actually going on with Togashi? I remember something about health problems, but what kind of problems?

He's only gone for 20(+) chapters in a row two times over the entire run of the series. The 30 chapter run in 2011-2012 that lazybones mentioned, and then the 20 chapter run in 2010 when he reached chapter 300 that I was alluding to.
I know Togashi has free reign at this but I really don't get what he's planning, the guy can't manage to get a single chapter out some years yet, whenever he does produce something, it's just some random new character that doesn't matter explaining their ability that doesn't matter, with no meaningful progress made.
I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment that the series won't finish at this pace, but the above is literally false.

No joking, he can do that. Honestly I can't see HxH going for another 5 years, it would be too much for him.

With HxH, as much as I love it, my expectations for new chapters are nonexistent. If we happen to get any, it's a pleasant surprise, and you better believe I'm gonna enjoy them. It may seem a bit confusing and aimless, but going back and rereading the recent chapters makes it flow really well and really hypes me up for what (someday) may come.

I mean, with a chronic pain like his, I imagine there are probably days or even weeks when he can't do any work at all, so... hopefully he is preparing stuff and thinking about and at worst, he can't work at all.

That's what is really frustrating about the current situation, even if he come back next week i'm already prepared for another 10 chapters of "blah blah blah" between random guards and another 100 new characters and complicated powers being introduced and the real plot barely moving, Togashi is stuck in hell with this boat arc.

Regarding the length of HxH's current arc, this author comment from the last batch of chapters is very relevant:

Togashi really loves writing this story, that's clear from the countless interviews he's done. If he's able to stay healthy while doing what he loves, I'd be happy to wait any amount of time.
