Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I just want to remind people that Horikoshi's previous series, Sensei no Bulge (or whatever it got localised to), got a colour page on ch 10 "as thanks for the popularity" then got cancelled at ch 16.

Editor hype means nothing, colour pages mean nothing, the only (mostly) consistent indicator of success is being placed well on the ToC. Decent sellers have been cancelled in favour of lower selling series because the low-seller was higher on the ToC.
Agreed 100 percent. I'm not a fortune teller. If Agravity or Yozakura were to start shooting up in the TOC then I'll revise my stance. But only then. If a series' saving grace is that it's only placed above a few series that are either on the chopping block themselves or about to end naturally...well let's just say that if I was a fan of said series that wouldn't encourage me to feel secure in it's long term success.

Oh wow, almost 8 years ago Sensei no Bulge got a color page but the series was cancelled, it's almost like this very isolated case can be used to prove everything related to the current magazine after almost a decade :super

How color pages don't mean anything? tell the last new series that got a color page after the 2nd chapter that were quickly cancelled with less than 20 chapters? the last newbies excluding S8 that got a new color page were Yozakura and Mitama, both series that are surviving in the magazine and going already for 30 chapters mark. I think you didn't realised yet but the current SJ values much more volume sales than the ToC itself, and even the ToC is much more aligned to reflect the sales of new series.

Here's that manga Fujimoto used as inspiration for the most recent chapter.

I thought it was much older, but just the art style (released in 2010).

That's simply not true. TOC trumps all, even sales.

Mitama aside, Yozakura is barely hanging in there. It's not a successful series. The ONLY way it survives long term is that it's ranking increases.

Btw the sales of Yozakura aren't all that impressive to me. I remember Jujutsu Kaisen's first volume. Now that was an impressive first volume sales. Perhaps it did much better than your typical axe fodder but that's a low bar.

But wasn't Yui Kamoi or whatever also pretty bad in sales and ranking yet it still stuck around for quite a while?

Yup. Though I chalk that up to scheduling + plus Shiibashi being a veteran.

I have 2 questions, if anyone has time to answer me please:
1) is MangaPlus the same as Jump+ ?
2) do Jump+ series have a similar poll/ranking like WSJ does?

Thanks in advance

Thats a bit outdated view on SJ, the ToC isn't a entity separated from sales, is just the placement decided by one or a group of editors based in many factors including volume sales, the current ToC is much more of a reflection of volume sales when it comes to newbies, this is what all the newbies since Act-Age have in common: Starting with average/mediocre rankings and suddenly rising after the first volume gets released or later volumes start to get momentum. Even Jujutsu Kaisen that you mentioned started with very average toc positions, many in the bottom until the first volume was released and became a hit.

No one thinks that Yozakura sales are "impressive" but that it's decent to good considering the current moment in the magazine and the manga is basically safe for now, getting reprint and a color page, also the rankings are already slowly recovering, Mitama is clearly a case of editors seeing the potential and pushing it with color pages, double chapters and promotional stuff, you can bet that if the sales stay stagnated in the 5k club, the rankings will drop again (but i believe will grow)

No. MangaPlus is Shueisha's shared site for English (and other foreign language) simulpubs. It publishes selected series from Shonen Jump, Jump+, Young Jump, V-Jump and Jump SQ. Oh, and one from Saikyo Jump ever since I'm from Japan moved there.

That reminds me, does anyone have, say, the Honto rankings for Yozakura? The reprint of Vol 1 would be out today...

Look, I don't dislike Yozakura, but now people are saying that the series suddenly got better even though, to me, it is the same way it was already.

The focus still remains only in Taiyou and Mutsumi (and sometimes the creepy brother and the Hinagiku guy), and all other siblings are still missing. OK, maybe there's a thread to develop a story with Taiyou parents now, but I won't credit it being good till I see it. There's no garantee that next chapter we won't have another Mutsumi's crazy fan. Also, the battles keep being villains getting almost always one hit ko'ed by Taiyou (or by the creepy brother and the Hinagiku guy) and that's it.

So, even though I don't think Yozakura's that bad like people said before, I really don't get where all this praise is coming from now, too.
I agree that the most recent arc was still completely below mediocre but the SOL chapter that just happened was still really great.

Yes I remember. I was bummed because JJK had a slow start. I thought it was going to be cancelled. However, I think you're overlooking something. JJK started improving in the rankings because the quality of the series improved. I remember when it started rising. Those chapters being ranked were when it started to be super fire. And so, it's first volume sold well which reflected the increase in quality and popularity. Occam's razor.

I'm leaving Mitama out of it due to its super high position recently. But how has Yozakura increased? It's ranked about the same throughout. Maybe fourth from the bottom instead of second or third depending on the week. It's possible that in the coming weeks it will improve because the editors know the rankings well before we do. Maybe that's why it got a color page. Or maybe it got one because they want to give it a little promotion, see if it helps. But as of right now, we have no reason to think it's because of booming popularity or ground breaking volume sales.

My issue with the "Jump pushed it that's why it's grown" argument is that why wouldn't they do that for everything? Samurai 8 in my opinion is terrible. All the colors in the world won't save it. If people like a series they like it, editorial comments color pages or not.

You're using something subjective that is "quality", if you ask here most people will overpraise Mitama Secureity as a great/fantastic comedy, and it's indeed really good, so why the series underperformed and the so "criticized" Yozakura sold better than everybody thought? Thing is, Jujutsu Kaisen only started to be noticed and do great after the first volume was released and became a hit, that's my point.

You say you don't have any reason to think it's because growing in popularity but you basically stated the reasons before saying that, sales were very decent, it's getting a reprint (which never happens to a flop), got a color page like two weeks ago and the rankings are slowly going up compared to being dead last before, simple, if it will really grow is one thing, but there are plenty of reasons to think that is recovering.

"Pushing" a series is basically advertising, people will not simply discover a new series out of nowhere, is just a portion of japanese readers that follow weekly magazines, most only buy tankobon so you need to "push" and advertise stuff when it shows potential of growing, that's how many things grow in popularity.

One can only look at Samurai 8 to see how Jump believes in the TOC. When the series started, Jump was fully capitalizing on it due to obvious reasons, and that's reflected in the TOC. It started very high, never dropping below the upper card, moved down to the mid-card for a bit even with two colors and an LCP at Chapter 12), then nosedived from Chapter 13 onward down to just above the cancellation fodder, then finally slumped at the very bottom once those four were cleared out, with not a single new CP. In one pattern, you can tell Jump trying hard to push S8 as the new big thing, only to choose drop support for it once it became clear the reception wasn't what they wanted. Pretty simple, TBH.

Because it's a gag manga? That's just the nature of the genre, no? Agree to disagree. The series started to majorly improve in it's rankings around chapter 7 well before volume 1 came out. The good sales followed the TOC rankings, not the other way around.

We shall see. I think Yozakura has potential if it focuses on action more and if it starts to consistently rank out of the bottom 5, I'll be more than happy for it. But until then I'll be counting down the weeks until it's eventually cancelled.

I understand that but how is this potential determined? Some series start stronger than others obviously but what's the benchmark for what's worth pushing? Obviously the answer would be TOC rankings, as that's the first real indication of how a series is beingreceived.

Are you forgetting the survey data? Jump's determinator for cancelling and launching series isn't a computer, it's a bunch of people who get together every two months and decide what to end and what to launch in its place.
