Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

I know this idea may be a little too far out and experimental for Jump, but what if Kubo's next manga goes the silent route? No text bubbles, just drawings.
I don't think Kubo is subtle enough for something like that (read blame if you want a (mostly) silent manga).

Because it's a gag manga? That's just the nature of the genre, no? Agree to disagree. The series started to majorly improve in it's rankings around chapter 7 well before volume 1 came out. The good sales followed the TOC rankings, not the other way around.

We shall see. I think Yozakura has potential if it focuses on action more and if it starts to consistently rank out of the bottom 5, I'll be more than happy for it. But until then I'll be counting down the weeks until it's eventually cancelled.

I understand that but how is this potential determined? Some series start stronger than others obviously but what's the benchmark for what's worth pushing? Obviously the answer would be TOC rankings, as that's the first real indication of how a series is beingreceived.
Being a gag manga doesn't make 5k copies "good sales". You mean when chapter 7 was ranked? because that was around issue #28 released in June 11, the first volume was release July 4, you're basically confirming that the manga started to rise with the release of volume 1.

You're again treating the ToC as if is a 100% representation of what is going on with a series today, the only thing you (or we) see is Agravity Boys at the "bottom five" and automatically assume the series is failing just because it's "there", Act-Age was placed under Agravity in the bottom on issue #13, that should tell enough about not treat the positions itself as a 1:1 unless of course you're constantly in the bottom 2/3, Chainsaw Man was 5 consecutive weeks in the bottom after the first good ranking and now it's super popular, Act-Age was even bottom 2 once.

One can only look at Samurai 8 to see how Jump believes in the TOC. When the series started, Jump was fully capitalizing on it due to obvious reasons, and that's reflected in the TOC. It started very high, never dropping below the upper card, moved down to the mid-card for a bit even with two colors and an LCP at Chapter 12), then nosedived from Chapter 13 onward down to just above the cancellation fodder, then finally slumped at the very bottom once those four were cleared out, with not a single new CP. In one pattern, you can tell Jump trying hard to push S8 as the new big thing, only to choose drop support for it once it became clear the reception wasn't what they wanted. Pretty simple, TBH.

That you are pointing to very specific moments which are memorable instead of the general layouts and storytelling exposes the hole inherent in your argument.
You mean in general? I don't overlooked that so will i corrected my post this time.

Pre-timeskip panelling was insane than Post-timeskip especially in East blue saga where it wasn't much crammed before. I can see some critics complaints that he lack of exposition of the characters like he use to and the result why they don't care the 9 scabbards weights because of it.

Oda's fear that can't create another same caliber of Enies lobby arc and he is right.

For me the Senior pink backstory is the last of his best storytelling he punched but fot the rest i don't care about it.

I can see why the Timeskip is started to decline because the world building is so massive like you need a brain of encyclopedia to tackle everything and so on.

For me i still enjoyed because of my memory can hold it up longer but not for everyone anymore. Who does remembered Batchee the bug at the Baratie?

Who are your favorite Jump mangaka right now? (In terms of their quirkiness, social media presence, author comments, etc)

Gorilla was the top favorite mangaka right? Was it because of his lazy gorilla persona?

I've really been enjoying Pidgeon-sensei, as far as personalities go. Remember, 1,2,3,4

I will never in my life understand how can you guys try to determine the objective status of a product based in relative numbers of a website we'll never get actual numbers from and comments from a guy whose job is supposed to be promoting the series he's in charge of. If you don't see what's wrong between those variables and being objective, okay then.

Seriously, why don't just wait.

KnY 19 is still at the top despite the other volumes get reprints this week. Do those volumes get weak sales this week?

Volume 19 has only been out for 3 weeks (and just got reprinted itself), why would you expect the other volumes to beat it?

Also, since when are we taking the general editorial hype magazine texts at face value? It will never state "This series is getting extra pages because it is struggling in the rankings, but we hope to turn it around with this promo move" or "This volume release is not doing so well, so we got a color page for additional promotion to do something about that". No, it will always the reasons for stuff is "great reception", "rave reviews" and "outstanding popularity".
Yeah, I never believe on those comments from the editors of the manga until I see the numbers on the volume. So many times it's said but then the volumes don't show it.

I have 2 questions, if anyone has time to answer me please:
1) is MangaPlus the same as Jump+ ?
2) do Jump+ series have a similar poll/ranking like WSJ does?

Thanks in advance
Jump+ has no TOC. But it has a ranking where you can see which manga is the most read there.

I feel like a new batch is coming in few weeks. Do you think they will focus on searching a new spokon.
I hope we can have something with great chara design and special moove as in Eye Shield or Kuroko!
What do you think is really needed for a spokeon to be a hit or least as some success?

The tricky part is that we don't have a massive pool to draw upon with spokon in the modern era of manga besides Haikyu, just a dozen or so series of varying levels of success. Additionally, unlike battle manga, sports manga has a pretty standardized structure that is very rarely broken (only Blue Lock to my knowledge doesn't use the Train -> Tournament -> Train -> Nationals format), so you can't exactly create something which "instantly" sticks out.

I will say, however, that I think these are some good prerequisites:
  1. The sport in focus has to both be presented in a sufficiently engaging manner that'd allow the reader to engage with, and be something the writer has some deeper level of knowlege on.
  2. All the members of the starting lineup of the team has to be on some level fleshed out. A sport is far more engaging when the actions of all the players on field can be considered.
  3. Showcase the players lives outside of the sport itself. It is far, far easier to beieve in the characters when they're shown to be human beings with lives that are more than just the sport.
  4. Don't delve into absurd theatrics which take the readers out of the action. Kuroko-esque special moves are a no go.
  5. Make the rival teams not mustache twirling jerks or generic men. Make it feel like their the sort of actual competition you'd engage with playing.
  6. Don't be Beast Children and have chickenscratch for art.
That's about everything. Anyone know any spokon one-shots that have come out in the last few years, or a creator who's expressed interest in doing one?

Everyone, this thread is *not* for challenging other user's opinions you disagree with, or for openly discussing grievances you might have with other users.

This thread is for discussing news/analytics/sales in regards to WSJ, as well as the health/future of the magazine.

I don't think 3) is that important, there are lots of sucessful series with limited information about the lifes of the characters off the pitch. I mean, the point about make the characters seem like human beings is valid, but a good author can show it just in their relationship with teammates and with the sport. And, well, about 4), Kuroko wasn't that long ago, why do you think it wouldnt work now? The rest of the points are valid, I feel, but these felt a little weird to me.

Anyway, I would like too see a spokon that was about the life of a pro from the get-go, that's a little thing that could add a lot to the dynamic. Some have it at a later point of the series, but I mean something like Ao Ashi, in which from the very beginning we see the MC trying to get into the youth team of a professional club (not a school club).
