Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Since I’m seeing this convo blow up on twitter now, I’m legitimately kinda of disappointed in Oda for the Watsuki interview.

While doing an interview with him doesn’t necessarily mean that Oda supports and thinks his actions were okay, I still believe giving someone like that a platform and showing support for them is wrong.
And disagree with the manga community’s “well that’s his mentor, soooooooo....” excuse.

When his beloved mentor AND the close friend you helped back into the magazine (I think) are both some variety of sex criminal it has to either register to Oda as a bad look, he’s indifferent to the issue or... well, worse options that I’m not cynical enough to consider.

it’s a bummer, regardless

I kinda want a controversy to blow up regarding this to the degree that Shueisha and Watsuki can't ignore it.
I want Watsuki to publicly acknowledge the fact that he's a shitty person and doesn't deserve any support.

It's fairly obvious that WSJ, Shueisha, Oda or any other mangaka in WSJ won't really say anything about this otherwise.

It aint week 10 fault that papa Shueisha forgot to print enough copies. Justice for week 10.
It's a conspiracy against Week 10, I tell you.

While it in unfortunate that this happened, It's not that hard to see why it did. While there are certainly many people all over the world, Japan included who have decided to stop supporting Watsuki, sales are still great, while I am sure there are people in the Japanese fanbase who will be mad at Oda, it's hard to see him thinking it'd do anything meaningful to his reputation when Watsuki committed actual crimes and got off virtually scot free.

Wasn't he busted for owning previously legal stuff that he hasn't gotten rid of yet (nude modelling of underage girls)? Wouldn't that make him less of a shitty person and Japan of the early 2000s more of a shitty country? Granted, i have no idea how widespread or normalized that stuff was.

Sales of the RK sequel would suggest otherwise.

Really? I thought it was selling pretty well, I could be wrong though.
Whoops, I misread your post and thought you were suggesting the sales were bad. Sorry about that.

Japan is backward in a lot of ways. We all are aware of this.

But Watsuki also admitted by saying "I liked girls from the upper grades of elementary school to around the second year of junior high school. "
Shitty Person.

That's one thing, but what i really meant to say and ask is how the Japanese percieve him. As a criminal or just pervy old man who should drop the dirty act? Because that's the only thing that has a real effect on the issue.

Nope. Owning child pornography was outlawed in June 2014 (producing and distributing said child pornography was of course already banned long before that), but Watsuki apparently purchased and owned the stuff he was busted for from July 2015.

The movie has doubled the US numbers in comparison of the first movie and has also surpassed the Worldwide gross from the first one (TH: 21 million | HR:25 million as now)

Extra details:
The first movie had a wide release of 535 theaters (508 in opening week), meanwhile the second one had 1,275 (1,172 in opening week)
The domestic opening of the first one was around 1.3 Million, the second one had 5.8 Million.
The movie its only on its 7/8 day as now, TH only got to 5 Million within the same time frame, so it probably will end up around 12 Million at the end of its run in US.
This is big because the other market that did around same amount on the first movie as the US, China (TH: 5.7 Millions), wont probably count with it in this movie, or atleast not at the same magnitude as it should have.

Holy shit, and movie 1 came out around what felt like a peak in the series popularity here, really goes to show that MHA is still a big deal in American even with all the Kimetsu hype.

Throwing my hat into the ring, but I agree that it is really hard to support Oda when a man of his position could easily say no. That he has daughters who're in Watsuki's "range" doesn't exactly help.

Here we go again loll, the butthurt just never ends with you people does it? Going as far as to insinuate bad things about Oda.
Maybe, just maybe... despite Watsuki's criminal record, he is someone that Oda likes and considers a good friend and mentor?
