Top 5 for Issue #16

UU: This chapter solidified UU as the next addition to the ongoing lineup in my eyes, 100% buying the first volume now. Also, hard agreeing with Aipom in saying it's hard to believe Tozuka is a newbie.

MHA: Pretty good chapter, feels like the arc is about to kick off proper in the next few chapters, very excited to see where it goes from here. It really does feel like the end of the Rise of Villains saga, which might mean the series is gonna feel a little different after this arc?

JJK: Standard JJK chapter, which is to say super good. Next week gonna be very good with CP and fight.

DS: Purely because of Boichi's art. Next week looks fun too.

TPN: Probably the only chapter since Goldy Pond ended where I've actually had a reaction that wasn't a sigh. That character's return may have been super fanservicey, but damnit I liked him too much to not give it at least 5th.

Ahahaha, good one. You think Marry Grave would last for 5 volumes in Shonen Jump with how it after 20 chapters did another 20 chapters of a flashback arc before going back to the present? You think that kind of pacing at the very beginning of the series would've survived in Jump or at Shueisha in general?

I didn’t say WSJ. Feel like he could start out in SQ or Plus before he decided on trying out Jump. Although that was a weird decision, the flashback arc was the best part of the manga imo.

Well, but that comparison doesn't really make sense. It's not like Shogakukan has a shortage of other magazines. You can't just say Shueisha has a typical audience, it depends on each magazine.

I thought most chapters this issue were either the standard and some just weak, but a few still stood out for me.
One Piece is finally out of this flashback hell and back to its classic form, my excitement went from 0 to 100.
Agravity had another repetitve chapter...and it still got the laughs out of me. And with that ending it might finally live up to its scifi comedy potential, which it has completely squandered up until now. I really hope it won't get cancelled anytime soon.
Samurai 8 finally had a chapter on the level I was expecting from Kishimoto before the serialization began, just as it's seemingly about to end. Shame he wasted so much time on the dullest crap and not more on these ideas.
And finally, its crazy how much has Undead Unluck progressed and evolved in just 9 chapters, from dirty shlock action to this crazy ambitious battle manga with limitless possibilities. I am so looking forward to see how far the author is actually willing to go with it, because he set the ceiling out of this world with this chapter.

I had guessed at it last week but it seems Undead Unluck really does plan to be about SCP hunting. I'm completely on board with that, I've always wanted an SCP manga.

Otherwise Mitama was especially random this week, some good gags but a lot was just plain weird, and the other new series were mostly fine, nothing amazing.

And yeah Samurai 8 and Zipman both feel like they're heading into their finales. Kishi could've done so much more with over 40 chapters but oh well.

What is SCP?

This week's top 5:
1. Undead Unluck - This chapter was largely an exposition dump, but it was done so right that I hope other mangaka are taking notes (looking at you author of The Last Saiyuki). It went in, had a little bit of action, showcased a couple new characters briefly, expanded their whole universe, set-up their purpose in the new organization, established their next objective, and foreshadowed a bunch more possibilities. I wasn't expecting the vast majority of these developments, but in a very good way. Excellent pacing again as usual. Super hard to believe this author is a newbie.
2. Mitama Security - Cat > Fish - enough said lol. Mitama needs to exorcise that dude's grandpa.
3. Mission: Yozakura Family - Another really good chapter in a row. The author set up the misunderstanding and was smart enough to not let it linger and resolved it nicely in the end. The very end of the chapter was actually really hilarious. Probably the only time I've enjoyed seeing the oldest brother lol. Hopefully the rest of the family gets worked into the series soon.
4. Yuragi-sou no Yuuna-san - I'm enjoying seeing all of these alternate endings, and the Kogarashi x girl scenes in each of these past few chapters have been pretty erotic, but in a romantic/passionate way.
5. We Never Learn - Not as good as the previous arc, especially since it started with this 100% filler chapter. I don't mind filler chapter ordinarily, but when this is supposed to be setting up a brand new alternate ending, I was hoping for something with more impact.

It's essentially a huge fiction site where people write about things, animals, people, etc. that break the laws of nature. It's written in a scientific way, like these things are being contained by a secret organisation and they report on how they work and how to contain them. Sometimes they're silly, sometimes creepy.

Things like killer statues that move when you aren't looking, an IKEA that's infinitely big when you step inside, a man who does everything in reverse, a ball that always moves forward and can't be stopped by anything. Judging from this chapter (and the powers so far), Undead's going to be about hunting down things like that.

I'm curious, why do you dislike her?

Personally, I'm gonna be honest: I prefer Hibari to Sagiri. I can definitely see why Hibari can get grating, but Sagiri felt like a stereotypial shit tsundere until recently, and even then it took a stereotypical shit forced marriage arc to get her out of that and realize her feelings for the MC. Doesn't change the fact that Yuuna and Chisaki or Oboro or Yaya or especially Nonko are better than both, though.

Curious to see how far Miura will go with this new Yuuna color page. Last time, I believe, you were able to see nipples, and that caused a stir (genius move, tbh).
