To keep this Wsj oriented, what's the price of WSJ tankobons right now?? 440 Yen? Or has it increased? It would be interesting if someone knows the price of Tankobon volumes over time, or even Weekly Jump issues.
All the current volumes are listed for 440 Yen + tax (i.e. a 10% consumption tax), leading to a price of 484 Yen.

Exactly. Same with Bleach. People just want to believe a sales decline has some correlation with some perceived drop in writing quality when the harsh reality is that nobody really cares about the series anymore.
That raises a valid question...what established series were actually cancelled? Because I'm honestly a tad puzzled on that front.

A case could be made for Toriko.

A case could be made for Toriko.
Toriko could just have easily been a case of Jump not wanting to run the series after all the attempts to franchise it basically feel flat on their face and it was clear Shimabukuro's plans would lead to the series lasting years, thus they made the demand he speed things up so that the manga didn't become dead-weight. The point when Shimabukuro had to start rushing the series was over a year before it ended, so it's unlikely to me that it was a straight cancellation.

@Rain Spectre established series alright canceled as in the author said it themselves.. I can only think Saint Seiya and Shaman King out of the top of my head.
Funny enough both franchises went out to become "pillars" for other competitors magazines, Shaman King for Kodansha's Shonen Magazine Edge and Saint Seiya for Akita Shoten's Shonen Champion.
Gotta remember that an "established series that's now declining in sales in Weekly Jump" is probably a huge seller for most other publishers and especially a huge hook for people that want to read the new Shaman King or Saint Seiya serial to try the new magazine of said publisher. (Which is pretty much what Kodansha is doing with Shaman King currently).

@Buranchi Without spoiling much.. Did Toriko ending feel abrupt? or did it not reach its natural conclusion??

I don't know if you could cal the various Shaman King sequels 'pillars' of any kind. Saint Seiya sequels have been a major mainstay for Champion for ages but Shaman King feels more like it's being passed around whatever magazine will take him as Takei constantly changes his idea for what he wants to do with it.

@tirakai But when the new Shaman King serial for Kodansha first debuted, arguably it was its magazine (Shonen Magazine Edge) pillar, wasn't it? (I mean pillar as in the main series, the main hook for people to buy that magazine first).

Now that I remember there was JUMP SQ failed "pillar" it was Nobuhiro Watsuki's Embalming, it was heralded as the great new title of Watsuki, the cover for the first Jump SQ magazine (Which did sold out Btw)..

But time would prove that Embalming was just a weak series.. and I mean Viz didn't even release it! It was only like 10 volumes long and Viz didn't even bother to give it a release! There's not even a full Edited Manga of it.. We are talking the newest Watsuki manga..
That just proves how irrelevant it ended up being lol (Not that I know, I haven't read it).

Yes, very abrupt.

The ending was basically Shimabu revealing a bunch of plot points he had for future arcs, that likely would have been revealed hundreds of chapters later. It was basically him saying to the fans:

"See all this neat stuff? Yeah, that's what I was going to build up to if I wasn't getting shit canned."

@Buranchi don't worry if Shimabu actually intended to continue it and if he wants to do it in the future I'm pretty sure he will get a chance to do it, it's not like it was selling super bad.. I mean pretty much every popular Jump manga either gets a sequel or a spinoff or is still running in the magazine, it's a 60% chance haha.

Edit: Obviously I'm not saying it's gonna be published in Weekly Shonen Jump, but in other Jump magazines haha or maybe in a rival magazine, who knows.

Pillar implies it's a big success, something making up the core of the magazine and the main thing that comes to mind when people think of the magazine. Shaman King wasn't that, it was zombified remains of a series that was already dead really and just showed up for a couple years then ended. It wasn't a big deal.

to this day I don't understand why they are making the last season of Shokugeki lol, I mean it's pretty mucho consensus that it sucks, and I doubt it's gonna affect manga sales by much.. So why bother.. Then again probably with streaming rights or something like that it makes sense for them, who knows.
It actually is.

That would be interesting. I'm still hoping Shimabu returns with a Build King serialization, but honestly, as much as I love his work, I'm not sure his style is suited for today's WSJ audience.

For a creator that had 2 hits in different era's of Jump; I find it that he has a good chance to survive.

Id be more interested if he returns with Chingiri. I remember Chingiri getting more of a positive reception on twitter than Build King. ONE enjoyed it and even tweeting about it,

Saint Seiya is the go to answer since it was canned and moved to Super Jump to wrap things up. Nurarihyon no mago definitely. Bobobo's sequel was swiftly cancelled. Busou Renkin.

Shaman King wasn't that, it was zombified remains of a series that was already dead really and just showed up for a couple years then ended. It wasn't a big deal.
So just looking thru Shonen Magazine Edge covers since Shaman King's debut (February 2018) it had the February, June, July, September, October, and December covers for 2018.. That's 6 months out of 11 it had been serialized in, pretty much monopolizing half a year of covers.

In 2019 it had covers for July and September, but the manga was in hiatus for a long time, apparently 5 months so two covers out of 7 it was serialized in..

Also another Shaman King series is published in that same magazine, it looks like a Spin off or something.

So yeah, it seems to me that Kodansha had every intention to make Shaman King Shonen Edge's pillar (Basically the Magazine "Shaman King runs in"), I really don't know much about this magazine, but if the Shaman King franchise isn't its pillar please tell me which serial is.

Also, I wonder.. If this series is so dead why did it just get a full reprint by Kodansha? Two serializations in Shonen Edge plus an anime adaptation offer which the author refused? Shaman King reeks the smell of a death series.. Yeah, right..

Guys, this current Shaman King argument is starting to get a little too off-topic-ey.

Let's change the subject, please.

Just talking quickly with added informations, yes, Shaman King is the pilar/flagship of Shonen Magazine Edge, it's basically the only thing sells good there and in fact it was also the flagship of the canceled Jump Kai magazine where Shaman King got TONS of covers and lead color pages not only for the Shaman King Flowers sequel but the spinoffs published before, this is what sucks about Takei situation, Flowers was really selling well and being the king of Jump Kai but Shueisha decided to cancel the magazine, it was probably when Takei said "f@ck you" to Shueisha and moved to Kodansha.

Ok, I'm gonna change the topic.
During the 80s there were a couple of series that were "reset" in Jump, e.g. Sannen Kimengumi/Highschool Kimengumi and Hareluya/Hareluya II Boy.

Even manga like Dai No Daiboken, of One Piece got different one shots before finally being serialized.. so in a sense that's also similar to a "reset"

Maybe the first serial was popular and the author wanted to reset or do a new serial with some ideas or something..

My question is, do you have any series that you think could work with a "reset"? Maybe even cancelled series.

Rephrasing my question, I guess it would be: Do you think any series be it canceled or not could have fared better if given a second chance by Jump perhaps once the author realized his/her story's weaknesses/strenghts?

I always thought that Double Arts shouldn't have been cancelled to begin with haha, but a reset could have done wonders for it..

Maybe a reimagination of Video Girl Ai with adult websites or stuff like that would be cool too.

Golem Hearts. It should've stuck with the one shot premise of Noah arriving on the island randomly, One Piece style. Or, just condense his backstory with his dad into just 1 chapter.

Another is Robot X Laserbeam. It really never should have timeskipped years ahead into the pro arc.
I don't know what Fujimaki or his editor were thinking with that move. He should have just done a normal highschool sports club manga, allowing him to build up the cast for us to get attached to. Going straight into the pro arc when the only character we actually know is the MC was a horrible idea, especially when Fujimaki tried to show off some of the other club alumni as if we were actually given time to care about them.
