Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

This question is specifically for those of you that reside in the US currently.

Will you be spending your $1200/$2400 on something WSJ related, or no? Assuming you qualify, that is.
I think I might buy the Dr. Stone volumes to add to my collection but I’m not going to waste the money because I need it lol

The final volume of Assassination Classroom only has 3 numbered chapters with the extra chapters and some one-shots filling the rest. Why do we keep assuming the final volume has to end at a certain point?
It's just 1 one shot (published before), and the 4 extra chapters were all published in WSJ and complete the story, so in the end the volume is filled with 7 chapters, since Gotouge already published a entire book about one shots, there's really no thing to fill the space that a volume is supposed to be so he/she would have to publish something (unless the Tomioka Gaiden really fills the gap if wasn't included in something else)

Honest question, why do many people find MHA 'exhausting' and are 'done' with it? Especially since the past 20 chapters or so are really well done.
Without going into plot-related stuff.
A few good arcs here and there don't make me interested in a manga, I would rather have some consistency, and I find MHA to be a rollercoaster most of the time

There are several hype moments, but they're surrounded by what feels like obvious story stretching. One piece fills space up with islands and naruto adds more villains. The difference for me is that naruto and one piece integrate those arcs into the story. The islands are part of the lore, villains are related to each other.
In mha, you could completely kick out the overhaul arc, and nothing would change. I liked stain, but he is pretty much irrelevant at this point.
After all might vs afo, the only arcs that move the plot forward are pro hero arc, mva, and the current arc. It stretches by bringing the plot to a complete stop. I don't feel any sense of forward momentum.
I also fon't feel anything for the characters, the heroes are always prepared and the villains aren't threatening, depictions of abuse and character situations so far have been overly comical, they don't have a human edge to them, character development isn't believable, and I don't find it entertaining either. Only character, that I think has been made justice is endeavor.

My gripes with the series are pretty much
1. Little to no actual plot movement
2. No stakes
3. Awkward character development

Personally, I find the academy students have never been fleshed out well in MHA as Horikoshi always narrows focus on the same small selection of students and disregards everyone else for long periods of time that you eventually just lose interest in the rest of the school. Which also leads to losing interest in the series itself if the same core characters remain stale and boring. Doesn’t help with there being too many new characters that keep expanding the cast and it still only focuses on the same group of characters.

That’s why I find series like Iruma-kun to handle school settings while retaining the “battle shonen” aspect much better since it always shares focus between the entire classroom and teachers. There’s a greater sense where the entire cast matters instead of just focusing on the MC and select few while disregarding the rest of the characters. It keeps the series fresh and keeps me anticipating for when future events happen to affect not only the MC, but the entire cast.

While I was going to stay out of the MHA discussion due to not really having much interest in what other people think of the series at this point, I will say that the Iruma comparison is a very flawed point to make.

Iruma is an SOL manga first and formost, and its storytelling is built around that. The semi-episodic format of the narrative means that Nishi is able to build of whatever he feels like without making it feel like the readers time is being wasted, characters are able to interact with whatever scenario is presented off of the authors whim.

MHA meanwhile is a battle manga that uses its school-life as breathers from the much more intense and violent main story, and arcs have weighted consequence as a result. That kind of story has different priorities, and Horikoshi is clearly more interested in intersecting his characters with the themes and narrative than following them on random adventures.

Both approaches are entirely valid and one is allowed to agree and disagree with either of them, but I feel it's very flawed to argue for a comparison when the two works are doing very different things.

All good points here about MHA's criticisms. As for me, I still adore the series very much and read it weekly. For all of its flaws that I see, at least it hasn't fallen so far off the deep end......yet. That, at least, is why I'm still sticking to it.

It's true that the academia parts are pretty tedious to get through, but as far as handling its ensemble cast, I think it does a better job of handling that than the Big 3 did back in their heyday. It's not perfect, but I think it's satisfactory, imo.

I'm of two minds about plot progression in MHA. It's true that past series were better at moving the plot along, such as Naruto. But that came at the expense of the rest of the cast. Meanwhile, MHA still remain at maintaining its ensemble-focused appeal. This of course, has its drawbacks, which stalls the plot at certain points, and as such some arcs feels inconsequential as a whole. So....you can't really have your cake and eat it too.

The current manga arc has a high possibility of bringing back a beloved character in the fanbase, which connects this one to a previous arc, if you could call it that.

Okay, I was also gonna sit this one out but then Iruma came into the equation and I feel obligated to respond.
You make a very fair point about Iruma and MHA being two manga with different priorities, and I think both ways have their respective strengths.

However, I will say this: I don’t think the Iruma-kun comparison is all that flawed. The two definitely have a fair few similarities (People don’t call Iruma “Blue Deku” for no reason). As such, I think Iruma’s better at handling its cast not only because it’s format allows for it to explore its characters more through, but simply because it’s more focused.

Put it this way - Iruma, his best friends, the entire class he’s in, the teacher of that class, the school’s student council president, his foster family, and the series’s first real antagonist make for less characters than just Class 1-A of HeroAca. I really like a lot of HeroAca’s characters, but Hori kind of shot himself in the foot in that department. Cause, as many people have stated, it can get kind of hard to care about them once you realize how many there are. And the fact that MHA is a battle shonen first doesn’t help matters, since it’s more plot focused, and as such, there’s less time to give to minor characters. Whenever Hori does manage to give characters enough screen time to develop, I think they become instant fan-favorites. But screen time is hard to come across.

Again, I should note that I love HeroAca a lot. I’m going to read it to the end, and Horikoshi himself is a sort of inspiration for me. Same with Iruma, as well. But both do have their flaws, and though it saddens me to see people fall off it, I can kind of understand why that is.

This is all I’ll say on the matter for now, since I have some work to do.

Everyone, the current MHA discussion is better suited for the MHA section of this site.

I ask that further posts on the subject be posted there. Thank you.
Awww, just when I was about to post my 3899 word long essay about MHA weak and strong points~ (just kidding :P)

:3c (just joking, but it was pretty obvious)

PS: And still no info about Jujutsu Kaisen anime :emobirb

I'm starting to get worried. We continue having a lot of stuff for Fall (and even 2021) getting PVs, release date, staff, studios...

Only thing we got for JJK was a PV with just text two months ago, and we still don't have the release date or even the MAPPA studio confirmation

So, this is one of the 4 things that were going to be announced "soon" according to spytrue, bummer that he chose to reveal the most obvious one.

I wonder if JJK's anime is going to be delayed to 2021 after all.

But what is this obsession?

Is it possible that it must always be repeated cyclically?

They will be there when they are, period.

Both the info on the seiyuu and the probable date of airing have come out, any info will obviously come out in the coming months.
