Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

That's brilliant. We need a wacky/over the top comedy series like bobobo. I want to see parodies of the new titles like CSM/AA/JJK/KnY/TPN/etc,
That's what gag 4-koma are for.

Frankly, considered how poorly Mitama sold, I feel little if any confidence in gag as a genre.

I would love a battle gag series like bobobo

While I was going to stay out of the MHA discussion due to not really having much interest in what other people think of the series at this point, I will say that the Iruma comparison is a very flawed point to make.

Iruma is an SOL manga first and formost, and its storytelling is built around that. The semi-episodic format of the narrative means that Nishi is able to build of whatever he feels like without making it feel like the readers time is being wasted, characters are able to interact with whatever scenario is presented off of the authors whim.

MHA meanwhile is a battle manga that uses its school-life as breathers from the much more intense and violent main story, and arcs have weighted consequence as a result. That kind of story has different priorities, and Horikoshi is clearly more interested in intersecting his characters with the themes and narrative than following them on random adventures.

Both approaches are entirely valid and one is allowed to agree and disagree with either of them, but I feel it's very flawed to argue for a comparison when the two works are doing very different things.
I wasn’t attempting to start an argument mate. I said “personally” which means it’s my opinion on why I lost interest in one series while I still enjoy the other series. But I’m not gonna dabble any further because it’s off-topic and Buranchi politely asked to keep it in the other thread.:super

You say that as if Mashle isn't having great positions so far, better than Mitama, the sales aren't even that terrible too

"Not that terrible"

Are we so low in expectations that less than 5K for a Jump series is "not that bad"?

4k seller in Vol 2 without any growth is bad, despite how much I like Mitama.

For a gag manga doesn't look "that terrible", it also doesn't mean it can't grow, the overall opinion and reviews around the series are more positive than negative, and it doesn't seem like is being rushed at all, we also doesn't know what Shonen Jump expected from Mitama, we're just basically judging it from the typical "standards" we use to everything but the magazine and the series are still not sending "cancelled" signs so far.

I mean, Mitama is an episodic manga with barely an overarching plot. If anything, when it finishes we might not even see the signs beforehand. Also, the series has been faring worse in the TOC, not to mention the bad sales and I have many doubts it can grow with volume 3. You can play the gag manga card, but 4,000 with the second volume is still bad news. If it ends up getting canned in the near future, I won't be surprised.

Mashle still getting promoted at least with the colour page this issue, although this week could be the last bit of promotion if Mashle ends up being more successful and takes its spot as the new gag manga.

I'd like for Mitama to grow and stick around but my hopes are low at this point. Might go longer than Samurai 8 but I doubt it'll make it past ch 50 unless there's sudden huge improvement.

Mashle doesn't have a CP, though?

Also, while this is kinda nitpicking, Mashle is just a comedy manga, not a gag like Mitama. You can tell that by the page count (gag manga have pagecount of 16 pages, not 17-19).

I am happy this is a prank, because otherwise I'd be very unhappy to see Amano again.

Mashle isn't getting a Color Page. The ones with CP this week are Jujutsu, MHA and a oneshot.

You could say the same thing about David-kun and we noticed it was ending weeks before because the series had a shift in the mood with the romance thing escalating, Mitama has actually even more potential for serious plot because the whole organization and the main point of the series being Joh having to exorcize Rena's spirits, the manga already had some serious stuff going on when the "Body" appeared, so i really doubt that the manga will just suddenly end without no one noticing, it will have some drama about Joh having to go against Rena or the organization hunting her.

About the rankings, yes, it conveniently started to drop in the last weeks but isn't like the manga wasn't appearing in the bottom even before the first volume was released, and it still not dead in the bottom 2. I will also not be surprised if it's happen in the future but my point is that so far we don't have signs of ending soon.

Jimoto ga Japan had 17 pages per chapter...

And Mashle is a gag manga lol

I had meant to say Mitama got a colour page this issue, not Mashle.

Mashle might be longer chapters but when there's no pure comedy manga of any type, I doubt it really matters to WSJ whether the successful one is pure gag or gag-action or plain comedy. If they can get any at all to succeed that's good enough.

If we're going by that logic, then Bo-Bobo wasn't a gag manga either. It was over the top parody like Mashle, not episodic.

I don't think gag/comedy is a very productive distinction to make. There's some merit in the argument, but it's rarely clear-cut and I don't feel the current Jump comedies are that different from each other for it to matter.

Btw, regarding pagecounts, Mitama has 17, not 16, and Agravity has 19, and until I stopped reading I didn't see anything that warrants a different classification than Mitama.

I think while there may be a slight difference between a "gag" manga and a "comedy" manga, I don't think it's about the amount of pages it gets lol. Either way the difference seems to minor that I doubt Jump would have different standards with them. I would imagine Nak wouldn't say "man these Mitama sales are awful for a comedy! Time to axe!" and change his mind if someone said "wait no it's a gag manga!" Bad sales are still gonna be bad sales, as much as I like the series.

Rain, what purpose does this post serve, other than trying to purposely start drama with Amano fans?

If Amano theoretically did return, just don't read the series. There's no reason to hate any mangaka's return.

Unless it was Watsuki. >_>
