Uhhh, that's debatable. Usually if a new series sells well enough, WSJ would just push it up the rankings and have it wobble up and down the ranking a lot. If something stays near the bottom, it might only be surviving because other newer series are doing worse overall.

Well it's kinda hard to tell when using Jojo because sales numbers from that era aren't documented. But I believe it sold well enough for it to survive in spite of the not so hot rankings....maybe like Yuuna.

It's safe to say that ToC positions don't really matter once the ball gets rolling, I mean just look at Jojo. If Agravity manages to get a somewhat decent ranking for the next 5 weeks and decent volume sales, maybe it'll survive.

Even for Jojo it's constant low placement contributed to the decision to move to a different magazine. No, the ToC still matters, it just matters less. It matters in part because an established series falling to the bottom of the ToC is a warning sign that people are losing interest and a decline in sales is likely follow. The most recent example being Shokugeki no Souma. It fell to the bottom of the ToC and stayed there, then it's sales went into a significant decline. With the result that eventually Jump clearly told the authors to wrap it up given the way the final arc was proceeding leisurely, then suddenly when into overdrive to rush to the end just as it was reaching what should have been the meat of the arc.

So the ToC is relevant for established series, they just get more leeway. From what I've see, a new series is vulnerable to being quickly axed, with only a handful of chapters in which to wrap up. A series that's been around for more than a year might get a final concluding chapter in one of Jump's seasonal magazines. Series that have been around for more than two years seem to get extra time in which to wrap up, and might get extra chapters in other magazines as well. Series with a high level of sales can sit in the bottom for quite some time, protected by their sales. Even if they reach enough of a decline to warrant ending the series they're likely to have extra time in which to do it.

Considering most of those series sold like utter shit, I feel like they're fine unless they rapidly decline. People really are just looking for ammo to say they'll be cancelled. This is Samurai 8 all over again. Don't get why people can't just keep their mouths shut and wait instead of pretending they have any clue what Shueisha is thinking.

I will say that one factor that the current new series have in their favor is the availability of space in the TOC. For the past handful of years, the vast majority of the TOC spots were secured by basically insurmountable veteran series. There are at least 4 more veteran series that'll end within the year (We Never Learn, Yuuna probably, Kimetsu, Neverland) and possibly 5 depending on how quickly Haikyuu decides to wrap things up. There are currently 5 new series that haven't cemented themselves in the lineup yet with 3 more on deck to start in the coming weeks, and only 1 of those 3 new series would need something axed to make room for it. If there's ever been a time to break the curse some more, I'd say it's now.

Yozakura feels like it'll get axed eventually to me, like it's in that Soul Catchers/Stars/Magico kind of spot where it's not really a hit, it's just doing better than most of the new stuff. It's also definitely benefiting from the magazine currently having 8 spots open for new series (hence giving it a lot of potential padding at the bottom).

But you never know, maybe it'll get really lucky and last long enough above new series padding that it becomes more established.

Mitama is harder to say though since it's pure gag series. They might still keep around to fill their gag manga slot unless it craters in the toc (though if Mashle ends up being a proper hit, perhaps they'll abandon Mitama for that). I get the impression they don't care about sales much at all for gag series, going by previous series that stuck around.

At any rate I feel like they probably both would've been cancelled by now if wsj wasn't low on established series. They started at a good time.

pretty much the best time ever to start a new series in jump with even some total failures getting close to 30 chapters, yet he joins the U19 club for the second time in a row.

The vast majority of these series started already dead in the toc, never got a reprint or color page after ch2 and even the ones that got a color page, majority were from popular/known authors, ofc Yozakura and specially Agravity aren't 100% safe but they already have advantages over most of them
