That looks so unnecessarily rude of them.
I think you underestimate quite how disliked S8 ended up by Japan.

You'd think a space adventure series would be inspired by something space-related.

But I guess it turns out, in the end, genuinely the only reason they were in space really was just to make the characters stronger than in Naruto. He could have set it actually on the scale of an amoeba and it would've made zero difference to the plot, since it never used the huge scale for anything that mattered beyond showing how strong the villains were.
That's kinda the most damning thing about Kishimoto's work for S8. For all the talk about his inspirations, he did nothing but make surface level transplanting without care. He drew from Star Wars liberally while forgetting that the original trilogy is so acclaimed because of its simplicity. He cited Seven Samurai, a work with a very cynical view of samurai, as a source of influence yet portrays samurai as gallant heroes. And now he admits that the main inspiration was a single two minute scene from AKIRA divorced from narrative and thematic context that's connection amounts to "cool existentialism". Literally everything is just him trying to replicate what he felt was cool in movies without any deeper thought.

Honestly, it's really hard for me to feel any sympathy for Kishimoto as this point. So much of S8's failure can be chalked up to him having zero forethought, even thinking readers would stick through the "boring parts" because of his name (and infamously comparing it to chewing squid). If there's anything S8 will be remembered as in comparison to the pictures, it's Heaven's Gate, and not in a good way.

....This is flabbergasting on so many levels.
But not surpising. Kishimoto pretty much wrote an entire autobiography in the extra pages of the Naruto volumes and he brought up Akira, both the manga and the film, so many times, always gushing about them, and even saying it was what made him want to become a mangaka (along with Dragon Ball). Although if I remember correctly he acknowledged that it only influenced his art in the end. I guess not anymore.

I thought I read that Kimetsu would have two chapters this week, or a double length or something. It's only one chapter?

It’s just a manga lol. Even if someone doesn’t like the manga or hates it, at the end of the day it’s just a manga series.
I’m sure Kishimoto isn’t begging for sympathy from anyone, nor doesn’t it seem like he is.

He simply just wrote a manga that didn’t catch on, and sure, had a lot of issues.
But even if you think the manga is just plain bad, there are very few mangaka, musician. Movie directors, authors, etc. who went their entire careers without dropping a few duds. No need to hold a grudge against Kishimoto and act likes a bad person or hack because he release a bad series

Did anyone post this?

And also from an animator that's working on the DQ anime.

So we're pretty much getting (or have gotten) anime news regarding JJK/WT/DQ this month, nice.

Was looking around out of curiousity and I found this chart of Jump assistants

Does anyone know where we get this sort of info from? Has there been official Japanese assistants charts, or is it just based on various things different mangaka have said?

it's from 2018 too, so I'd be curious to see a new one with more recent creators included.

Thank you these people act like he didn’t make one of the most influential series of all time. Look you don’t have to like Samaria 8 or Naruto (I personally am not a fan of it) but at least have some respect considering 80% of the series in jump right now are clearly influenced by kishimoto’s manga (naruto) in some way.

I fully respect Naruto as a work.

I'm simply expressing my lack of respect for Kishimoto for what S8 turned into.

So you just gonna turn on the guy for 1 bad manga. This dude did not have to make it in the first place considering he worked week by week with barely any free time for 15 years. Everyone makes mistakes and that is what makes us human. Some of the best athletes, musicians, bookwriters, producers, and artist have made terribly stupid mistakes in there career in terms of there art because there human. You gotta respect the dude because not only without him we would not have a lot of legendary shonen manga this past decade but anime would not be as popular as it is today in the west without it because it is one of the biggest gateway anime of all time. Again I’m not a fan of naruto and I am definitely not a fan of samurai 8 but you still gotta respect this dude and that goes for any successful manga artist veteran and young.

Just Kishi? Not his editor, or all the suits who undoubtedly yes man'd all of his decisions?
Oh, they're complicit as well, but everything which contributed to S8's failure is ultimately Kishimoto's doing. Editorial isn't the one who said it be like "chewing on squid".

And why couldn't they have stopped him from writing that way? Isn't that the job of editors, to guide authors and make sure they're not going astray?

But why does writing a bad series warrant “losing respect” for him? There was nothing particularly offensive or in poor taste about it (racism, sexism, etc.)
He hasn’t shown any public anger or disrespect to it’s critics or haters.

Sure he hyped up the series, but even if you hate the series, obviously the creator themself would love the series, and expect others to like it too. He’s not going to go around saying “eh, it’s only Ight”

And if you’re a Kishimoto fan, I don’t get how this would be a turning point.
He wrote 1 bad series out of his 2 total series. I could see if after Naruto he wrote like 6 flops. (And honestly S8 isn’t even THAT bad. It’s just your usual mid Jump series at worst. It just got more attention and talk than the usual axed series because it’s Kishimoto. It’s no Demon’s Plan or Sporting Salt)

I saw a list of Jump "クソ漫画" on some Japanese site and sure enough, our Squid was there.

I get it he is mostly to blame but why you always hating on older mangakas. No this is not me being like “ONe PiEce BeTTEr ThAn DEmOn SLaYer” type of people because I hate it when people blindly hate on new manga to. I get it new gen haters and salty one piece fans are annoying but that still don’t change the fact that the big 3 and dragon ball made anime popular in the west, caused shonen jump to go back to being the best selling yearly manga, and that all the newer artist look up to them and are clearly inspired by them. Again not saying you have to like the art but at least respect the authors for there contribution to the industry.

Don't WSJ usually pair inexperienced editors with experienced creators? And vice versa.

You can't blame his editor too much if that was the case, any newbie editor will probably hold a lot of respect for Kishi as a 15+ year senior. They'd probably trust Kishi knows what he's doing since he'd have a lot more experience in the industry and should have a better grasp on what people like, even if they personally don't think it works.

Kishi should've known better than to start Samurai 8 like he did, but a new editor paired with him to get experience might not.

Just for reference, the only thing Taguchi (the editor) was involved in prior to S8 was Hell Warden Higuma.
