HEllo,

I'm re-reading the manga from Chapter 1 (long quarantine...), and I noticed that Nami NEVER shows any kind of attraction towards male characters, BUT has shown to be generally very friendly towards other girls.

Besides, she openly called Khalifa "sexy" during their battle, and has exchanged quite some intense stares with Tashigi back at Punk Hazard.

Not that it matters, I mean One Piece is not about relationships and all, but do you think Oda could have written Nami as a gay character?

If One Piece had a shoujo Ai note to it then you bet I'd cheer for Nami x Robin, or similar.

Well we do have many non linear characters such as Kiku, Ivankov or Bon Clay, so...

20 years of writing the story and showing subtle references would be a great way to show them. Nami as gay would be amazing as long as that itself doesn't become an arc.....

Given how the series usually is it doesn't seem like this being the case would be in the least bit relevant. I can think of no way, form or context in which the story would be in any conceivable form affected by this. It wouldn't chance or affect the meaning of anything nami has ever done and it wouldn't affect her relationship with other characters (except maybe sanji and only for a few frames for he is relentless in his.... chivalry). That said, I do sincerely doubt this is the case. There are two reasons for this:

1.- The first is that while oda doesn't particularly portray gays negatively.... he does portray them as... lets say eccentric for lack of a better word. This isn't something that fits into how oda portrays nami in any way. In the story oda has shown both an all female island and an all man island. The female island sustain its population by going out and about and getting pregnant. The all man island apparently sustains its population by drawing in all the gag charact- I mean gay dudes.

2.- How nami interacts with other females is not substantially different from how other females interact with other females. In OP you have virtually no women lusting after men. The only instance I recall is good old pudding.... But otherwise the same points that could be use to make the case nami is gay apply to virtually every other woman in the series.

Overall, it doesn't look like gay women even register in oda's orbit or his story. I suppose we can't rule out okama's under ivankov originally being actual females though I doubt this is quite the same.

I don't think so. Nami calling Kalifa sexy doesn't has to mean anything.

Most of the time, One Piece is devoid of romance. Except for Sanji or Brook, the Strawhats have shown little interest if any at all.

And I wouldn't take it too seriously, it's one of the few things the series has been not consistent. During the Arabasta arc, all of the Strawhats are peeking at Nami and Vivi. However, later on Luffy, Zoro, Usopp and Chopper have no interest into women (or Human females in Chopper case).

I would say these characters are drag queens, not necessarily gay.

And too many characters in One Piece are weird to make that analogy. Senor Pink was married and is a ladies man, yet...

Girls call each other sexy or pretty all the time bruh. Doesn't make them lesbian. It's just a girl thing.

I absolutely agree. It's just a little gossipy topic. Long Quarantine, you know.

I beg to differ

I think Oda MIGHT have subtly written the character to be gay. It's a big IF, but I don't think we can rule it out.

Also check this video out, it explains the same things more or less

Personally, I've seen the theory tossed around so many times, it's ingrained in my mind as fact. Or headcanon as the kids like to say nowadays.

The coding could be read into if you'd like and I certainly don't fault those who do.

Yeah, it's like with Luffy.

To me, he's an asexual. This doesn't mean he'll never a female or male companion, but asexual nonetheless.

Hints are there. You may or may not read into them, it's up to you. It would not affect the story btw, since OP is much less into relationships than Naruto, to name one.
It's kinda like Dragonball in that regard.

The only one there that to me looks gay is the one with kaliffa... And lets be honest, that bit was mostly a gag... The other ones seems pretty well within how oda handles all females. As in, nothing out of the ordinary whatsoever. Besides, if the non kaliffa stuff was sexual for nami... wouldn't it make more sense for her to evidence it on at least some level? Either by being uncomfortable or by responding in kind? In turn she is rather consistently comfortable with what otherwise is stuff she is actively sexually enjoying...

No Nami is not a lesbian.

Nami is a feminist because she was raised by a strong women. Thats more or less even mentioned in the text when she passes the Punk Hazard children over to Tashigi.

Also if one realizes that Luffy has the symbolism of a Storm God, and then realizes that Nami has that same symbolism as Luffy, then one has to realize that Nami can only be based on Inanna, Goddes of Love and War, Patron of Whores and Queen of Heaven. She even can drink all males under the table ;)

stop bringing characters from outside one piece man.... .. always making me feel old and irrelevant with these pop culture references i dont know....

But seriously though, who cares... Okiku being a man, what did that change? One Piece was never about sexuality of the people... even sanji tried our okama for a bit, the only character who's really thinking sexually about women.

I dont care if Nami is shown as a lesbian.... As long as it doesn't dilute her character... being a thief, using her charm to her advantage and manipulate men is something she's always done and these don't have to change if she's gay. Same with Luffy, someday he may get a romantic angle but as long as its after he becomes pirate king, we are good...

Oh no, we all agree that it would not matter at all.

I was just wondering if by any chance she COULD've been written as a gay character by Oda, albeit very sublty
