I had always figured DNA2 was just naturally short, due to the anime and OVAs and I remember having a bunch of flash games ripping it off too.

Though even if it was cancelled, I think you can still say it became a successful series in the end because of all that.

For MHA, Endeavor's redemption arc has been pretty different from a typical series. It was interesting to see a mangaka actually deal with that topic in such a mainstream series and in mostly a very mature manner.
Then there was the obvious thing of Bakugou's character growth in two chapters (vs Deku) being far greater than the entire character arc of Sasuke over the entirety of Naruto.

Horikoshi, for the most part, knows how to make compelling characters and show visible growth based on events in the story.
Even Tomura's character arc has changed him in a lot of ways to a much more interesting villain. But I'll wait and see how Horikoshi deals with his character going forward to judge it completely.

I will read JK and CSM and then give my thoughts on those. From the initial chapters of both that I read, I still did think JK was unique in its own manner. But I'll need to read more to say why.

No matter how it ends, good or bad, I will always remember Horikoshi for being even willing to try to tackle this topic. It might not even end as neatly as people hope. Or even downright disappoint large swaths of the fandom. But I'm appreciating the journey so far and will always be in the future. Because sometimes, appreciating the journey is better than judging a story by solely on where the journey ends.

Mashle cover looks solid. The book cover look works super well. Mashle is a HP parody and it wears that on it's sleeves very proudly.
Also, how Mash is on the cover. The spin being him breaking the wand instead of wielding it.

That JJK v chainsaw man debate was a interesting read.

Both are are unique from the standard battle manga in similar and different ways. But JJK has is deffo being underated because it isn’t as out there as chainsaw.

Wait, Miura actually used those three as a volume cover for Yuuna?! If that’s who I think they are, then that’s hilarious.
I assume that you have not read chapter 192 yet.

Oh, I have, and I’m laughing.

This, especially since most shonen anime tend to shit the bed to varying degrees.

JJK is an interesting case.
I recognize the author have some amazing ideas, specially with the power system, and he wants to tell a story that is definitely heavily inspired on togashi (nen and jujutsu bear some resemblances in which both are very hard magic systems) and kubo rather than on kishimoto and oda. And that really interests me, but after reading 50 or so chapters (which were shoddily translated I might add, which corroborates to the explanation of why JJK is not popular overseas) I decided to wait for the anime to give the manga a go, taking advantage of the momentum it builds, I will definitely give it my thoughts when I get going with the read.

Now, im definitely a chainsaw fan but I recognize the flaws of the Fujimoto-style writing and pacing, specially when it comes to details, where he seems to err more frequently than in other aspects, however I do believe that Fujimoto have a very good grasp in character writing and despite what some usually say when the story goes "wild", everything is build up for the moment it goes "wild", I think that chainsawman have a faux simplicity that makes people not pay attention enough to some of the plot elements which leads to people being confused when said plot elements pays off. Another credit to Fujimoto is that he can write a story that is unpredictable yet never reaches the infamous "asspull" territory.

All in all, I think that both series are something special, like the "vanguard" of shounen manga, Act-Age is a manga im fond of too for having the boldness of tackling a non-conventional theme.
I love this trio and want them to really succeed in what they are attempting to deliver

What's a standard battle shonen manga anyway?

Either series that don’t really bring anything new to the table and/or series that are to derived from the manga before them and use a lot of the tropes from those manga (example is black clover). While this is my opinion it seems that what people see as standard is different from each other. Many people call demon slayer and My hero standard even though to me that’s not the case (at least during the endeavor arc and the villain arc and so on). I think people throw it around way to much in my opinion because if you look at a lot of the manga in shonen jump they all have something to seperate it from the rest. The only manga I would really call “standard” is black clover and even then I actually enjoy the series a lot.

Standard battle shounen to me is stuff like

- hot blooded main character with a secret super evil side, and his power lets him punch people a lot or really hard
- colder, calmer, but maybe angrier rival who acknowledges MC but doesn't admit it
- mostly simple morality where protagonists are all good, antagonists are all evil (though with a couple notable grey character to spice things up, and a villain or two becoming good later)
- new villain group to fight each arc with just enough members for the main cast to all join in
- MC admires his strong father-figure-like mentor from a previous generation (who probably dies at some point)

Obviously most series don't follow all of that stuff but they're the things I feel like I see most among both the hits and flops.

People throw around the term like an insult which I find stupid, the most important thing about a story is the execution, after all you can have the most original premise but a bad execution, originality isn't always important, the execution of the premise is the most important thing about the story.
